Your character is basically the spawn point for your entire army

In Kinghold, you control the king directly, but your army fights for itself.

The twist is that cards for troops, towers and other defences are deployed around your king, so a run isn't just about choosing the right cards and upgrades, you're also constantly deciding where you are needed most

The free demo just went live on Steam

If anyone here gives it a try, I'd love to hear what kind of build you ended up going for or if you managed to find any ways to break the demo.

What if you actually had to run across the map to place towers?

In Kinghold, your king is effectively your army's spawn point.

Towers, traps and troops can only be deployed around your current position, so if one side of the map starts falling apart, you have to physically run over there to reinforce it.

The free demo just went live on Steam today and I'd genuinely love to hear what tower defense players think of the twist!

People said the sheep in my game die too easily, so I added a perk that turns them into battle sheep

People said the sheep in my game die too easily, so I added a perk that turns them into battle sheep. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth breaking the fantasy theme so I can add another one that gives them all uzis...

18 months of building a game in Godot

I completely changed the gameplay about a week after that first clip and, 18 months later, Kinghold is now weeks away from a demo on Steam.

I do still like the original idea, but the gameplay after shifting turned out to be much more engaging and playtest feedback has been positive enough that I want to follow through to full release, so hopefully there'll be another Godot game on Steam soon :)

Multiple playtesters asked for the descriptions to be built into the cards, but I'm worried the tiny writing looks terrible?

Normally, hovering over the cards while holding RMB brought up a full-sized tooltip with the card stats, but several play testers wanted to be able to quickly compare the stats of different cards at a glance.

They said "there's loads of wasted space on the cards", but if you count that space in scaled pixels then there's really not much at all.

This design was the 'best' I could come up with, but I'm worried the tiny writing looks messy and isn't at all in keeping with a minimalist design. This isn't a post to chase after wishlists, but more of the artwork visible here for comparison.

Is responding to the feedback more important than my OCD and and I should leave this as the default, or can I hide 'embedded card details' away as an optional setting for people to turn on if they want? There is a slight possibility I am overreacting, so would appreciate some outside thoughts

No wishlists for five days, or just not updated?

My wishlist count hasn't gone up for the past 5 days, and the line on the graph is stuck on the 20th. Is that just because no one has wishlisted, or some sort of technical problem?

Kinghold - A survivors-like and tower-defence mashup

Game Title: Kinghold

Playable Link: https://barkitectgames.itch.io/kinghold

Platform: Itch .exe file (web builds suffer performance issues I'm afraid)

Description:

Kinghold is a blend of tower defence and survivor-like with light deck building and strategy elements.

Position buildings and summon troops to fend off increasingly difficult and adaptive waves of enemies. Kill enemies to earn points and be rewarded with new cards to add to your hand. Find and open chests to collect perks and bonuses, but be careful not to leave your castle unguarded for too long.

Survive fifty intervals and defeat the final boss to claim victory.

Use WASD to move, SPACE to attack (or stop moving near a target), Q or E to use the king’s ability (for the cost of 1 gold), ESC to pause, and hold RMB while however over units, cards, or perks for their stats and description.

Free to Play Status:

  • [X] Free to play
  • [ ] Demo/Key available
  • [ ] Paid (Allowed only on Tuesdays with [TT] in the title)

Involvement:

Solo developed over what will soon be two years. I've implement an initial round of feedback with balance changes, systems changes, and several QoL features. Hoping to nail down the gameplay so I can move on to making as much content as possible ready for a Steam release.

Thanks for taking a look and sharing your thoughts. Game can be wishlisted here if it's one that interests you https://store.steampowered.com/app/4829360/Kinghold.

All assets were drawn in Aseprite, with Godot 4 used as the game engine. Sound effects were sourced on Itch.

Kinghold - keen for initial feedback

I've been working on this as a hobby project for the past 18 months and now feel like it's at a good point to start asking for feedback on the gameplay.

Any feedback prior to a full playtest build would be really appreciated :)
