CMV: Timing/guessing when the gun goes off should be allowed in track sports

“In track and field sprints, the sport's governing body, World Athletics, has a rule that if the athlete moves within 0.1 seconds after the gun has fired the athlete has false-started.[4]”

IAAF-commissioned study indicated in 2009 that top sprinters are able to sometimes react in 0.08 seconds.

I think this is silly. A top sprinter being disqualified or penalised for reacting too fast is ridiculous. There is a varied and somewhat random amount of time that the gun can go off after “set” so the risk reward of going before the gun is punished enough if you get it wrong.

My bigger point is that is a world where .02 is the difference between winning and losing, penalising sprinters for doing their job seems goofy AF.

Post edit: we have the technology to time everyone based on when they started moving. If you want to remove reaction time or guessing from the sport, just use individual times and not bother lining them up.

I like it better with the risk reward of timing the gun.

CMV: Demetrious Johnson is the best MMA fighter so far, proportionally.

This one is reeeeeaaallly subjective, but I am open to discussion.

It is my view that DJ is the best MMA fighter so far, proportional to his size.

He was the inaugural and former UFC Flyweight Champion (125 lbs) with a record of 11 consecutive title defenses.

Johnson most recently competed in ONE Championship, where he is the former ONE Flyweight Champion (135 lb), and was the 2019 ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion

He is now retired from fighting but still makes lots of YouTube content and is quite a fun person to follow.

With regards to fighting, he was well regarded as the most technical and fastest fighter of his divisions.

For all of these reasons, DJ is is the best MMA fighter so far, proportionally.

I still have love for other great champions like Anderson Silva (10), Georges St-Pierre (9), Jon Jones* (8), José Aldo (7), Amanda Nunes (7).

*you know why there is an asterisk here

ELI5 Why/how did Middle Eastern countries adopt a black Burka as their clothing when it is so hot there?

Edit: best answer: https://www.nature.com/articles/283373a0.pdf “We report here that the amount of heat gained by a Bedouin exposed to the hot desert is the same whether he wears a black or a white robe. The additional heat absorbed by the black robe was lost before it reached the skin”

If Ian Machado wins there are going to be some receipts collected here.

I’m not saying he will, but Ive not seen a soul going all in on him. Also, ignore where I used the meme. I like more than one sport ok.

There should be a sod watering guide in the sticky/wiki thingy. Seattle.

It seems like a good amount of people just want/need to know how much to water their sod. Can a mod add that? Seattle

CMV: AI development has reached or will reach “runaway” self improvement within 10 years if it hasn’t already.

This is coming from a non coder perspective. I don’t actually know how LLMs “really” work, this is mostly based on what OpenAI and others have stated.

So my definition of “runaway self improvement” is this:
The model is able to look at its own coding, use its processing model on its own coding, and test multiple codes against each other to see which updates improve the model most based on the frameworks for measurement we have already given it. Repeated infinitely and faster than we could manually.

Now, some dumb fuck is going to give it the capacity and/or instructions to rewrite new iterations of its own code and test them against prior iterations.

Now here’s the part that I already know is my weakest argument, there will likely come to a point where the AI will be able to look at all of the information about itself and available to it, and see room for improvement that the previous model couldn’t see. Or humans could see.

So, while I have thoughts about the benevolence of this AI, that is not the point of this CMV. This is just me trying to educate myself on the technical possibility of AIs that can improve upon themselves.

Thanks!

CMV: Supporting technology that removes disabilities has no bearing on my respect for disabled (or differently abled) people.

Firstly, I see the slippery slope argument, “if everyone gets the procedure that removes the disability, their culture or language will be erased.” This could be true, or it could be like handwriting is today. A totally respectable and valuable skill that while unnecessary, can be useful when technology fails or is unavailable.

But for those who want it? HOLY FUCK WHAT A GAME CHANGER!

Going from deaf to hearing is amazing! Imagine when we can do the same for sight. For wheelchair bound people. For autistic people or people like myself with brain issues (FND if you want to know).

Anyways, this does not mean I want to remove or decrease in ANY WAY the accommodations we have made mandatory to support disabled people. I also don’t and won’t judge anyone for opting not to get those procedures. Any procedure has risks and if you don’t want to, fine by me. But don’t appose my support of it like it is an erasure of your culture. I want diversity of culture. We are multicultural by nature and there is value to the whole in accepting and supporting differently abled people with accommodations AND cures.

Has any government successfully banned intoxication of any kind?

Funnily enough, I mean this both ways. 1. A specific kind of intoxication. 2. Any intoxicant down to zero.

Grasso is so good for the sport right now.

I just love watching her fights and her demeanour out of the cage.

She’s not a monster like Amanda was, but she gives me the same appreciation for skills.

I just like it when humble fighters win. Like GSP or Mighty Mouse.

CMV: Illia Toporia is better than Connor McGreggor was in his prime.

ONLY TALKING ABOUT IN CAGE SKILL. NOT talking about impact, popularity, or anything outside of the cage.

Sure the Jose Aldo knock out was a SEMINAL moment in the sport. But what Toporia is doing dismantling the decisions is extraordinary.

His only potential challenger in my opinion would be to go after Islam. And that is only because Islam is WAAAY bigger and stronger. If they were the same size, I still give it to Toporia. Besides the point.

I also appreciate Ilia’s decorum in the cage. No fouls, eye pokes or dirty stuff. Just low heart rate collected focus and performance.

I just hope he is recognised by us old guard fans as being as special as he is.

Huge win! The local kids at the volleyball net all yelled “Rob’s here!” when I showed up!

This means a lot to me and I am very grateful.

I’m leaving this intentionally open ended because I’m curious about how people will interpret it.

For me personally, I have hard time evaluating this for myself.
