RELEASE: N64ever - the definite flashcard menu based onN64FlashMenu-N64ever

https://github.com/bjerreman/N64FlashcartMenu-N64ever

Noobs: download sc64menu.n64 and put it on the root folder of your SD card.

Here are the highlight:

  • Favorites Grid is the home screen — a masonry layout of cover art, not a file list.
  • Universal "More" menu (R) — one menu for everything: launch, favorite, per-game art, grid settings, hardware, history, settings, file browser.
  • Inspect popup (A) — cover + a 2+2 metadata block (name/developer over date/region) and a scrollable description sized to fit without scrolling for most games; sits on top of the grid.
  • Shrink-wrapped File Browser popup — favorite ROMs (single or whole folders), launch, with a live favorites counter. Full file management (Copy/Move/Paste, Delete, Rename + Create folder via an on-screen keyboard), reachable even in an empty folder.
  • ROM boot — optionally boot a chosen ROM on power-on after a cancellable art countdown (userland, no firmware autoboot; hold START at boot to disable).
  • 60 fps render with per-frame animations tuned to match; grid Tile: Square/Box sizing.
  • Great metadata support - don't sweat it.
  • Built-in text database — 445 games with title/developer/dates/description (100% have a title + a back-of-box description). Binary-searched by 3-char base code.
  • Special editions — ROMs that reuse another game's NUS code (e.g. OoT Master QuestSmash Remix) get their own name/date/description + art, matched on the filename.
  • Build-type labels — Demo / Prototype / Beta ROMs are recognised from their filename dump tags and flagged in Inspect (so a missing cover reads as "this is a demo", not a bug).
  • Blank-cart placeholders — an uncovered game shows a realistic label-removed N64 cart (or 64DD disk) instead of a generic placeholder.
  • 64DD disc support — expansion discs (e.g. F-Zero X Expansion Kit) link to a base cartridge; the link is a manual, per-region disclink config (English ⇄ Japanese cache independently), and launching an unlinked expansion disc from Files offers to link it.
  • Animated screensaver — idle cover-art marquee; also used as the live background of the redesigned Menu Information (one scrollable list in a rainbow popup, N64ever logo on top).
  • Cancel/abort — B aborts a folder-favorite (full undo) or an A-Z sort mid-run.
  • Game Metadata register — on-device diagnostic of which art/text sources exist per game.
  • Custom splash — user PNG as the boot splash.
  • Everything is a popup over the grid (except a few deliberately-black screens).
  • 2048-favorite cap.

Much love,
Bjerreman

Leitzphone - time to sell the Q3?

Obviously not, but as a Leica user since the M9, I have been very intrigued by the new Leitzphone (a Xiaomi 17 Ultra with added Leica software and hardware tweaks). The Leica lens simulations sounded really interesting as did the camera tech, and I nearly bought one sight unseen for a mighty price of £1700. Instead I thought I’d ask Leica if they would send me one for review and they did.

I put it through its paces to see if it could possibly replace my Leica Q3 and act like a “real camera”. As you can imagine, there are pros and cons. The lens simulations are indeed very interesting (fancy a 90mm Thambar Noctilux f/0.95?) but the camera software is a usability nightmare. There’s a lot of potential that could be released with some software updates - I really hope Leica and Xiaomi pull their fingers out. Sadly as well as the software being a mess, the much vaunted lens ring is very un-Leica in build quality and operation.

UPDATE: Here is the conclusion from my time with the Leitzphone following constructive feedback in the comments:

Is my Q3 for sale? No. Definitively not. Neither is my current phone, the Samsung S25 Ultra. I had thought of trading it for the Leitzphone before getting a hands-on, but now I’m glad I didn’t.

My original question going into this review was: Has smartphone tech and “computational photography” risen to such a level that it can replace “proper camera” hardware, glass and sensors? Could I ditch my Leica Q3 and just use a phone? Not quite, but it’s not far off. We are getting a good look at what is coming down the line in the next 3 years.

The user interface and usability issues of the Leitzphone’s camera app make switching inconceivable for me. I despise lazy design and lacklustre implementation in any product. In one that costs £1,699 plus another £179 for the grip, in a flagship top-of-the-range luxury phone, it is unforgivable. I can almost see the UI designer weeping as the product manager said “look, just put the lens selector in that corner, but don’t call it a lens selector, and don’t bother with rotating those icons and text as we have to launch in a week”.

I see it as a huge opportunity that has been missed. I’m sure that a bunch of these will be sold, but I foresee them languishing in a bedside drawer or at 2nd hand store CEX in 12 months for a fraction of their original price.

This is a real shame as the hardware and technology in the phone is incredible. The Leica version feels great with its ridged metal surround. It looks amazing. The Pro grip and case are significant additions. The physical camera and lens setup is really brilliant. Computational photography is getting really good now. Better than my flagship Samsung for sure. The ability to replicate the character and characteristics of Leica lenses is quite extraordinary even given the issues I have mentioned.
However, when I just had my “daily” S25 Ultra with me, I found myself missing the Leica lens simulations. The S25U cameras feel a bit boring by comparison. Hmmmmm….maybe the Leitzphone is growing on me, warts and all.

You can read my draft review on my website before it hits Macfilos shortly: https://www.lens57.com/blog/leitzphone-time-to-sell-the-leica-q3

Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to answer.

Developing a new menu - bring suggestions

Hey all, I'm currently building a new version of the menu for Summercart, it will be based around a grid view with box art and have a lot of neat things packed into it. I'm gonna do one big release and hand off the code so it can be absorbed into mainline if those people want to use any of it. This is your chance to bring some suggestions if there is anything specific you have wanted. Maybe I will implement it. I'm considering doing some file management upgrades as well.

Release BlueRetro-Switch-2-controllers-fix · bjerreman/BlueRetro-Switch2Fix

I updated the BlueRetro project to support more than one Switch 2 controller, tested with up to four Switch 2 NSO Gamecube controllers. I included a binary for the Laserbear internal kit which is what I have so you can update easily.

I have finally become a true photographer. I can sit at my desk, look to my right and smile knowing that I have made it.

Just picked up a Leica q3.

How would I take photos like Noah Dillon!?

What type of camera can I use, that doesn’t look too new but also not pixelated and old. And how to get this flash effect please? It is a really strong on camera flash?

Thanks so much!

Don’t hate on me, I do what I want.

I grabbed this Rebel G II with a kit lens for like $30.00 with fresh batteries. I had an R to EOS adapter that someone gave me with this Elmarit 28 so why the hell not. It worked great! Such a nice light alternative to my R8.

Hey r/leica. I built a small photo challenge site/app for friends called Or It Didn't Happen — private groups, themed challenges and prompts, everyone submits. It's very new, but I'm hoping it is the kinda thing to inspire photographers to grow their communities and pick up their cameras more.

I've just opened a Leica Challenge Club group on it and figured this was the right place to mention it. First prompt is red dot, red thing (I couldn't resist...) — one frame of something red out in the wild this week. Postbox, jumper, tail light, etc.

Free, no ads, runs in your browser or as a PWA app. If you fancy it, group's open:

https://oritdidnthappen.com/join/s/9d5e719f4790483b9afb.

Happy to answer questions about the app too.

(Mods — checked the rules but happy to take this down if it's overstepping.)
