Can you do both direction and story writing together?

Hi, I’m an animation student, and I’m thinking of trying filmmaking as well. Being an animation student has made me realise that I care more about the stories and concepts than the animation itself. I enjoy it, but honestly, I don’t really care about the medium, and I’m thinking of trying filmmaking as well, just to explore and see where it takes me.

But my real question is: can I do directing while also being a story writer? I’ve seen a lot of amazing directors doing that, but whenever I talk to an expert about it, they’re always like, “These are two different things,” and because of that, I’m not really sure how to proceed from here.

What exact steps should I take from here if I want to achieve something like that? I have a lot of concepts, and I’d really like to work on them.

I think i lost myself and idk what to do about it.

I’m a 20-year-old student in my final year of college, studying animation, and honestly, I feel pretty lost about what I’m supposed to do next.

Since childhood, I was a really extroverted person, but over time I became more introverted. During lockdown, things got especially bad. I was depressed, lonely, and felt like I had no purpose. I spent a lot of time binge-watching Netflix, but eventually I started creating stories and ideas in my head. That eventually led me to animation. I felt like I had finally found my purpose: I wanted to create my own animated show someday.

At the time, I was also overweight, so I started working out and lost a lot of weight. I became healthier and even got to the point where my abs were somewhat visible. But despite all of that, I was extremely lonely and didn’t really have friends.

I remember thinking that once school ended and college started, I would finally socialize and make lots of friends. And I did. I pushed myself way outside my comfort zone and basically tried to become an extrovert again. I actually enjoyed socializing, but I also had a lot of social anxiety. I was constantly trying to force myself to talk to people and get out of my comfort zone.

The problem was that I wasn’t very good at conversations. I didn’t really know how to interact with people properly, and I think I sometimes approached socializing in the wrong way. Because of that, I had a lot of bad experiences and some people ended up seeing me as a weirdo.

There were a lot of rejections and embarrassing experiences. Eventually, though, I found a really good group of friends, and I’m still very close with them today. Honestly, I’ve never experienced this kind of friendship before. Most of my friendships in the past felt temporary, and I never really had many friends. So having people I genuinely care about and who genuinely care about me means a lot to me.

After that, though, I slowly stopped socializing as much. Even in my own class, I started talking less. I became more comfortable staying to myself.

I also became inconsistent with the gym and gained some of the weight back. I got rejected by girls several times, and I’ve never been in a relationship. I also started realizing that I wasn’t very good at animation.

That one hurt a lot because animation was supposed to be my purpose.

But instead of giving up, I worked hard and improved. I became much better than I was before. The problem is that I’m constantly comparing myself to other people. No matter how much I improve, I always feel like I should be better. I always want to be at the top, and I’m rarely satisfied with where I am.

I also started therapy because, despite having good friends, I still felt incredibly lonely. I don’t completely understand why I feel that way. I have people I care about, but there’s still this feeling of emptiness and loneliness that I can’t seem to get rid of.

I’ve always had this strong desire to socialize, meet lots of people, and make a lot of friends. I also wanted to talk to girls because I’ve never dated anyone. At the same time, I sometimes feel embarrassed about that desire. I worry that I’m being desperate or “simping,” which makes me feel even worse about myself.

And now I’ve reached the biggest problem: my career.

I’m graduating soon, and I don’t even know what I want to do anymore.

I’ve realized that I don’t actually love animation itself. What I love is storytelling. I love imagining stories, characters, worlds, scenes, and ideas, and then finding a medium through which I can bring them to life.

My real dream is to make my own films and become a director. I don’t really care whether they’re animated or live-action. I just want to tell stories through film.

But now I’m confused about what I’m supposed to do.

Should I start making short films? Should I continue with animation? Should I try live-action? If I choose live-action, it feels like I’ll have to start all over again because I’ve spent years studying animation.

And one of my biggest fears is getting a job and becoming stuck there. I’m terrified of spending years doing something I don’t care about and eventually realizing that I never pursued what I actually wanted. At the same time, I don’t know how realistic it is to just chase filmmaking without having a stable job.

Socially, I’m confused too.

I’ve stopped talking to a lot of people, especially people in my class. Part of me really wants to socialize. I want to meet people, have conversations, make friends, and experience life. But another part of me just doesn’t care anymore.

I’m exhausted from constantly putting myself out there, getting rejected, being misunderstood, or feeling like people think I’m weird. I don’t know if I’m actually becoming more introverted, or if I’m simply tired of getting hurt.

I want a girlfriend. I want to experience being in a relationship. But at the same time, I don’t want to do anything about it. The thought of putting myself out there again feels exhausting, especially because I already struggle with my self-esteem.

There are also a lot of family issues that I haven’t really talked about because explaining everything would make this even longer. I don’t talk to my family much either, so I think that probably affects me more than I realize.

Right now, I’m doing a lot of things that are objectively good for me. I wake up at 5 AM, go to the gym, eat relatively healthy, and work on my assignments on time. I’m trying to be disciplined.

But mentally, I feel stuck.

I feel lonely. I feel sad. I don’t feel interested in many things anymore, and I don’t find much joy in things that used to excite me.

I’ve talked about a lot of this with my therapist, and therapy has genuinely helped me a lot. I’m in a much better place than I was before. But lately, I feel like I’ve reached a point where even therapy isn’t giving me much direction anymore. It feels like I’m stuck, and even my therapist doesn’t really know what to do next.

And that’s where I am right now.

I’m graduating, I don’t know what I want to do with my career, I’m unsure whether I want animation or live-action, I’m socially exhausted but still lonely, I want connection but don’t want to put myself through more rejection, and I’m struggling with my self-esteem.

Most importantly, I feel like I’ve retreated back into my comfort zone.

And honestly, right now, I don’t want to leave it.

How can I make it intresting?

Hey, im new to writing and i have this idea of a story for my 2 minutes animation project.

Story beats-

1.) A man enjoying a peaceful walk through the park with his dog.

2.) The dog curiously watches birds and observes the environment and is happy to be there.

3.) Another man notices the dog, comes toeard the dog owner and points at (no dogs allowed) sigh.

4.)He angerily confronts thr owner and demands thst he leave.

5.) The owner insists his dog isn't bothering anyone.

6.) The disagreement turns into a heated arrugument.

7.) A crowd gathers, some watching while others also joining the arrugument.

8.) The dog is seen sitting at the side of the part silently watching all the people arguing.

9.) Suddenly, the perspective shifts to the dog's pov.

10.) Humans are seen barking into eachother like dogs and littering everywhere like animals.

11.) The dog and other animals are seen calm minding there own business.

12.) The humans continue barking at eachother and the dog walks away, leaving the audience with the realization that humans can act more like animals while animals can be more civilized.

(I want this short film to be a bit funny with also having a deep meaning and I'd love your feedback and opening)

Thank you

Short horror story idea ( please give your feedback)

Btw this is for my animation project whichbis only gona be 2 mins.

A woman reflects on the story of her life, recounting her journey from a bullied five year-old girl to a resilient, fulfilled adult. Guided by her mother's wisdom, she overcomes heartbreak, harassment, her parents' divorce, rejection, and countless personal struggles. Through perseverance, she builds a career, finds love in college, and eventually marries, believing she has finally found the peaceful life she always longed for.

As she finishes telling her story, out of nowhere a loud voice begins shouting, "Wake up!" before the next scene appears. She suddenly awakens in a dark room, terrified, facing what appears to be her husband except something about him is subtly wrong. As reality begins to unravel, We are shown that her real husband may already be dead. The mysterious figure repeatedly insists that she is dreaming and must wake up, slowly manipulating her perception of reality. She grew anxious then he rang a bell in his hand and all of a sudden she is calm like she thinks she is dreaming, picks up a gun and shoots herself after which her fake husband is seen giggling and and giving a creepy smile while this whoe time his face is not properly shown.

The film ends with a retro 1980s/90s-style emergency television broadcast revealing that these encounters are not isolated incidents. Unknown entities capable of perfectly imitating people (like alternatives in mendala catalogue) have begun appearing across the world. They rarely attack physically; instead, they manipulate amd hypnotise their victims through deception and psychological coercion, replacing them while leaving humanity questioning what is real. Their origins, motives, and true nature remain unknown, leaving the audience with the unsettling realization that this woman's story was only one of many.

My sister makes me feel suicidal ( please help)

I'm a 20-year-old college student, and before explaining my current situation, I think it's important to share some background about my family.

Also it might not seems like a big issue for others but its kinda is to me so yea

Growing up, my family always had serious problems. My dad has severe anger issues and was often verbally abusive toward my mom, and sometimes even physically abusive. My mom also struggled with schizophrenia, which made things even more difficult at home.

During those years, my sister was the person I was closest to. We had a really strong bond throughout school and even during the beginning of my college life. She had some anger issues too, which I think may have been influenced by the environment we grew up in, but despite that, we were very close.

Things started changing around 2024. My mom's condition got worse, and she became very isolated. Around the same time, my sister was struggling to find a job and was under a lot of stress.after that she did find one of the best job but since then, her personality changed dramatically. She became extremely insensitive, easily irritated, and started taking her frustration out on me.

She gets angry over the smallest things and often says hurtful things just to make me feel bad. She knows all of my insecurities because I trusted her growing up, but instead of protecting those vulnerabilities, she uses them against me during arguments. She's shouted my personal struggles in front of other people, including things I told her in confidence, like my difficulty making friends.

I'm a sensitive person, and I've been in therapy for the past year. Therapy has helped me improve a lot, but whenever I come home and spend time with my sister, we end up arguing. Most of the time, she's rude for no reason. If I tell her she's being mean, she dismisses my feelings by saying I'm "too sensitive" and that "everyone is like this." The truth is, I've met many people outside my family, including honest friends who tell me when I'm wrong, and I've never experienced someone treating me the way she does.

One incident that really affected me happened because I accidentally kept a pillow upside down. She became disproportionately angry, insulted me, and said things she knew would hurt me the most. I ended up having a complete mental breakdown. Even after seeing how badly I was affected, she never apologized. Instead, she simply said, "I have anger issues. That's just how I am."

Recently, after finishing my first internship, I came home hoping things would be different. At first, everything seemed fine, but then she started constantly criticizing my appearance. She kept saying my hair looked bad, smelled bad, that I had dandruff, and that my pants looked ugly. She repeated these comments throughout the entire day.

The strange thing is that I don't even have dandruff—I checked—and none of my friends have ever made comments like that. If they think something doesn't suit me, they'll tell me honestly, but they don't insult me. Even if I like my hairstyle or my clothes, that's my personal choice. I don't understand why she feels the need to control how I look or criticize me over things that don't affect her.

That same night, I accidentally slept on her pillow without realizing it. She got furious, called me disgusting, and spoke to me in a very disrespectful tone. We argued again. It feels like there's a double standard: if I react to how she treats me, I'm called a crybaby and "too sensitive." But if she gets angry over something as small as a pillow, somehow that's considered normal.

At this point, I feel emotionally exhausted. If someone outside my family treated me this way, I would simply distance myself. But because she's my sister, it's much harder. What's especially painful is that we used to have a better relationship than I had with either of my parents. Now, I honestly feel closer to my parents than I do to her.

The constant criticism, disrespect, and refusal to take responsibility have damaged our relationship. Every time I try to explain how her behavior affects me, she tells me it's my fault. It feels like I'm talking to a wall.

There have been two moments in my life when I had severe mental breakdowns, and both happened because of arguments with my sister. At my lowest point, the way she treated me even made me feel suicidal and convinced me that maybe I was the problem. Looking back now, with some distance, I can see things more clearly. I know I'm a sensitive person, but I also know that repeatedly insulting someone, mocking their insecurities, and refusing to acknowledge the hurt you've caused isn't healthy behavior.

I don't know what to do anymore. I'm tired of feeling disrespected over such small things, and I'm struggling to accept that the person I used to trust the most has become someone who makes me feel the worst.

Please tell me what should I do in this sitution because honestly I really feel like going back to my college which im going to in 3 days and never contracting her again untill somehow she resolves her own problem.

My sister makes me feel suicidal (please help)
