Frankie from the 1951 UPA animated short "Rooty Toot Toot"

UPA has always been a studio that's very interesting and fascinating to me, their work is so minimalistic but really stylise, and I think that Rooty toot toot is probably my number one fave from their catalogue.

I think Frankies design is very unique and imperfect (in a good way) , I love that her accessories and clothes are just abstract shapes, especially with her bow or hat (idk what it is) as these round circle shapes, and her hair being abunch of squiggly lines.

I also think that her facial expressions are really funny and cute too. With them going off or on model. And her poses being very noodle but also has this dynamic feeling to them

Marjane Satrapi's Persona from her Film Persepolis (2007)

I think her designreally excels the aesthetic of her own film and how tough it was from her own perspective (especially with the conflicts that were happening in the Iranian Revolution) , the facial expressions of her design are really expressive, especially with her pupils in her eyes. and some surreal animated moments to signify on how she's feeling in the moment.

RIP Legend

The standards of Indie Animated Projects being not considered "indie"

Examples:

Mary and Max (2009)

Persepolis (2007)

ever since indie animation has become really popular, I feel that some Indie Animation Fans (not all) have some sort of standard when it comes indie animated projects being indie, some have tried to say that if a indie animated project is backed up by a major studio label, that its not considered indie anymore (despite these projects appearing at film festivals) and I just find that incredibly disingenuous because if a animated project is independently made, it is considered indie by default. (and is not mainstream).

Persepolis was produced by 20 animators within its production and was made using graphic tablets. and took over 18th months from the years of 2005 to 2007. And despite all of the hardships that took to make the film. It was shown at a film festival and was awarded several awards, (with them including 6 at film festivals and award shows) during the films released with critical praised and the like.

Mary and Max's production lasted over 57 weeks, using 133 separate sets, 212 puppets, and 475 miniature. And appeared at the 2009 Sundance film festival, and just like Persepolis received over critical praised . And received over 4 awards, and was nominated 7 awards.

If Myca Dinh Le (right) and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (left) , the child actors who were tragically killed on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie, were alive today, Myca Dinh Le would have been 51 years old and Renee Shin-Yi Chen would have been 50 years old in 2026
