Watching this for the 2nd time and it comes across as the best example when a writer/director (Anthony Minghella an Englishman who passed 5 years later) lets the master thespian in all these a-list actors, many of whom are not American, let it rip with their takes on Southern civil war era accents, and you realize American accents are not that easy.

It verges on satire, to the point a savvy editor could add a laugh track and you might have a good movie. Even Walter Murch couldn’t fix it.

For instance when Jude Law’s character says “Move away from the baby!” I haven’t heard bay-bee so overwrought since Charlize Theron reminded me I was watching a South African trying a southern accent in “The Devil’s Advocate.”

Anyway it’s remarkable to me how many good actors gave such shit performances, and I had to rant, and I’m done giving it any more thought.

IMDb has it rated at 7.2.

How do you regard this movie?

Not as serious as it may sound. Growing up loving cartoons, Looney Toons especially, subtly and unconsciously, dogs were always male, and cats were female. This bias exists 60 years later. Upon meeting/greeting a new dog/cat the pronouns are there, without a thought. Can you relate?

edit: I’m not asking for examples of male cartoon cats. Or for female cartoon dogs.
