before and after

easily ten years of buildup from gas stoves. tried every combination of bar keeps friend, the pink stuff, dawn, baking soda, magic eraser…. none of it even touched it. ended up having to very carefully scrape it all off with a razor blade! glad to have her back lol

mid-century built-ins

my new house (1945) has these beautiful original wooden built-ins and details. i have some shelves i’d like to stain to match. they won’t be on the same wall so it definitely doesn’t have to be exact (there’s already some variation in the existing wood) but i’d love to get close. anyone know what stain colors i might start by looking at?

ideas for this piece?

i got this because it was the perfect size and real wood unlike 99% of garbage out there these days. but i don’t love it. definitely going to change the hardware… any way to get rid of or minimize the scalloped bottom part? also i welcome ai mockups bc idk how to make them lol

mustard kitchen

just sold my house and bought a new one. i LOVED my old kitchen (first pic). i love mustardy yellows and olive greens and charcoal grey etc. i was thinking id use the same paint color in my new kitchen (second pic), but now im doubting it because the new kitchen has white cabinets/counters vs the old kitchens grey ones with butcher block counters.

any thoughts on how i can achieve the same mood ?

garage studio - epoxy, sealant, or paint?

i'm buying a house and turning my detached garage into a studio. i have the same set up in the place i rent now, but the raw concrete floor is the biggest pain in my ass to clean. before i move in, i plan to do something to the floor of the new garage and would love to hear what others have done and what's necessary vs nice to have. it seems like:

epoxy coating is the most durable, but also takes the most time and is more expensive. most of the reviews i've seen about the rustoleum kit (and needing the anti-slip additive) are from folks who are parking their cars in their garages.

sealant seems the easiest and cheapest, but i don't really have a concept of what the floor would be like - would it still hold on to a lot of clay?

lots of options for paint, some anti-slip, about the same cost as epoxy but much quicker to get done.

not interested in laying mats. garage is about 250 sq ft.

thoughts?

looking for blinds that let you add optional liner

i live in the pacific northwest where most of the year you want to let in every drop of sunlight out there, so blinds are more for privacy than light blocking. however, the bedroom in my new house has east facing windows. i'd love to be able to get the same blinds for all windows, but have the bedroom ones block more light.

everything i've seen in this style is either light filtering or there's a liner for light-blocking. anyone know of a brand where you can get the same blinds and select with or without liner?

landscapers got rid of TOH while i was out of town…

i rent, landlord pays for landscapers. only communication i have with them is if i see the guys in my yard. i found a tree of heaven right before i went out of town and when i came back it was gone. i know it was the landscapers because my lawn was also mowed.

well, i assumed they knew what they were doing and it was too late to do anything about it anyway. but today i see 6 TOH sprouting up. and that’s just from my chair, i haven’t even stood up to look around.

can i yank these at this stage or should i ask the landlord (PM company technically) to tell them to bring roundup?

Portland (OR) potters, c'mere!

I was going to post this in the portland sub but I noticed a lot of folks commenting on a recent post about Georgie's clay so I know you're here 😊

I've been in Portland for ~2 years and would love to make friends with other local potters/ceramicists. Are there ways you've found community through pottery? I have a home studio, so I'm not interested in membership... I did join a studio for a few months when I first moved here and no one spoke to each other, which was really weird for me coming from a co-op studio in another state that was very social. I've taken a few workshops at Morning Ceramics which were great, but different people every time. Are there meetups or collectives or any other ways I can find a pottery community? Any studios hiring part time or looking for volunteers maybe? I'm out of ideas and would love to hear yours if you got 'em!

i’m proud and just wanted to share!

i made an herbal mouthwash that i used regularly for a year and it healed my periodontal disease. now im growing all of the herbs i need to make the tinctures instead of buying them dried. i had no idea when i planted echinacea purpurea seed that it took two or more years to bloom, but i just harvested my first batch! it’s so satisfying to grow my own medicine!!

question about fit and shrinkage rates

not a new potter but new to using slips and engobes for surface decoration. this may be a dumb question but i want to coat a dark brown clay body with white slip for sgraffito. the brown clay has a shrinkage rate of about 14% and the white clay used for the slip about 11%.

does this matter ?

it’s for decorative tile, nothing that will be in contact with food but does need to be durable.

advice for improving my makers mark stamp

what design features make a good stamp?

i got a 1” round stamp made from my logo. the name (covered up here) and the word ceramics are the same font and they turn out fine. it’s very difficult to get a good stamp of the moons - i have to press too hard for it to be usable in most circumstances. i know the problem is my design and not the way the stamp was made, but im not sure what i need to change. is it that they’re too close together? or that it’s too much surface area? it seems like thin lines work better… i’d prefer not to have the moons be outlined instead of filled but i can if that’s the solution!

ice dye - 8 hours vs overnight

just for anyone wondering - these two onesies were under the same pile of ice, basically died as one piece. pulled one out after 8 hours because i was excited and am impatient 😬 left the other for 24h. no significantly noticeable difference.

quick q - will a longer soak time help?

i soaked some shirts in soda ash for ice dyeing, but then changed my mind about one shirt and put it into a tub instead. i had wrung it out, but didn’t rinse. typically with tube dyeing, i follow dharmas instructions and i have the garment in the dye tub for 30-60mins before adding the soda ash solution as a “fixative”.

in this case, since the garment was already saturated with soda ash, will a longer soak in the dye bath help with saturation? or not even?

i’m science-challenged and have been winging it but have been really happy with my results so far! just not sure how exactly the soda ash interacts.

thanks!

floppy tops and early scapes

last weekend i forgot the hose was on and overwatered this one row of garlic. today i noticed the tops are flopping and they are putting up scapes.

planted and mulched in october, started watering weekly ~a month ago.

sadly my labels wore off and i cant tell what variety this is, but i bought them locally from garlicana (https://www.garlicana.com/garlic-varieties/unclassified-garlics/). i remember i did buy one early season variety.

am i cooked? anything i can do to help them recover ?

help me plan a solo trip/grief retreat to kauai?

i just lost my dad and my soul dog within a month of each other. i haven't been able to travel in a few years because of caregiving responsibilities, and now i need a vacation more than ever. i booked flights to kauai in early june and am a little overwhelmed with the amount of influencer content online and looking for ideas for my trip.

i mostly just want to RELAX and decompress - lay on the beach, read, snorkel, eat seafood... somewhere i could bike or walk places is a bonus. might go on some short hikes. i don't need fancy amenities, not looking to hit up any 'attractions', just somewhere calm and quiet with easy beach access and good food.

mostly wondering what area i should narrow my search to. where would you go if you were in my position? i'm a solo female traveler, if it matters. thanks <3
