I have heard some people say that the Death and resurrection of Christ can ONLY save people from the penalty of sin, but NOT the power and presence of sin itself.

They do believe that Jesus would say people from the power of sin, but they think that being saved from the power is the result of spiritual transformation and sanctification, but not part of the death and resurrection of Christ.
