Say hello to Pancake, the sweet little baby I rescued from the highway!
Poor baby was very nearly flattened! (Hence the somewhat morbid name.) Her favorite thing to do is climb up me like a ladder and roll around, headbutt, and make biscuits on my face.
Does my kitten Pancake fit in here?
I just rescued this little baby off the side of a highway, I was told she might fit in here? Of course she doesn't have any breed documentation and I have no idea what her parents looked like, so I suppose she's just a "domestic short hair," technically.
Will her coat change over time? Will she keep her pretty blue eyes?

Almost hit this Highway Kitten! (2/2)
Part 2/2: I rescued this little kitten from the side of a highway! She was a bit scared at first, but warmed up very quickly after getting some food in her belly. The absolute irony of all this is that, I had actually recently been considering a second cat to keep my resident cat company.
A couple weeks ago I found a super friendly stray cat, who I surrendered to my local animal shelter. Instantly I regretted that choice, as I think it would have been interesting to try introducing him to my resident cat. Anyways, this sparked my interest in adopting a second cat, but after several visits to the shelter I just couldn't pull the trigger as there's so much uncertainty as far as wether or not my resident cat will get along with the newcomer. So, I settled on fostering, and had myself all registered with the local shelter, with a bathroom set up as a quarantine room.
I'd planned to pick up my first foster after this weekend- but the mysterious agents of the Cat Delivery System had other plans, and sent me this sweet baby instead. I'm really hoping some maternal instincts kick in and my resident cat is willing to help take care of the kitty. She's been really curious, sniffling at the bathroom door, but I'll give it a little time before a face-to-face introduction.
I almost hit this Highway Kitten! (1/2)
A couple days ago I was zooming along on the highway, several hours away from home. As I passed a big semi truck, a little white fluffball ran across the highway in front of us, fortunately just fast enough that I missed it by a couple feet. I couldn't tell if the critter was a cat or opossum, but no way was I going to risk leaving a cat to get run over.
So, I pulled off the highway and jogged back to where I thought I'd seen the animal. Fortunately it was pretty easy to find this fluffball, as she was screaming her little lungs out! She was quite scared and tried hiding from me in a little cave, but I managed to scoop her out and return to my car without getting bitten. It's perhaps a bit morbid, but I've been calling the wee kitten "Pancake", as in "She was almost as flat as a pancake!" That's just a placeholder until I find a more permanent name for her.
I'll continue in a second post, with better footage of the baby.
Just an hour outside calms her down considerably
I haven't let my cat free roam in a few days, but figured I should let her have some outdoor time as I'll be gone for the weekend. She's been pretty antsy, energetic, and cued-up lately, but just spending an hour outside running around, chomping grass, and laying in the sun has calmed her down immensely. Mira isn't much of a lap cat in the summer, but she was so relaxed that she climbed right up and got comfy, as you can see in the Pic.
I've moved NMC into my bathroom for temporary holding before he's returned to a shelter- Not sure my resident is a fan
This friendly grey cat showed up about a block away, all the neighbors in the area say that he's not housed, and have been feeding him. I've gotten him checked for a chip and am holding him in my bathroom until his surrender appointment- I'm not sure that my own cat (white paws) is a fan, though.
Found cat, "Sheldon," Ohio City
Hi all. This cat has apparently appeared in the neighborhood a week or two ago, in pretty good health and very friendly. Not at all typical stray/feral condition. I took him to the APL and they were unable to contact the owner registered to his chip. He had been adopted from them APL in 2024 under the name "Sheldon."
If the owner doesn't reply, he will be surrendered soon to re-enter the shelter for adoption. Please let me know of you know anything about this cat!
The goal: ice cream shop
I live just around the corner from this ice cream shop, and ever since last year it has been my goal to walk my cat there for a scoop of ice cream (for myself.) I think they do also offer pup-cups for any dogs that come by, but I'd have to research ingredients to see if that's cat friendly.
We've slowly gotten better at walking; at first I'd let the cat go where she wanted and I'd just eventually have to carry her back home, but she's learned to come along when I gently pull on the leash and call to her. It's far from perfect but I can more or less walk her in a direction of my choosing for perhaps as far as a half-mile.
The next challenges are going to be walking across the intersection (might just need to carry her? Cars can spook her.) But, I'm also not sure how she'd do inside or in the vicinity of the shop. There's usually loads of people lined up. She likes people, but I'm not sure if a small crowd might be too stressful.
Pulled over on my way home to say hi to this friendly little guy, and then he spent the next twenty minutes curled up next to me
I don't know this cat's status- he seems too well groomed and friendly to be a stray. It was very happy to hang out with me, but wasn't trying to follow me home, jump in my car, etc in the way my own cat did when she decided to adopt me. I think it's someone's cared-for indoor-outdoor cat.
Ekek's while on a walk
She doesn't really enunciate well, though, so it just sounds like a weird meow.
Who did this beautiful wing cover belong to?
I'm visiting the Grand Canyon, Arizona, and noticed this beautiful iridescent wing cover on the ground. What beetle did this come off of?
Had a friendly run-in with the Mayor of Tremont today
He's got my vote.
Hi, all. Around a year and a half ago I was very lucky to buy this mysterious, seemingly custom-built bike off of a metal-scrapper.
Its too small for me and doesn't come with a functional set of wheels (missing the front wheel, and rear wheel is tubular and poorly built).
Anyways, it has an eclectic mix of Campagnolo parts which I've attempted to identify, but very frustratingly, Campy didn't seem to be a fan of stamping parts numbers or groupset names in this era... Soooo it's all a bit of a mystery.
What I have so far:
Brake calipers: "Mirage monoplanar."
Crankset: stamped "93", perhaps Campagnolo C-Record? Has the same self-extractors and a fairly polished finish.
Aero Seatpost: I'm not sure. Record or C-record of the early 90's?? There is a helical knurling on the clamp bolt, I vaguely recall reading somewhere that that was an indicator of a higher level seatpost, but I can't find that source now.
Headset: no clue. It has square wrench flats as many Campy headsets of this era did. I was comparing to a Athena-equipped '89 Bianchi I recently bought, and the whole headset seems taller. Maybe larger bearings? Not sure.
Rear derailleur: Record, but not sure what years. Browsing Disraeli gears, maybe a 1995 rd31-re?
Front derailleur: I'm just going to guess Early 90's C-Record. Really haven't done much comparison or research here, though
Shifters; front derailleur is friction and rear is 7sp indexed. No weird doohickey so not Syncro 1, but it doesn't have the knurled knob some of the syncro2 shifters have?
Wheel hub: Sheriff star
Freewheel: Super record aluminum/titanium 6 speed
Thanks 😊
Hi all, just wanted to make a follow-up to a "should I buy" post I made a couple weeks ago.
I bought this at a local shop's annual consignment sale. It was listed as an Eros, but knowing that Columbus SLX was top-end at the time, I suspected it was a bit higher up in the lineup. It has an SLX frame and what appears to be Campagnolo Athena, so it would have been third in Bianchi's lineup at the time behind the Mondiale and Supper leggera. I'm 97% certain that it is an '89 Giro, but strangely it does lack the model name and pantographing on the BB shell and seatstay caps. Not sure what's up with that.
It appears to have seen very little use, and the tires appear to have been original- the same as is listed in old catalog scans. I'm assuming it was used for a year or two and then stored away in an attic for a few decades.
I've cleaned it up and trued/serviced the wheels, but still need to do a more thorough overhaul to the other bearings, service the brakes/pads, possibly replace cables and housings, etc.
Hi, just wanted to post an update to a "should I buy" post I had made a couple weeks ago.
After cleaning the bike up a bit, servicing and truing the wheels, and installing some nice new tires, it's looking absolutely stunning. I do still need to do a more comprehensive overhaul, such as servicing the headset, BB, brake pads, new cables and housings and such.
Based on the serial number and parts, this appears to be a 1989 Bianchi Giro, although it's a bit funky as there is no model name on it and and it lacks the BB and seatstay caps pantographing that others have.
I was taking my cat for a late-night walk, when she stopped following me and seemed really interested in this clump of plants. I'm assuming this is catnip? I've given her dried store-bought nip in the past, but she showed zero interest.
