what are some tips for getting better at drawing faces?

Im not terrible, but i can never get the proportions right, or the perspective. I can copy from references pretty well when it comes to anything else, but my faces just always look off

does anyone have any tips? should i practice with tracing first? where is the best place to start? I tend to try and get the face shape first, but i often fail to then capture the facial features correctly

Im not specifically trying to get into realism, but i would like to start drawing people and faces however Im finding it hard to make any progress.
