I have an obsessive personality. Obsession is my transferable skill.

I pick a topic and pour my blood, sweat, and tears into it until I get bored. Then I move on to the next one.

The upside is that I end up knowing a little about a lot of things. The downside is that I never seem to develop a lasting passion.

I’m 24. People around me genuinely seem to love what they do. They have careers they’re excited about and goals they’re working towards. I, on the other hand, have a decent job as an SAP MM consultant. I can’t really complain. The hours are flexible, the workload is manageable, and the pay is fair.

But most days, I catch myself looking for my next obsession. A new topic to research. A new rabbit hole to disappear into for a few weeks or months.
When I don’t have one, I feel strangely restless. I work from home, and I’m incredibly fortunate to have that flexibility. But many days I have very little to do, so my mind starts searching for something to latch onto. More often than not, it latches onto personal problems. I sometimes wonder if that’s where a lot of my anxiety comes from.

Some days, like today, I feel like I’m wasting my potential. Not because I’m unsuccessful, but because I don’t know what to direct my energy toward. I know I’m capable of going incredibly deep into something, I just don’t know what that “something” is supposed to be.

When I was younger, I wanted to be an archaeologist. Then a marine biologist. Then I imagined a career in fashion or luxury. I wanted to become someone who knew their field inside and out. Sometimes I feel like I’m grieving all the lives I didn’t live.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Did you eventually find a career or purpose that held your curiosity for years? Or did you stop chasing the idea of a single passion and learn to build a meaningful life another way?
