How can I make my inks more like my idols (Samnee + Toriyama)?

I need some help making my inks more lively. I've done a lot of work this past year to make my work better and I decided I want to lean more on the simpler side than the more technical side of comic book art.

For example of the technical side (last two drawings), my Invincible & Atom Eve pieces were cool to work on, but they took way too much time to complete, & in hindsight they look really stiff & generic.

My most recent pieces (Mikasa, Toph, Teen Gohan and Kid Goku) took way less time to finish, but I feel they're missing something I can't quite put my finger on that'll make them look less amateurish. I tried focusing on the simple efficiency of both Toriyama & Chris Samnee, while sticking to a strict time limit, but there's something lacking in my recent work I can't quite pin down that just doesn't hit where they are yet. Could be as simple as they are traditional & I'm not, I'm not quite sure.

The best of my recent work is the 1st Goku image, but that's mainly b/c it's heavily referenced from Toriyama's work (it was a style study) and I don't want to rely on that as a crutch. The third image is my interpretation of Goku with no reference, and it felt ok but still lacking some oomph.

The last four images are Chris Samnee's work and the second image is Toriyama's work BTW. Everything else is my own. I can't add alt text for some reason to differentiate everything 👀

Where's the search bar??

Started using Ecosia a week ago and it's been decent. It looked almost exactly the same except there was a search bar. Now, randomly, it's just gone, and it's really frustrating me, and it seems there is no settings for it. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm using Vivaldi o

What's the best comic reader on Android? Comparable to Panels on iPad.

My iPad 12.9 went out just a little bit ago. I used it for drawing 60% of the time and reading comics the rest. I'm looking for an alternative tablet, either an iPad Air 13 or a Movink Pad Pro 14.

The main thing holding me back from being 100% on Android, is 1) Procreate is not available on Android, but I can live with just using CSP's simple mode, 2) Accessories are much better for iPads, even when I had a Tab S7 the accessories sucked compared to the iPad, 3) Panels, the comic reader app, is not available on Android and there currently seem to not be any plans to include it rn. This last one is a big one.

Panels is the perfect comic reader app. You download your files, add them into the app, and read. That's not the part that's great, the ORGANIZATION is killer.

My system was this; I had a main "DUMP" folder just for the comics I had downloaded recently. Everything else was sorted in a hierarchy. For example, there was a "BIG 2" folder for you know who. They each had a folder under that, and a folder for each character or line of comics under the name. I also had another section for "MANGA", then "Shonen", "Seinen", etc, with titles under that section. Like "NARUTO" and all it's chapters included. Even an area for "BORUTO" under that when I tried reading. All this organization does not impact your actual files at all. You can easily copy and move comics in multiple different sections if you want to as well, and I don't think this impacted storage much. UI is also simple and great, too. Not to mention within the reader it's easy to set it up to read Left to Right and Right to Left if you want, set bookmarks, jump through pages easily, and others features I don't remember but are good too.

I'm not sure if there is anything that is so easy to setup on Android. Sure you can put your comics under folders in the standard file manager but I remember that being a hassle generally instead of just doing it all in one app.

If there's a comic reader on Android with great organization and customization all within the app, PLS let me know. None of the ones I see recommended (Cdisplayex, ComicScreen, Astonishing) seem to scratch this itch. They also look dated compared to Panels.

If there is no alternative, I'm highly debating either getting an iPad just for comics, and the Movink for portable drawing (which will be a hassle to carry all around, especially if I have a 14in and 13in in my backpack), or just get an iPad Air 13in and call it a day.

What's better: MadCatz Authentic Ego ($75) and Nacon Daija ($100) for PC?

I only use arcade sticks on PC. Coming from a Hori Fightstick Alpha that I'm looking to get replaced since the layout cramps my hands. So I need something with a Viewlix layout.

There's this Authentic Ego for $100 I can buy at a local used games store, or a Nacon Daija I can pickup locally from a private seller.

Wondering what the difference would be between the two and if it's worth saving and just getting the Ego or just paying a little more for the Daija. The Daija is for sure used have no clue about the Ego.

EDIT: The store where the EGO is at says they can buy it for $50 or $60 in store credit, which means it'd only be about $15 if I get the ego from there. Going to check out disc replay and see what they say as well but probably going to be around the same.

EDIT 2: I got $76 for the stick at Disc Replay! So I either get the EGO for "free" or I pay $25 more for the Nacon.

Help choosing between IBR, ICR, and PAYE

I'm trying to decide what repayment plan to go on and I have no clue what's the best option. I have about $23K in loans atm. I make $15/hr @ 32h/wk (Idk how much this is a year, maybe $20K) so I can improve my art (plus it's what my degree is in) while being able to pay off my car loan and insurance. I don't have rent as I live with my GF.

The total standard repayment per month is around $250/mo and I can't afford that at all. So I looked into some of the repayment plans and here's what I've got generally.

IBR payment is 0$/mo and the end of the is 2046. My end of payment balance would be $45K. PAYE is also $0/mo, term ends Apr 2046 and EoB would be $48K. I'm not sure how this would be better than IBR. ICR payment is $12/mo with $15K to be paid. Apr 2051 is the end date and EoB would be $38K. I'm leaning to this option because it's still affordable but idk how much my income will change in the future which could make this way more expensive down the road.

So, which should I pick? I'm doing my research but it's all still confusing so hopefully someone here can help out a bit

Right now there's no way for me to afford a standard repayment, so I'm going to have to go with a longer repayment term (even just for the moment) in order to get by. I know with some plans a tax bomb comes with forgiveness, so I'm considering that in my decision but unfortunately I have to consider now more than later in order to scrape by and even make it that far. With ICR I can afford it in theory, but it's a bit more than I really want to commit to put towards my loans every month at the moment. So, I'm leaning towards PAYE or IBR and paying more than the required when I can. Anyone know which would be better?

Should I just get over the skin prices?

As much as I hate how most available skins cost $28 (all seem to be Mythics), and the rotating shop keeps skins of lesser cost / rarity locked behind it..

It is a F2P fighting game. All characters are free. I've probably paid more in SF6 getting new characters and skins. IDK why but it still feels less scummy than 2X even though it may even out to about the same if not more than 2X over time.

Game is very polished but lacking content BESIDES skins. They support tournaments with some skin pools. The community is overall great (surprising coming from League). The Battle Pass is generous enough.

Honestly I wish there was a resource showing every skin organized by rarity / price so I could just.. be on the lookout for the ones I want. But again I don't hop on this game everyday to check and I don't want to. I was planning on holding out on buying skins until I saw either the rotating shop was erased or expanded at least, or overall skin prices dropped $5-8. But all my friends have been saying all the stuff above to why it's so expensive and I'm wondering if I should just get with it.

Smolder is now a permaban for me

I did everything right from min 1. We forced him to walk away from XP lvls 1+2. All in'd him and the supp lvl 3. Their jungler came and I got 3 kills. 3 KILLS LVL 3!!!

We continued to zone them in lane so he has to walk in to farm, he can't freeze well past a certain amount of stacks so I CHECKED IT before walking close to his poppy supp.

I was 10/4. He was 2/4 at 15m, should've been an easy friggin' game!

NOPE! The game lasted for more than 40 minutes, and he scaled, so even though my lane was ahead, and everyone else on my team was even, even pushing to their inhibs, it didn't matter. BCs crit/lethality shaco oneshots everyone on our team and my entire team is arguing with each other. If we just chilled we might've clutched out, but NO.

Even the smolder was complaining about HIS POPPY THROWING, when she was carrying his ass, and that was all that mattered at the end of the day. It feels so shitty to be ahead and it doesn't matter bcs, ggs this mofo got past a certain # of stacks and my team is getting titled. Literally every game with Smolder it's only winnable if he's THAT bad, or if he ints himself and gives the game away.

I'm really not looking forward to queue-ing into Caitlyn again, or Xerath, but at least I can just push wave and not get harassed, with Smolder its GG in Plat no matter how much he's stomped. Just like I hate Yordies, I hate that stupid dragon.

[Discussion] I have no clue what audience my art is for

I desperately want to do commissions, to get my foot in the door of dealing with clients and meeting deadlines. Plus get moolah to do what I love. But I feel that with the art I make, I'm not sure what audience naturally gravitates towards it, or even if I want to cater to any one group.

My ultimate goal is to either be a solo comic artist, possibly crowdfund a story so I don't have to deal with a publisher or anyone's outside control, or work as a penciller/inker in the comics industry. I've noticed I'm ok at penciling, pretty good at inking, and abYSMAL in color (mainly because the result is ok but I have no clue how it gets there sometimes and it bothers me), so I wanted to do away with the last one as an option.

So I thought of just offering pencils and ink commissions for clients. Well, it seems the market skews towards full color being a decent option at a decent price. I almost see no one offering pencils at a decent rate. So I've tried adding color to my recent work and it's going ok.

Yet I still have no clue what to market my work as. Other areas of art that I don't even want to get into (furry + NSFW for ex) are so clear in their niche; within that umbrella you can make anything under the sun. But for the stuff I want to make which are mainly character illustrations, there's too much variance in subject matter to me. I want to draw characters from cartoons, anime, comics, manga, games, etc, but that's not going to really let people know exactly what I'm about if that makes sense.

There are artists who just draw Dragon Ball, or manga style, or mainstream comics, and their paths are clear to me and they seem comfortable within them. I couldn't even wrap around what makes my work my own other than I drew it and I have somewhat of a distinct style.

The main things I want feedback on are if anyone notices a niche I fall into, maybe there's something I'm not thinking of that I can't put the words to. Also what I should value my art at too because I have no clue where to start with pricing. I graduated from art school so I really need to get on paying these loans off haha.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Movink Pad Pro 14 vs iPad vs Alternatives?

My long used iPad has finally crapped the bed after buying it refurbished in 2021. I've used it for everything from drawing comics, to reading comics, books, tv, movies, etc. 95% from making and reading comics though. It was a 2018 iPad Pro 1TB. I bought it refurbished off eBay for around the same price as the Movink 14 today.

So, I'm left with some options:

Either I get another used iPad, I keep all my apps like Procreate and Panels and my accessories. But don't "upgrade" anything (mainly the Procreate layers limit but it didn't affect CSP). Stuck with iOS for however long (I truly hate Apple and iPad but I kept it bcs drawing apps + better stylus and accessories than Samsung). But better long-term support.

I get a purely dedicated device for media (comics + shows) and save up for the Wacom or another alternative to come it into the mix later.

Or I get the Movink Pad Pro 14 for everything. It'll be great for drawing but not on the same level as iPad for everything else. Plus I think it has an SD card slot so I can put all my comics on there. But it also has some quirks with the software, namely I keep seeing no one knowing how long till be supported which is a yikes from me. Also no good accessories it seems (no case + no case with stand is the main thing).

I had a Samsung Tab S7 back in high school, and it was so unreloable I just gave up. I needed to get another stylus after the one it came with broke on me, I was too broke for CSP, not to mention it'd run bad on it, the screen real estate was much less compared to iPad, the latency felt off, etc etc. I don't know if this is every Amdroid tablet experience with a pen or just the age of the sevice, maybe they're way better now.

The iPad has required a lot of accessories to get it running, namely a matte screen protector and Apple pencil tips. In fact just a month ago I bought replacements for those when they ran their course after a year of use. So now I'm left with multiple accessories I'll never use again if I don't get an iPad. Which sucks because I specifically didn't want an Apple device because they trap you in this walled garden, and I may very well be stuck but this is my only device from them so right now might be the chance to break out.

I could also get the 11 just for doing sketches and media instead, and be more disciplined about finishing my work at home, but then I might as well just get a sketchbook.

I want to prioritize the drawing experience over everything, while not sacrificing too much elsewhere. But I also need accessories like at least a case for the Movink.

What should I go for, should I stick with iPad or invest into the Movink 14?

TL;DR: I ask for no lid at the drive thru + keep it chunky so the cookie dough and reese's aren't ruined + little more Blizzard, is this common?

I order at my usual DQ, the same every time, a Cookie Dough Blizzard, XT Cookie Dough, + Reese's.

Half the time they'd flip it and hand it to me. Otherwise times they'd put a lid on it. I eventually saw that they put way less in it if they put the lid on. Maybe this is crazy but I feel like there's a lot more when they put no lid on it, might be placebo but whatever.

I spoke to a manager one time and they said my order is very chunky?? So that's why if they used a lid they'd go up an extra size, to accommodate the space, or put a sundae lid on. But its always a very creamy drink and both the cookie dough and reese's are prominent.

Anyways, I eventually started asking for "no lid" at the drive thru, since I get to my place fast enough to not have anything melt and I love the extra stuff. Now they don't put a lid on and get it right every time.

I went to another DQ closer to my GFs home and did the exact same order, and it was mixed WAY different (the cookie dough instead of big chunks is whittled to bit, I barely taste any reese's) and I was displeased. But I drove off because I'm not sure if this is a common practice that I do, or if I should explain it better so my orders right at the line. Anyone have any advice? In particular any employees that could let me know how it works inside.

I'm conflicted right now and I don't know what exactly I'm asking tbh.

After months of struggling to draw anything and feel good about it, I've reached an epiphany where I just ask myself, "What if Toriyama drew this?" And it just immediately motivates me to get it done. I go from not drawing for weeks to drawing both these Goku drawings start to finish in one night. The WW character sheet in one sitting. The Cloud drawing in half an hour.

But I'm having issues: 1) I like his style but I don't want to be stuck just drawing it. I used to be known in school as just being able to draw DB characters which is cool, but I want to improve and have improved and don't want to move backwards out of marking my own style. 2) This style won't work in American comics publishing which is where I want to at least have the option of ending up in. The stark contrast with no hatching is clear to read on the page but they hire artists who implore more detail. Maybe it's changed, I know Samnee is very clean but he's a legend. Plus I feel it'll interfere with the colorists job.

Idk, maybe I'm overreacting but idk what to think. Should I just draw more and keep seeing where things go? Has anyone else been in the same position? How did you evolve past it??
