Witold Pilecki (1901-1948) was a member of the Polish resistance who volunteered to be the sent to auchswitz to document the conditions of the camp and to create resistance from the inside. He escaped from auchswitz in 1943. Decades after his death he was given the Order of the White Eagle.
The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's highest military honor. The Soviets executed him and tried to erase the legacy of a true hero because he was loyal to the Polish government in exile.
