I'm going to be flying for 30+ hours soon. How do I prevent migraines?

I've never flown internationally, so I'm quite stressed about getting a migraine attack while travelling. It always happens after long drives or just sleep deprivation and the pain gradually creeps on me.

I don't have a prescription for triptans or any preventative meds to bring with me (except maybe nausea meds), so any advice? I'd like to avoid being sick as a dog on the plane and during my connecting flights.

[F4A] looking to get back into my hobby after maaaany years. Need a teacher 💞

Heya, I'm 23F and I used to be super active on amino (back in its golden age) on the roleplay communities. It was genuinely one of my favourite hobbies, but I haven't touched it in probably over a decade.

I need someone willing to help me get back into it with a ton of patience because I've forgotten basically everything. I need a teacher, basically.

My timezone is GMT+2 and I almost always used OCs in the past because I'm not super involved in any particular fandom. I like creating my own worlds and people.

Things I enjoy:

• world-building(!!!!)

• OCs

• historical fantasy

• sword & sorcery

• quest-based storylines

• really, anything magical

I don't do anything romancey. Only hit me up if you're interested in strictly wholesome, friendly fun :)

No one under 18, please. I'm in my 20's and prefer people closer to my own age.

Books that involve the MC being transported into a book or fantasy world

I love this genre and my favourite of the Narnia-type books so far has been The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly (young boy falls through hole in sunken garden in London, enters hellish fairytale world via being spat out by a tree)

I guess it's portal fantasy? It could also be isekai, but isekai often has a very specific video game vibe that I absolutely hate. I don't read manga, comic books or visual novels. Only books, please. Specifically adult or new adult.

Absolutely no litRPG. It's not what I'm looking for.

So, why where you banned from the sub that won't be named?

I was just banned yesterday for disagreeing with someone who said that South Africa is actually a very easy place to live in. I didn't say anything crazy or offensive, just that life is absolutely not easy here and most can't even afford proper housing or food.

Immediately banned.

So, what was everyone else's reason? I wanted to start a little thread and find the silliest one because it's hilarious.

People who 5 star almost every book they read, how??

Very few books are even 4, let alone 5 star reads for me (especially in the romantasy genre), yet I see people quite often who hand out 5 star reviews like candy. I get that reading is a very subjective hobby, but how is a book like ACOTAR (for example) 5 stars? What are you basing your review on? What makes a book a 5 star read for you and how do so many fit that bracket?

I'm quite jealous because it makes me feel like a bitter hag who hates joy.

Anthro animals societies, à la Zootopia

Specifically adult novels. I'm looking for urban environments that mirror our own, but with no humans (or human side characters)

No Watership Down recs. It's not what I'm looking for.

Ballgown for mandatory ball dance scene in my romantasy debut too modest?

The MMC (his name is Magnus Battlecock) and FMC (Faebigail Rotisserie) argue and flirt while dancing at the ball (its enemies to lovers) and this is the dress I've gone with. It's based in mediaeval Europe and everyone is extremely conservative (she's feminist and progressive and the MMC is also) and I was worried this would be TOO conservative and modest for a modern audience??

My second choice was a backless gown with a very low neckline so I can describe her bountiful cleavage.

Does anyone remember these?

Unfortunately every image I found only had a maximum of like 3 pixels.

They were SO good. I used to go insane for slim slabs as a kid and I've been in a slump ever since they were discontinued. I've never found another candy bar like them to fill the hole these left in my soul. I still remember exactly what they taste like and nothing hits the same.

Fantasy horror similar to “Over the Garden Wall”

I'm reading The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly and it somewhat scratches that itch, but I feel like I could find something better.

I like “main character finds themself in whimsical but grimdark land” plots that involve adventure and traversing said land. I'm also reading Between Two Fires and while it is fantasy horror, it's not similar at all to the type of dreamlike atmosphere I want.

OTGW manages to be both cosy and incredibly fucked up, like dark cottagecore. I need something like that.

Heir of Illusion is genuinely the worst book I've read in years

It's taken me almost 3 weeks to get 70% through this book (and I got the audiobook) and it feels even longer than that. This book feels like it's 20,000 pages.

I did everything to ensure I'd enjoy it. I asked people who've read it, checked Goodreads (it has 4.33 stars) and read the synopsis. It sounded great! So I bought it. Are we even reading the same book?

If you intend on reading this book and don't want spoilers, stop here.

The MMC is as interesting as a boiled pair of crocs. Their "love" is just instalust where they constantly want to fuck while having no chemistry. There are no enemies to lovers even though that's what it's advertised as because they immediately want to fuck each other (though this is portrayed as "love") a chapter after meeting.

The first sex scene is so incredibly awkward and comes out of nowhere. They're arguing, they have 0 chemistry so I expect nothing to happen and then he randomly fingerbangs her (after breaking into her home). What the fuck? I went back a few pages because I thought I missed some crucial moment that lead up to this, but no, he just starts fingerfucking her as casually as you'd give someone a high five.

He's also supposedly a super powerful king but acts like a horny fratboy. I hate his character and I genuinely felt a glimmer of joy when I thought that dipshit finally died. How does he even LOSE a fight when touching him kills you? All he has to do is poke you one time and you'll die. How stupid do you have to be to fuck that up? If I were him, I'd just get naked and pinball myself between every enemy.

I'm currently writing this while pissed off because of this book, so I might come off as a little aggressive. I wish the worst upon Ivy and Thorne.

-5/5 stars.

MC is whisked away into a dark, whimsical forest

I'm looking for books that specifically feel like Over the Garden Wall. The MC is preferably from another world and finds themselves in some dark, fucked-up fairytale land. It doesn't have to be a fairytale retelling and I'd actually prefer it if it wasn't. Something like Narnia, but more grimdark and atmospheric.

The closest feeling I've gotten so far is The Book of Lost Things by John Connelly where a 12 year old boy crawls into a hole in his garden and finds himself transported into a mysterious dark fantasy land. I've been recommended Caroline and Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher, but they don't fit the feeling I want.

No litRPG. That's not what I'm looking for.

Books that feel like ”Over the Garden Wall”

I watched this show when I was younger and it's absolutely one of my favourites. I've been chasing that dreamy, soft yet terrifying vibe ever since and I haven't found it.

I tried gothic fantasy romances, like {One Dark Window} and {the knight and the moth}, but none have hit the vibe I want (plus I generally just found them incredibly boring). OTW is dream-like and dark, but also funny and a lot of these books lack humour. I want the feeling of mystery, adventure and the overall soft feeling that the show gives.

I'm VERY flexible when it comes to recommendations. I prefer adult novels and books with a touch of spice, but I can make an exception if the book captures the exact feeling I want. It must be surreal, storybook-like and cosy but uncanny. Anyone who's watched the show (and I highly recommend it) will know exactly what I mean.

Other books I've enjoyed that don't fit this specific vibe:

{Saints of Steel} {Villains and Virtues} {Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb} {Uprooted by Naomi Novik}

Have you ever read something so good it's ruined all other books of that genre for you?

I'm looking to expand my already horrifically long TBR and about 80% of the romantasy I read is pretty disappointing.

Am I blonde? I've been told my hair is brown my entire life.

They just put "blonde" on my ID and it really threw me off. I've been calling myself a brunette my whole life. I'm on the left, I have someone with darker hair on the right for comparison.

I'm dying for a good pirate MMC

I'm reading {the liveship traders} and I NEED a good pirate MMC because I absolutely love Kennit. A lot just aren't scratching that itch.

I have {the ever king} on my TBR, but reviews seem... mixed. From what I did read, the quality wasn't on par with Robin Hobb (though she does set the bar quite high). All I want is a good story with hot pirates, but a lot don't hit the "good story" part.

My likes and dislikes:

- romance subplots

- slow-burn

- 3 chillies minimum

- actual world-building

- no instalust/love

- no YA

Genuinely horrifying monster MMCs needed

If anyone's ever seen grimtonik's (posted above) art, I'm talking about that level of monster fuckery. Multiple arms, multiple eyes (if any), just fucked up and disfigured.

I don't really enjoy smut (mostly because it's horribly written), I just like attractive monstrosities. I actually prefer stuff on the tamer side. Good monster MMCs are hard to find, so I'm keeping my mind very open here. I am still open to spice, however.

Books I absolutely hated and will not read anything adjacent to are {ice planet barbarians} and {voidwalker by S.A. MacLean}. Otherwise I'll read just about anything as long as it's actually well-written with a good plot and likeable characters, of which those are not. The MMCs were also way too human for my liking.

Aliens, biblically accurate angels, vaguely humanoid amorphous shapes, I'll take it all.

Fantastic books with absolutely dreadful covers

I started {burn for me by Ilona Andrews} recently and I'm enjoying it, but I remember putting it off forever because of how goddamn hideous the covers are. It looks like cheap porn when the books themselves aren't even smutty.

Are there any other great books I might be missing out on purely because the cover is atrocious? I have {land of the beautiful dead} on my TBR and that cover is equally dreadful.

Adorkable, golden retriever MMCs

I'm almost done with Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and it made me realise I'd kill for a love interest like Ryland Grace. I get he's not for everyone and some find the "I did a thing!" humour a little cringe, but I absolutely love dorky yet competent MMCs. Even better if he's capable of being a badass from time to time.

Some spice is a must, but no insta love/lust. I've already read almost all of T. Kingfisher's romance novels, so none of her (as much as I love the awkward paladins.)

Adventurey westerns

I watched Spirit recently and it got me in the mood for a western romance. I've never actually read one before, so whatever I read will be my first impression of the genre.

My only experience with westerns are Spirit and RDR2, but I love the cosy vibe of Spirit more (and the colonel because hnnhhhggg).

A bit of spice is a must (three chillies at a minimum), but I also enjoy relationships that are built on feelings rather than insta lust. Romance also doesn't have to be a forefront. Sometimes I like plot heavy books with a romance subplot more!

No YA, please.

What's the biggest tell that makes you say "this is definitely the love interest"?

For me, it's always the one whose height and cheekbones are described first. If another male character is described like this but he has hair that's any colour other than black, 9 outta 10 times it's a bait and switch.
