How do I calculate the size generator I need?

3 days without power in a heatwave - I’m finally pulling the trigger and getting a generator. I’ve had it.

Price is paramount - I’m not interested in one of those expensive “standby” generators. Portable is absolutely fine.

I’m hoping to get a portable generator that can tap into my giant buried propane tank used to heat the house.

Thing is- I don’t know how to calculate the size generator I need. It’s a 2400 sq ft house. I’d want to power the whole house including heat / ac, and water (i have a well / pump).

How do I calculate what I need?

Edit: wow, this is an awesome community. Thank you to everyone that’s replied so far. I’m working a double today - tomorrow night I’m going to reply to some comments with specifics as to what’s in my house that needs powering

WSIB: Gunfire Reborn or Far Far West

Looking for something fun I can dip in and out of. I'm looking for 20m play sessions, something with a sense of progression. I had a great time with Risk of Rain 2 for this reason, just not sure if I'm misunderstanding these two games.

It isn't mandatory but but if the game is suitable for kids it'd be a bonus- I game with my 10yo and 13yo. They're pretty decent and can catch on to a lot of games, right now we're playing Overwatch.

Is my shower door's integrity poor, or is this normal? (pictures inside)

We had a bit of a disaster with our standing shower- a crack in the tile led to water coming through the ceiling below us. It was caulked, but we also had a second opinion and those people blamed the shower door. Those people caulked the weep holes in the shower door and recommended a brand new door- however, I'm skeptical. It just doesn't make sense that the door could have cause such a massive leak.

I'm paranoid about a recurrence, so I did a test- I put a length of toilet paper on the ledge just outside the shower door. I closed the door, went inside, and ran the water. As you can see in the below pic, the toilet paper did get some splashes. I have no idea if this is normal or not, I'm hoping someone can tell me. (I showered like I normally would for around 10-15 minutes)

Is this a visual glitch or is moonlight supposed to make things look like this? Seems odd and doesn't look good.

New OLED monitor displaying green and white pixels inside blacks- but these pixels move with the image so they're not dead or stuck (video inside)

My brand new LG GX9 5k2k monitor all of a sudden started displaying these weird green, red, white pixels inside of blacks- what was weird is that the pixels would move with the image when I scrolled.

I toggled HDR off then on, and it went away (at leaser for now)- but I think I found the actual culprit - please concur or tell me I'm wrong:

I have two displays. A 4k TV and this 5k2k 165hz. I swap between profiles using a hotkey in DisplayFusion. My old monitor (and old profile) was 3440x1440 @ 240hz. I totally forgot to delete that profile and create a new one when I installed this 5k2k @ 165hz monitor. SO, when I swapped back to this display it was actually in 3440x1440 (and probably trying to achieve 240hz if that's possible?), thus causing those weird artifacts / pixels,.

I have a video of the issue here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1ujs8fo/what_the_hell_is_this_green_pixels_in_black_that/

Please let me know if you think I'm right or wrong. I have a tight return window on this monitor, so if it's the monitor that's defective I need to know.

What the hell is this? (Green squares in the black that move with the image)

I turned off HDR in windows and it went away. I turned it back on and it’s still good. Is my monitor defective???

If you have the GPU and the funds, 39" 5k2k truly is *perfection*

My nephew scratched my 34" MSI ultrawide so I had to cop a new monitor. I'm running a 5090 in this rig, and I was gaming 3440x1440, so I figured it was time to bump it up to 5k.

I found an open-box deal on the LG 39" GX9 5k2k monitor. I was a little apprehensive because I hadn't been able to see a real-world demo of this size, and even with an open box it was PRICEY.

Well, I can say that sitting a little over 2 feet away from the screen (IKEA Karlby desk... I know, I'm very original), this thing is absolute perfection. The leap in quality and immersiveness (is that a word) was totally unexpected. I knew it was going to be an improvement, but... damn. This feels like a bigger jump than 1080p to 1440p.

(And yes, I know Alienware is releasing their glossy 5k2k soon- I like Matte for my brightly lit office. I'm sorry.)

If you're on the fence but can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend this size / resolution ultrawide.

Just got an open box deal from Best Buy- what sorts of tests should I do?

39" 5k2k LG OLED - open box/excellent. What sorts of tests / things to look for to make sure there's nothing defective or wrong? All advice welcome.

How's Thermaltake's RMA process? Is it quick? My 10-month-old PSU died :(

Initiated an RMA today. This is the first time my life (25 years of PC building) that I've ever had a PSU die on me. Gold-rated 1200w, too.

How is Thermaltake with RMA? Was the process quick to replace the part? I JUST got an open box monitor from Best Buy and I only have a 2-week window to return it, and now I don't really have the ability to properly test it.

WSIB: Aliens Dark Descent or Wartales

I’m a big fan of tactical games, loved Battle Brothers, XCOM 2, and that Gears of War strategy game.

I’ve heard some mixed things about Wartales, but I’ve also heard it closely compared to Battle Brothers- which I loved.

Both are on sale and close in price. Not sure which would be the better buy.

any advice is appreciated

This sub is obsessed with glossy. It’s not the best option in every scenario.

This keeps coming up in every post about the LG 39” 5k2k: “Wait for the Alienware. It’s glossy.”

I don’t get the obsession with glossy. Some of us game during the day in well-lit rooms. I’d be staring at a literal mirror. I’m not closing blackout curtains to play a game- that makes me feel like shit.

There is still a conversation to be had surrounding glossy vs matte.

Anyone agree?

Is there a good iOS app to use as a remote for the LG C4?

There are a lot on the App Store. The only functionality I really need is power on and switch HDMI inputs

How’d I do?

I was torn between this and the upcoming Alienware- but due to two big windows *behind* me in my office, I think matte is the play. How’d I do here?

u/phiveoh23 — 13 days ago

I have two big windows directly behind me in my well-lit office. Glossy or matte?

Debating buying the 39" 5k2k LG (matte) or waiting for the Alienware variant (glossy).

Everyone says glossy looks better, but matte is better in well-lit rooms and less glare.

Help!
