Road's in good shape, washout @ mile 9 is a bit rough but nothing a car with 6"+ of clearance can't handle, all/4 wheel drive not necessary. Had the top of Excelsior to myself, sans a ravens who buzzed me close enough I could see its eyes. Berries abundant and ripe for eating
No not bikes. Only bikes
PSA: Noisy Waters is this weekend, yo
I've found myself with some time off around Labor Day weekend and I'm looking at trying to snag a backcountry camping permit for the Copper Ridge area. I know it's a popular area, esp. at this time of the year, but I'm trying to wrap my head around how the permit system works - I haven't tried to get one since the reservation system went into effect.
My understanding is that 60% of the permits are issued via reservations, while 40% are held for walk-ups. So if a site is showing up on Recreation.gov as "This walk-up site can only be reserved through a permit issuing station, the day of or day before" does that mean they've hit their cap on reservable spots / permits for that date and the remaining quota are available by walk-up only? Or is the site fully occupied?
And how does walking-up even work? Do I have to go to the WIC in Marblemount or can I do it via the combined office in Glacier? The details for the Glacier office state, "Permits for backcountry camps and cross-country zones accessed along the Mt. Baker Highway can be picked up in person on Thursdays and Fridays only, between June 25 and September 25, at the Glacier Public Service Center."
Long-time PNW day hiker trying to get back into backpacking while my body still can...
I, behind the wheel of my black Subaru, somehow, instinctually knew to slow down as I approached you, operating a red Subaru w/ BC plates, on northbound I-5 this morning. You, without signaling, merged effortlessly into my lane to pass a vehicle already doing 5 over in the right lane as we rounded the corner beneath the overpasses to BLI.
You had gorgeous, golden hair flowing down as far as I could see - or maybe that was your dog in the backseat - it was early and I was enjoying my coffee while listening to Brad & John blab on about something instead of playing one of the two dozen tracks they have on repeat.
I think we have a real, potentially telepathic connection. Would love to get to know you and take you out to a classic rock & gem show sometime...

Cross them fingers (so we can still cross our tips)
It was a blast partying in the streets with y'all!
Worth the ticket fee alone just to have a sane, subdued Trackside experience. Extra worth it to watch my neighbor slam dance in wingtip shoes & a suit vest - didn't expect that!

I live in the 98226 zip code and have dealt with a handful of issues related to getting mail in a timely fashion as well as having mail collected. Well, now it's interfering with my ability to vote.
I completed my primary ballot on Fri. evening and placed it in my mailbox with the flag up on Sat. morning while heading out to run errands. When I returned home, the flag had been lowered. Today I was sent an informed delivery notice of some incoming junk mail (ironically, an ad for stamps from the USPS) - upon arriving home after work I checked my mailbox and to my surprise, my ballot was still in the box.
I attempted to contact the Post Office serving my ZIP code but, as expected, nobody answered their perpetually ringing phone. So I contacted the County Auditor's office but just missed their business hours and left a detailed message.
The bottom line is, if you want your vote to be counted, DO NOT TRUST THE POSTAL SERVICE TO HANDLE IT FOR YOU. Use one of the numerous ballot drop boxes available throughout the county - the USPS should be relied on only if absolutely necessary.
EDIT: The county Auditor got back to me and said, effectively, don't trust the USPS with anything important, esp. your ballot. They'd make a note of this and follow up if they receive more reports. So if my ballot's still in the mailbox when I get home (it is a locked mailbox but they definitely have the key), I'll be taking it to the drop box tomorrow.
What's the difference between beer nuts & deer nuts? One's $1.69 and the other's under a buck 😅
Unrelated: can we stop gabbing so much at concerts? I know it's the beer garden and you had an eventful day but some of us prefer the music to your drama. TIA!
The summer heat hits harder east of I-5
It was a nice summer while it lasted...
Enjoyed my time at the punk fest this weekend. It's been a long time since I've even seen a mosh pit, much less been in one.
