I thought thumbnail rendering would be the easiest part when I was building my project, but then I realized that getting it right takes a lot of unnecessary time and effort. It could be extra useful for quickly drafting inventory, guidebook, quest book, and achievements-type stuff.

This repo is the 5th open source contribution out of my game. The previous four were:

Drop-in runtime sprite-atlas baker for Unity 6 / URP. Take any 3D animated character and bake every clip × frame into a single packed atlas at game start — orthographic capture, async GPU readback, multi-row animation, blend-shape variants, all behind a 3-line API. Then play the atlas back as a flat textured quad that shares one material across every instance. Open-sourced as part of a small giving-back set of Unity tools — alongside the UI Toolkit design system, the mesh-fracture pipeline, and the cross-platform build orchestrator.

Repo | Live Demo (WebGL)

Drop-in Voronoi mesh fracturing for Unity URP. Pure C#, no native plugin to wrestle with. Fragments come out watertight, with the exterior and cap split into separate submeshes so the inside can wear its own material. Optional Unity physics for bouncy debris, plus an alpha-fade dissolve for clean exits. The expensive bit is the Voronoi solve itself, and it runs at load time with the convex hulls cooked alongside, so the impact frame stays cheap.

Open-sourced as part of a small giving-back set of Unity tools, sitting next to the UI Toolkit design system and the cross-platform build orchestrator.

Some important future development decisions to make after passing 300 clones and 130 stars on GitHub:

Do we want a "shadcn" for Unity or leave it as is? Where you'd download the components you'd use one by one or in bulk via the editor/CLI tool I'll provide in the main repo. This could lead to more specialized and community-contributed components in the long run. We could extend this to support templates (inventory, minimap, quest log, kind of UI compositions).

I started working on open sourcing three more features from my Jump’n Bump + Rocket League inspired game. Which one of the following would you want first?

  1. Runtime mesh fraction (destructibles system I use for characters)
  2. Runtime sprite generation (needed for low end mobile devices to avoid expensive meshes)
  3. Runtime thumbnail generation (some mobile optimized thumbnail gen library out of prefabs)

As a parent of two, strict child safety mod was my proprity without nerfing game fun. All “kill” wording and gore elements gets replaced with child safe alternatives even though everybody enjoys the same match online.

Voice chat is enabled for grown ups while it is strictly forbidden for kids.
