When Defeat Is Inevitable

One of my favorite works this year.

The client wanted to immortalize the final moments of their D&D party. Defeat was inevitable, so the group made one last, completely ineffective act of defiance against the lich that had beaten them.

Sometimes the best stories don't come from victory.

[Art] The Lucky Donkey Inn

The Lucky Donkey Inn

A tavern run by a retired sorcerer and his old adventuring party. Works as a roleplay hub or a full encounter map if things go sideways.

Hidden basement under the kitchen. Secret chimney passage to the sorcerer’s quarters. Unusual guardians.

Lucky Donkey Inn

Just finished this tavern map for fantasy RPGs!

The Lucky Donkey Inn was designed primarily for roleplay-focused sessions, giving players plenty of space to interact with NPCs, gather rumors, negotiate jobs, or simply enjoy a few drinks after an adventure.

That said, the map can easily turn into a chaotic battlemap if a bar fight breaks out. Tables become cover, bottles become improvised weapons, and suddenly the entire tavern is part of the encounter.

For groups that enjoy stealth gameplay, there's also an alternative approach: sneaking into the Master's Room by climbing through the kitchen chimney instead of using the main stairs.

Beneath the inn, a hidden underground room offers opportunities for secret meetings, smuggling operations, criminal dealings, or whatever mysteries your campaign may need.

How would your players use this tavern?

Map by me. Feedback is always welcome!
