
Before You Believe the Hype, Here's What the Research Actually Says About NAD⁺ and Aging

There’s a statement you see constantly in longevity discussions:
“NAD⁺ declines with age.”
But how strong is the evidence behind that statement?
I came across a critical review that specifically examined this question:

The authors looked at studies examining NAD⁺ levels across different species and tissues, including humans.
What caught my attention was the difference between how confidently the idea is often presented online and how limited the underlying evidence can be.
The review points out that:
• Studies have examined different tissues and species rather than one consistent biological system.
• Results aren't always consistent between tissues.
• Human data are particularly limited.
• Some studies involve relatively small numbers of participants.
• Much more research is needed to understand how NAD⁺ levels change across different tissues throughout aging.
So the interesting question isn't necessarily:
“Does NAD⁺ decline with age yes or no?”
It may be:
“Where does NAD⁺ change with age, by how much, in whom, and under what conditions?”
That distinction seems important.
It also makes me wonder how much of the current NAD⁺ conversation is based on evidence from specific tissues or animal models versus what we actually know about normal human aging.
