Gummo Record & Laserdisc finally side by side

Gummo Record & Laserdisc finally side by side

Very happy day today! Got my copy of the vinyl soundtrack in the mail, which I’ve been after for a long time and got for a great price. It pairs so beautifully with my Laserdisc, which I got a couple of months ago (again at a great price) and has always been an absolute grail for me. I love how these two look together. Can barely tell them apart!!! Veeeeeeery happy

Anyone else shocked that these modern headlights are legal?

I'm genuinely so sick of car headlights now. Why are they SO BRIGHT??? I understand that LED headlights are brighter, but this is getting ridiculous.
I am regularly dazzled by cars every single time I drive at night now. It's usually cars with a '26 registration. I can't count how many times I've had my vision genuinely impaired (akin to looking at a flashlight close-up) by these ridiculous cars. Not to mention the way they flash because of the slightest bump, making you think they're trying to communicate with you about something. All the time l'm thinking that these drivers just constantly have their high-beams on, but no! That's actually the normal setting!!! Are you insane? HOW IS THIS LEGAL???
Dear EVERYONE who has a car with these types of headlights: If your headlights need to be that bright for you to drive, you SHOULD NOT be driving!!!!!

Finally watched Getting Lost

Edit: this post is about the documentary called ‘Getting Lost’ and is not about the show itself!

Finally got round to watching it since I didn’t when it came out, and honestly I thought it was pretty terrible. What is the general consensus on it? Don’t get me wrong I can clearly see that there was a lot of love behind it, but I found myself and my girlfriend just constantly saying “who the FUCK is this random guy!!!!!!”. Like, you’ve literally got half the cast, and you’re devoting 2/3 of the screen time just for some random guy to tell you about how he loves the show. Like, as much as I appreciate and relate to being a fan of the show, I do not need a documentary about random fans of the show. A little bit is fair enough, since the fandom is such a huge part of the show, especially with the fans who actually contributed a lot, but most of the documentary is just random people talking about their love for the show. Like, that’s nice, but I honestly couldn’t give a fuck. That’s what the Internet is for. This is a documentary about Lost and there’s no new insight or information, and most of the cast members barely get screen time just so we can get another segment of some millennial talking about how they went to Hawaii. I respected the emotional parts, but also where was the dedication to, for example, Mira Furlan? Honestly some of it felt a bit disrespectful to the show, despite the clear love from the people who made it. Such a huge wasted opportunity and I kind of wish I didn’t watch it. There were things to enjoy about it, but I felt it was mostly just a wank-off of people who enjoyed the show and their mates.

Double-Laser Player

I wonder why there was never a player made (to my knowledge) that had two lasers built into it. As in, one for Side A and one for Side B. I assume the reason would’ve been that it’s too expensive. And of course I’m sure that if the format stuck around and was more popular, they would’ve made something like that eventually. But I am surprised it didn’t manifest in any form, especially seeing how they did make players like the LD-W1 which are so complicated and expensive. The laser-flip mechanisms are great but they certainly leave a lot to go wrong, so it would’ve been cool to have a double-laser player that could’ve had a much quicker side-flip. Does anyone know if this type of thing was properly considered?

Another rewatch done

** **Every time I rewatch the show I feel like I should write another massive essay on everything it means to me. Maybe I will again some time but I think it’s clear to me know that everyone who gets it knows it. I think this is my 8th rewatch, I’ve lost count (pun!) since I watched it as a kid a good few times but I have no way of knowing exactly. This show has been such a huge part of my entire life. In fact, my due date for being born was 22/04/2004! I ended up being born 4 days before, but even that is relevant in that it’s the first number in the sequence! I just feel like the show is so deeply apart of me at this point that I struggle to put it into words. It’s such a specific set of so many feelings and comforts that I get, every single time. Whenever I rewatch the show on my box set, I always watch all of the Bonus Features as well. The show and story itself have endless meaning for me, but it’s so much more enhanced seeing the sheer love and care put in by all the people who worked on it. There are so few pieces of film or TV that have so much dedication and genuine love behind its creation from people involved in every manner. I know it’s always said, but Lost is just so special. I can’t explain how deeply spiritual and meaningful it is to me. It is the only TV show that can create such a powerful image of life, death, pain, love, mystery, mythology, and so much more. I just cannot believe that this show got made. I really would not be who I am without it. This rewatch, I finally got to watch it with my partner. I’ve been wanting to share Lost with someone since I was little, and so seeing that she loved the show made me feel so happy. Indeed, on this rewatch, I’ve found myself accepting far more personal criticisms of the show! And yet, I love it more than ever. Every single rewatch shows me a new manner of enjoying the show, and I still pick up on new things and realise things in a new way. I think for a while, when I was younger, I tried to see the show as being totally perfect. Of course, the show does have a lot of issues! But the strengths of the show are just so vast and unbelievably moving, that it feels perfect. Not flawless or without issue, but perfect in the sense that it creates a perfect feeling within me, moreso than ever. For my next rewatch I might even try Lost Circle to see the show from a whole new angle. It might be a while before I rewatch the show as well. I’ve been watching it yearly for a good bit now, and I think I might let myself miss it and long for it for just a year or two. Because that feeling of coming back to it (which I’ve had before after big gaps) is just something I can’t explain. I cannot wait to come back to the show and experience it all again. It means more and more to me every time, and I feel such a huge and deep connection to it as a person on such an increasing basis. This show is perfect in how it makes me feel. It will always be apart of me, and it looks like I just couldn’t help writing an essay about it! Whether I put it into words or not, the people who know it get it, and that’s as simple as that. It’s not just me who has this connection to the show, I am not special of it. Countless people feel this show on the same level I do, and that enhances it so much more. The fact that other people out there feel this way about it is in itself so special, and it makes me feel so comforted. I love Lost, and I know you do too.

Maternity Matters

Noticed this on the Season 6 Bonus Feature ‘See You in Another Life, Brotha’ they labeled this scene from 2x15 ‘Maternity Leave’ as ‘Maternity Matters’. Possibly one of the most boring things I could’ve picked up on, but maybe that was the original name of the episode. The more you know I suppose

Where can I find a 3x2 Kallax?

I am looking to find a 3x2 Kallax shelving unit where there is a long beam running across the middle. This is opposed to a 2x3 unit where it’s designed to be 2 cubes wide and 3 cubes tall. I currently own the latter, and use it stored on its side (2 cubes high, 3 wide) for heavy record storage. I realised this isn’t such a good idea, since the upper cubes full of records are quite unstable. And so I want to get a dedicated 3x2 unit where the shelving divider is designed to hold more weight. However I can’t find the proper one on Ikea’s website; I am only able to find the 2x3 and not the 3x2.

CLD-D925 loud ticking noises

Most times when I play a disc on my CLD-D925, it makes this loud and fast ticking noise, quite high-pitched. I’m guessing something is a little loose but im not sure what it could be. Whenever I’ve opened up the player I can’t see what’s causing the noise. It’s not unbearable especially because I mostly use headphones, but if it’s indicative of a bigger problem I’d like to fix it. Is this a common thing? I should add that this player was stored in a loft for nearly 20 years and does work really really well, but obviously I need to get it serviced. I just want to see if this little problem can be fixed before I invest in shipping it to get serviced and cleaned.

Backwards Dharma ‘R’

I’ve always seen this version of the Dharma logo around. Is it fan-made? I wonder why the R is backwards. I’m not sure if it’s meant to be canonical or significant or anything. I really love all of the alternate Dharma logos

What if the show did continue?

I’ve been wondering about what might have happened if the writers never got the end date of 6 seasons. Without a doubt, the writers getting the end date agreement with ABC back in S3 was one of the best things to happen to the show. You can feel so clearly that, after S3, the writers really felt comfortable to shift everything into the next gear and get the story MOVING. I’ve always loved the change of pace of the latter 3 seasons, and I think it pairs wonderfully with the slower and somewhat quieter (at times) pace of the first 3. What I wonder is, what the hell would have happened if they never got the end date? ABC obviously believed that to end a successful show is a bad idea (such a strange attitude, TV Networks are insane sometimes), so who knows how long it could’ve gone on for? I imagine that Lindelof and Cuse would have left at some point. I imagine it would’ve been a hard decision to abandon the show into monotony until audiences stop caring and ABC cancel it, especially for Lindelof, but I don’t think many of the writers would have been able to stomach letting the show get to a constant ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ level of quality. I think the show would have had new writers come in by the 4th or 5th season (which would likely be longer, although it’s interesting to consider how the writer’s strike would have affected this different version of the show) and it could’ve continued to 8, or maybe 10 or more seasons. I doubt the show would have ended up exploring what we get in S4-6, or at least certainly not in the very thought-out way that Damon and Carlton and the rest of the writing team presented. Personally, I imagine some terrible scenario where Lost would have continued with these new writers, and they probably would have done something like introduce a new plane with new survivors, and have token original characters return. And there would have been more hatches, more Others, etc.
I’m curious to know what other people think would have happened if the writers never got that end date. I’m so grateful that the writers got the chance to end the show in a reasonable time frame, because it gave them the opportunity to properly formulate and have an aim with the story. I think they did such a great job with what they had, especially considering they only wanted 3 seasons originally anyway. I think the show turned out as amazingly as it could have, but it’s definitely fun to imagine what could have happened if things weren’t so lucky, and the terrible grips of TV Network suits had their way!

No tapes in the Swan

One thing I noticed recently is that there’s no tape player in the Swan. Locke mentions it when he’s talking about the Pearl Orientation tape and says there’s no way to play it down in the Swan; instead they have a film projector. I have no idea if it was intentional, but I think it’s incredible attention to detail since the high magnetism of the Swan’s energy pocket would interfere with magnetic tape, and so they cant have that format down there. Again, not sure if that was intentional, but it works really well!

Lost Explained Easter Egg

Could anyone DM me to help out with the Easter Egg for the Lost Explained channel? I have found the clue, but I am stumped on how to find the actual link to the secret video. Of course I won’t spoil the clue itself! But if anyone could message me and tell me where the actual link is I’d be very grateful.

Purple bars on CLD-D925

I made a post about this on Facebook but thought I’d ask here as well. On my CLD-D925 I’ve noticed purple bars that are visible going across the screen during very yellow scenes. I’ve seen it on CLV and CAV discs all NTSC. I’ve tested the discs on my DVL-919 and there was no issue at all, so I can rule out crosstalk being caused by disc warpage or anything like that. I was using SCART on my D925, and when I switched to standard RCA Composite, the problem was less pronounced but still there.
Is this an issue with my player? I don’t find it too bothersome and I can certainly live with it, but if it’s a bad idea to keep using the player then I’d like to be sure. Is it something that’s fixable?

Who else is desperate for orange street lights?

The ‘new’ white LED lights are actually so depressing and assaulting. Just now, I drove through a small stretch of a dual-carriageway that was all still lit with orange/amber lights. It was actually such an amazing feeling. Without being melodramatic, it was such a relieving and nostalgic feeling. And then boom, back to the horrible and blinding white lights. I love driving at night, and I would give so much just to be able to drive around with those orange lights. It’s so much more soothing on the eyes and makes driving actually pleasurable (god forbid!). I understand the argument that orange lights might make drivers more tired, but I would pushback in that the white LED lights causes more assault on the eyes and can lead to strain. I also understand that LED lights are more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly, but to be honest there’s no reason why they couldn’t just be coloured orange. Then you get the best of both worlds. Obviously councils would never bother doing that, but really I think it would be a net benefit for drivers and costs and the environment. I mean, who actually wants the white LED lights? Honestly, I think it affects life more than you’d think. Who else agrees? Does anyone think that white LED lights are actually beneficial?

Is anyone else finding it’s getting worse to be vegan?

Note: this is not an ‘I’m considering quitting veganism’ post at all. I’m just asking if it’s a widespread thing in noticing that vegan products are getting so much worse/fewer. I go to my local Tesco and there is genuinely fuck all. I can’t get actual meals there anymore because I can’t live off of Plant-chef burgers and Vivera Salmon. Sure, there’s a couple products that are good, but I want to actually enjoy eating. They don’t even sell any Tofoo products (except their Tempeh) anymore. Remember a year or two ago when there used to be a plethora of vegan pizzas? (Multiple Chicago Town options, Zizi, Meatless Farm, even Tesco’s own). I guess that’s just a thing of the past now. Remember when Birdseye did those amazing chicken and fish replacements? Yeah forget about it!
Like, what is going on? I get my food off Ocado which is pretty decent, but even then I’m legit cycling between maybe 4 or 5 meals. I appreciate that I should be experimenting more and cooking from scratch, and I try to fairly often, but it’s surely ridiculous how much vegan products have declined. Why is it getting worse? And not better? Maybe I’m missing something and looking in the wrong places. It’s just really depressing how much harder it’s getting to find some actually good food. I’ll never quit, obviously, but this has been making me a bit miserable at times.

Safe storage angle?

Is storing my LDs at this angle safe? The ones furthest to the left are more near-vertical, and the ones on the right are slightly leaning. I don’t know if this risks warping or anything, but I’m not sure what I could use to keep them dead-straight

Look at that!

I always see this hilarious YouTube short pop up whenever I type in something about Lost. The guy calls Lost a ‘garbage show’ because they ‘couldn’t solve what they set up’ and in the same breath admits that he hasn’t actually seen the entire show. These bullshit podcaster loser guys always make me laugh. Everything they say is just pure shite with absolutely no basis. It always makes me happy seeing people call out his bullshit in the comments and…. would you look at that! Look at the number of comments! Maybe I shouldn’t mistake coincidence for fate…..

DVD Variants

Is anyone else really obsessed with the packaging of the DVDs of Lost? Particularly the more obscure and strange variants.
I’m really quite nostalgic for the standard DVD sets; in particular the ones where each disc came in its own little separate case, all in a cardboard slipcase for the whole season. I remember having them around the house as a kid and just being fascinated by them. All of the strange graphics and designs. I always felt a weird fascination with, for example, the silver background of the Season 1 (or ‘Series’ as it’s called on the sets here in the UK) which is the plane’s metal, I suppose. Or the deep blue of the Season 4 set.
I really found it quite a shame whenever the blu-ray sets would just be a standard case with multiple disc-holders. BORING! I love how excessive the DVD sets were in having each disc in its own case.
I am a very proud owner of the Complete Collection Box set, and I have been for years now, but I’m gonna pick up those standard DVD sets for nostalgia.
Does anyone else have this weird fascination? I love interesting packaging for all films and TV, but for some reason with Lost, I always found it so fascinating. You can find all sorts of obscure variants of DVD releases that don’t quite make sense. I remember seeing a strange set for Season 5 that had Jack, John, and Mr. Eko on the cover online somewhere, but I can’t seem to find it. Such a strange choice from whoever designed that. Lost seems to have a large amount of strange and odd physical releases, particularly on DVD (the Blu-Rays tended to be a bit more well-ordered).
There’s loads of fun ones I’ve found online, I’ll try and post them.
Does anyone else have this fascination? What are your favourite physical releases of Lost that just don’t quite make sense?

Graduation ceremony anxiety

Graduating next week! Decently excited, but what I’m really not excited for is the sitting around and waiting before the actual walk-across-the-stage. I know there’s lots of speeches and all that stuff, and I’m anxious about it. I don’t care at all about the walking across the stage or whatever. In fact, that’s all I want to do! I wish I could just show up, walk across the stage, and get my photos after and say hi to my lecturers and classmates, and leave! The sitting around in the ceremony hall and listening to all this and that, is a bit dreadful to me. I’m just asking how optional this whole thing is? I obviously don’t intend to show up late and only be there for my stage-bit, but I just need some sort of reassurance that, if in the worst case scenario I have some sort of panic attack or something like that, I can be outside of the ceremony hall-space during the waiting and stuff before I walk across the stage. It’s just about knowing and being reassured that it’s not detrimental if I simply can’t handle that waiting around (I know it sounds stupid, but it’s a sort of claustrophobia and trapped feeling). I know it varies from uni to uni, but has anyone else had experience with this?

URGENT: What are these bugs?

I’m based in the UK, and since last night I have been seeing these little things everywhere. They are absolutely tiny and don’t bite or anything. They just move around and sometimes fly a little bit. I have no idea what they are but I must have picked them up from being outside in fields yesterday. I am really worried about them finding their way into precious items like books and records and such. What are they? Do they last long? Do they spread badly? I don’t know if the photo helps because they are so tiny, like smaller than half a grain of rice. I have killed a lot of them by now
