Huawei has unveiled this new non-folding, 16:9.5 format today—I love it.

Huawei has just unveiled the future of the mobile format.

It’s not foldable, which I think is a smart move (fewer screen issues in the long run). It’s the same width as the new Fold 8 (very comfortable to hold) and compact. This form factor has really caught my attention.

Is the Neo's screen size sufficient?

I'm thinking of buying it just for web browsing and leisure while on the couch with something playing in the background; the AI tells me I'll go blind with a 13-inch screen—what has your experience been like?

Why are Google Pixel phones causing a sensation in Japan?

I’m noticing that they’re generating a buzz similar to the early iPhones, with people lining up to buy them.

From what I gather, they aren't particularly powerful smartphones; the Tensor chip is notably poor in terms of battery life and performance (terrible for emulation, for instance). They do take great photos, but what is it about this phone that really appeals to the Japanese?

First 3 days with the Fold 8: impressions of a normal user (I come from iOS).

  • The design is beautiful, no doubt about it, it's a great addition to the foldable phone world.
  • The design makes you use the external screen MUCH more than the internal one, at least in my case, only for medium-to-long sessions. It wouldn't be surprising if, in the future, they make non-foldable phones with this external screen format. It's true that after using it, you go back to a regular phone and it feels incredibly elongated. BEWARE that this could be a problem; I'll explain it further below.
  • The battery life is quite good; it's still settling in, but I hope it will improve.
  • This phone does run a bit warm. I know there are still updates to come and that the SP5 Elite is quite new, but the heat is especially noticeable when you open the camera or use certain demanding apps. It's not a huge problem, though, especially considering it's summer and the average temperature is 35-40 degrees Celsius.
  • The main problem I see is the social media content on the external screen: it's not that it looks small, but Instagram Reels and TikToks look quite odd with the horizontal bars; my head is still adjusting. Obviously, most social media content is vertical, and the apps aren't optimized yet (special mention to the disaster that is Instagram on Android—it's appalling), but it's a bit of a hassle to scroll through the Instagram feed to see photos and have to resize them to view them completely. Some apps aren't even optimized for the internal screen (Pinterest). Everything here could be much better, but it's much better in my opinion than the narrowness of the Fold Ultra, for example, but you have to be prepared for that. Some say the solution is to tweak the font size and resolution to zoom out and shrink the screen, but I'm not going to enjoy the phone with a magnifying glass anyway.
  • Regarding the internal screen, nothing to say, it's wonderful. Like any foldable phone, the crease will be noticeable against the light depending on the angle, but if you're looking at the screen head-on, it's imperceptible. What I find odd is that when you open it, the hinge doesn't fully extend and the screen doesn't lie completely flat, but rather leaves a sort of mini V-shaped angle (this happens with other Folds as well), but it's not a major issue; ultimately, it's designed this way for durability and resistance.
  • Regarding One UI, there's not much to say; they've really pushed it hard these past few months. Gemini Intelligence and all the AI features on the phone are a real treat compared to Apple.

I hope Ferrán comes, and I hope he succeeds.

I’d take one Ferran Torres over a thousand Julian Alvarez who don’t want to be at this club.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs. iPhone Fold

To be honest, the passport-style smartphone format took me by surprise: I’ve been testing the new Fold 8 this morning, and I love it.

I’ve been an Apple user for eight years, so I know switching to Android would be a challenge plus, the cameras on the Fold 8 seem inferior. But this form factor feels like a breath of fresh air.

I can get it for €1.200 with discounts, whereas the iPhone will likely hover around €2.500, which strikes me as prohibitively expensive.

On top of that, the iPhone’s design looks a bit uglier though nothing is certain yet. Do you think I should wait for the iPhone and spend more, or take the plunge with the Fold 8?

This format is fine, but how do you transport it?

Two cases for each device (tablet + gamepad)? One with a double bottom?

From an Atlético fan, I hope you win!

I know what it's like to lose two Champions League finals against your eternal rival and still not have a Champions League title.

You knocked us out, but it was a very good tie from both teams. I hope you beat PSG!

Do you have a tablet and also an eReader?

I recently got an iPad Mini and I read all sorts of things on it (comics, manga, novels).

I've always wanted an e-reader (specifically the Kobo Libra Colour) to protect my eyesight, but I'm not sure if it would be overconsuming for me (the iPad screen doesn't bother me), plus carrying two devices while traveling could be a hassle.

Do you think it's worth it?

Redmagic Astra: are you having trouble reading on the OLED screen?

I don't know if it's what they call PWM, but I notice, especially when reading on a black background with white letters, that the letters distort or "vibrate" a little, something that doesn't happen to me on LCD screens. Have you experienced this?

How do you find 60Hz? Doesn't it feel slow?

Almost all my electronic devices have a +90Hz refresh rate and feel very smooth; I don't understand how you can't notice it on the iPad Mini. Otherwise, it's a great device, but this frustrates me.

I know the Astra has a better chip and an OLED screen, but on the other hand, I think the SD Gen 3 performs better due to its drivers and is stylus compatible. Plus, I have a feeling an LCD screen is better for reading.

Has anyone owned both? What are your impressions?

I know there are much more powerful handheld devices out there (especially compared to mine, since I have the Deck LCD), but this console is fantastic, not just for its ergonomics and hardware, but also for its community.

As I said, there are more powerful ones, but the support and the developers (I'm seeing more and more of them adapting their games specifically for the Decks, which makes me happy) make this one of the best handheld consoles ever.
