"What if Thomas Jefferson had been right?" — An American mastodon encounters a trapper in the 19th century

I’m sharing this captivating painting by art_of_tannerstreeter on Instagram, based on a fascinating alternate history scenario: the survival of Ice Age megafauna into the era of the American West's settlement.

Historically, Thomas Jefferson was a paleontology enthusiast who rejected the notion of total species extinction. Convinced that "mammoths" or other Ice Age animals still roamed the unexplored West, he had explicitly instructed the Lewis and Clark expedition to look for signs of them!

In the image, a trapper checking his beaver traps in the Rockies finds himself just a few meters away from a male mastodon in musth—a state of heightened aggression—as it pulverizes a dead tree. With no weapon within reach, all he can do is pray the colossus doesn't catch his scent...

A fantastic illustration that blends paleontological accuracy with American folklore!

Cryptids I think we can safely put in the retirement home

*Talking about the mainland Thylacine.

These are all cryptids that are fairly large, have been extensively searched for, and exist in an area where large animals should probably have been found by now

What are other "Blackstar" type albums? Basically artists facing a terminal illness who make one final album that deals with that illness, impending death, and their life and legacy.

PS American 4 and Purple Mountains are unbelievably good 10/10 albums

Africa is home to a number of fascinating yet obscure reports of deadly bigfoot-like cryptids. From giant stone throwing apes in Morocco, to mysterious nocturnal creatures in South Africa, these are the bigfoot of Africa.

In 1946, artist Margaret Preston painted a scene she remembered from an Australian drought. Chris Rehberg (skeptically) pointed out what seem to be thylacines in the foreground which should be impossible as the art takes place on the mainland where they went extinct millennia ago

One of my favorite fake bigfoot videos is the "Harley Hoffman" footage. It was created by filmmakers for the movie "The Search for Santa", a mockumentary that parodied a search for Santa in the same way bigfoot hunters search for bigfoot.

The first "cryptids" were the Animalia Paradoxa or contradictory animals. When animal classification systems began under Carl Linnaeus, he had a special section for unconfirmed animals. Most are now regarded as mythical or misinterpretations

In the 1800s, people in South Africa reported a massive creature known as the "Waterbobbejan" or water baboon. It was described as a massive tall ape that was capable of climbing over tall walls to steal livestock. It was also fond of oranges
