How many times has someone died on Tim Heidecker related shows/media?

Becoming quite a trope at this point.

Ai and online asynchronous art classes

I’ve been teaching online Drawing and Design for several years now. At the beginning (2020/2021) - students mostly engaged with the content as they would with an in-person class. They would watch the short lecture, read the content and make the work. I gave them thorough feedback - drawing over their images in photoshop and including numerous notes. Sometimes even making timelapse demos for individual students to help them with the process…

Gradually, then all at once - it changed. Now - I’m convinced their idea of a perfect online class in art would be one to-do list with no content at all and they would be able to just wing it and turn the whole semester’s work all at once (on the very last night of course). I would probably get better evaluations with that model than I do trying to help them actually learn how to draw. The incentives are all wrong. I can see why so many online instructors give up the fight. Last semester I got my first AI generated “drawings” turned in and students started using tracing apps. So I’m shifting the approach to the class to emphasize the process, have them upload videos of their drawing process, etc. English classes at my CC are doing the same, more or less.

What have you adjusted in your online asynchronous art classes in response to AI and changing student behaviors?

Why aren’t data centers built in already cold climates?

Might be a dumb question but I’ve been wondering. Why isn’t the arctic full of data centers? Or Antarctica? It seems like putting them in the Southwest is drastically increasing cooling costs and effecting water resources in those areas. What am I missing? Is it just tax breaks and the lack of regulation that puts data centers where they are?

“Delusions” / songs about delusional people

This playlist has songs about people who are delusional - I’m sure there’s more but it’s a start

Students walk out when AI is brought up

A friend of mine is a fellow artist/educator who brought up AI with a group of high school art students and they literally walked out. They wouldn’t hear a word about it. What would you say to these students at the next class meeting?

Also - does anyone else feel like these kind of reactions by (typically chronically online) young people have an almost religious fervor to them?

Speaking to young artists about AI

I’m an artist and educator and soon I’ll be talking to a group about AI. I use it in my own work - to make 3d models with Meshy, to animate my paintings, to compose reference material, etc. I usually make work with traditional media like painting and drawing but my process to get there often incorporates AI. I’ve found quite a few interesting contemporary artists using the tool as well.

Of course there will be a lot of typical responses from the students. What is your go-to evidence and response to the usual objections to AI (water use, “stealing”, slop, etc)? I want to avoid whattaboutism (what about the water consumption of beef? Or almonds? Etc)

*gemeni made the meme - it doesn’t make any sense which I find amusing

Bluefox NX1 with Mint?

I’m considering switching back to a smart phone after using the Light phone II for a few years. The Light phone (dumb phone) is about the size of a cassette tape and my first time looking at new phones in a while really surprised me. They are huge! I was happy to find the Bluefox thanks to this group but wondered about carriers… anyone use that phone with Cricket or Mint?

Concert tickets on a dumb phone?

I’ve had a Light phone II since the beginning of 2023. It’s fine. It’s very basic. The directions are pretty bad/slow but usually I don’t need them. Calls and texts are ok. It’s dumb but good.

The main issue I’ve had is concert tickets! I love seeing live music and nearly every venue these days has QR tickets. I have to transfer tickets to friends before I leave for the show. If I got a Mudita Kompakt - would I be able to side load axs or ticketmaster? Has anyone tried this?
