Doctor says vitamin D too high at 45 ng/ml

I see a pcp and also have been seeing a naturopath - my pcp said my vitamin D was at a high level and I should cut down on supplementation. She said the supplements could be too much for my liver.

My naturopath said she’d like me to raise supplementation with the goal of getting to be in the 60-80 ng/ml range.

I am incredibly confused.

Why so many differing opinions on ideal levels?

Low Vitamin D3 - 21 ng/ml, but got prescribed 10,000 UI only

Is this prescription adequate? I feel like taking 10,000 IU a week won't do anything for my mood or mental health. I am also going to take vitamin K2, magnesium bisglycinate, and P-5-P (vitamin B6). I am 30–40 kg overweight and need to start training to lose weight, but I want to ensure my supplementation is on point as well. What are your suggestions?

I am 117kg and 173cm tall. Male 32 years old.

Severe Leg Pain & Tiredness Even After 3 Months – Vitamin D Deficiency (7 ng/mL)

I was diagnosed with vitamin d deficiency 3 months ago at 7 ng/ml. I had ankle pain in the beginning. After 2 months, It got better. However my lower leg gets incredibly tired after a bit of walking and feels like a long leg workout. EVERY Morning, I wake up in pain like I had leg workout yesterday. It's mostly the front portion of lower leg (tibialis anterior) and the calf muscles occasionally. I am forced to spend the day on bed to not work my legs hard. I walk for my necessities and I do stretching (doctor jo's full body stretching).

are there any signs of hope? Is anyone's situation like this? This has been a very long torture considering how athletic I was before this..

Additional details:

Goal Vitamin D level: Around 40–50 ng/mL (within the sufficient range).

Vitamin D type: Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).

Highest dose tried: 60,000 IU once weekly.

Current dose: 60,000 IU once monthly (maintenance dose).

Current dose duration: Took 60,000 IU weekly for about 2 months, recently switched to 60,000 IU monthly.

How long can it take for hair to start regrowing after starting supplementation?

I'm a trans woman trying to improve my hair. I have no bald spots or pattern thinning, just overal diffuse low density. My hair has improved greatly in the 2 years since starting estrogen, but it's still sort of thin and stringy, and nowhere near the unmanageable thickness of my youth.

In early February I had my doctor check some things, and my Vitamin D level was recorded at 6ng/mL. I started supplementing 50,000 IU D² weekly, and my shedding improved after just a couple weeks. At my follow-up in early June my level was recorded at 42ng/mL, greatly improved! But I still am not seeing regrowth. Should I keep waiting, or is it just not going to happen for me?

Questions regarding Vitamin D/Magnesium Dosage/Form

I’m severely deficient in Vitamin D (8 ng/mL) and Vitamin B12 (211 pg/mL) due to gut malabsorption issues I’m currently trying to figure out with my GI. I was given excellent information over at the B12 deficiency subreddit regarding cofactors which I’m currently taking in conjunction with B12 shots EOD.

Since I’m having gut malabsorption issues would the following form (drops) of Vitamin D make more sense over a regular Vitamin D capsule?

Nusava Vitamin D3 K2 Drops with MCT Oil & Omega 3

I plan on taking two drops a day which is the equivalent of Vitamin D 10,000 IU and K2 240 mcg. I’m also taking Magnesium Glycinate 450 mg every day.

Has anyone here seen this brand and is Vitamin D still viable in liquid drop form?

Unsure about supplement dose following blood test

I got a Healf blood test done as I thought my vitamin D was low (as well as iron, if that's relevant). It came back with 38.8 nmol/L.

I'm unsure about supplement dose, so am looking for advice please.

I'm vegan but have always supplemented vitamin D3 in a multivitamin (400IU).

I've just started taking 3000IU D3 daily in addition to that.

For context I'm 20f, 5'6", 130lbs.

Thanks!

Did anyone still have symptoms with vitamin D levels in the high 30s to low 40s ng/mL?

Hi everyone,
I’m curious if anyone here still experienced symptoms when their vitamin D level was in the high 30s to low 40s ng/mL (around 38–42 ng/mL).

If so:
- What level are you at?
- What symptoms were you having?
- Did they improve after increasing your vitamin D level further?
- At what level did you feel your best at?

I know everyone is different, so I’m just interested in hearing other people’s experiences. Thanks!

Quick 14-Day Results Log (30ng/ml -> 80ng/ml) - great results, take your D3!

Hi! I just wanted to capture this here for anybody searching reddit or otherwise interested in what D supplementation can do for them.

Quick Backstory

29, male, have lived in Spain for a long time and am no stranger to sun. In fact, I'm the most tanned out of all of my friend group/acquaintances. I spend impractical amounts of time in the sun. Especially in Spain, during the hottest periods or harshest sun, I'd stay and soak it in on my terrace or so, without any sunscreen. Needless to say my Caucasian-ish skin would tan very fast. (I'm from the Balkans, we seem to tan well)

In November 2024 I had my first Vitamin D test done of my life - it came out at 34.7 ng/ml. This was a week back in the balkans after being in Spain, where I would still tan wholeheartedly in the still-harsh sun. It was in range so I never thought anything of it.

It is very weird why my body wouldn't respond better to so much sun. I am now of the theory that I was relatively magnesium deficient (I've had small cramps and muscle twitches sometimes), and that bottlenecked my body's ability to produce D.

Fast-forward to June 2026 and I've moved back to the balkans. I test my D and it comes out at 30 ng/ml. I notice it's right at the bottom of the optimal range my lab shares (30-150ng/ml) and I go on a journey to get it up.

Raising the D

Having dived deep right into the D rabbit hole, including finishing the Miracle Cure book, I figured I'd max my dose as soon as possible. I took:

- 4k IU a day between June 13-21
- avg of 25.3k IU per day between June 22-27;
- ~4-6k IU a day from June 28 to now.

In this time, I raised my Vitamin D from 30 ng/ml (tested June 13th) to 80 ng/ml (tested June 29th).

Around the time I started the high dose D (June 22-27), I noticed a few things:

- good: my energy lifted massively. While I always used to drink two double espressos a day (one in the morning and one around lunch), I've cut that down to just one now. I'm not even sure I need the first one either, but I'm addicted to caffeine all things considered so haven't thought about stopping it. Keep in mind, I was never a low-energy person to begin with. If you asked me two weeks ago, I would say I'm a pretty high energy individual and people/friends sometimes struggle to keep up.

- good: my mood has noticeably improved. While I wasn't depressed or anything, we all have down moments throughout the day or months when we just feel a bit more down than usual. This has gone away. I feel positive and optimistic throughout the whole day, even if faced with some negativity. This was a noticeable improvement and has directly made me happier as a result. Biggest reason to take D imo.

- bad: my sleep worsened. Around June 24ish when I started upping the dose I noticed that I would go to sleep slower. i.e I felt energized in bed and felt my heart racing (even though it was a normal, healthy beat appropriate for bed). Basically I felt a bit amped up. On June 27th, I had trouble sleeping and only did ~5 hours. A mosquito bite woke me up in the middle of the night too (3AM) and couldn't fall asleep for 1-2 hours later. I just felt amped up.. I was still drinking two espressos at that time fwiw.

Here are the exact high dose days.

  • June 22: 14,000 IU
  • June 23: 24,000 IU
  • June 24: 40,000 IU — noticed it was a bit harder to fall asleep
  • June 25: 40,000 IU
  • June 26: 16,000 IU — slept worse; suspected the D might be involved, decided to ramp down more slowly and increase magnesium
  • June 27: 18,000 IU — slept okay but still slower to fall asleep; had a headache all day
  • June 28: 0 IU — sleep was disrupted by a mosquito bite, but overall sleep felt like it had been getting worse; decided to drop back down and reduce coffees

Worthy of note is that I again spent considerable amount of time in the sun during those days, averaging about 1-2 hours of "tanning" in those days (basically laying with just shorts in the sun, during peak-ish hours (12-6pm))

I have been taking magnesium and K2 throughout. I have since changed my magnesium ingestion to be powdered magnesium dissolved in 1L of water sipped throughout the day. I find that helps absorb it a bit better (all feelings-based, no real blood test can show u accurate results tbh)

I'm excited to see where this D journey leads me. I definitely feel better, and want to consistently stay at a higher level with a highish (by mainstream standards) dose. I am doing this responsibly, by testing PTH, a few calcium markers (including 24hr urine calcium) and D frequently enough. Most important of all, I listen to my body's subtle cues and am not trying to overdo something for the sake of it.

What got me into D is hair loss. I am fighting balding and have been on a journey to figure out what can help me with it. Curious to see how my hair changes with proper D supplementation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT (July 1): I'm an idiot. I probably dosed much more than what I shared. I have three D oil droppers:

  1. one that's 1k per drop (I used it from June 13-21),
  2. one that's 10k per drop
  3. one that's 2k per drop (I used it on June 22, 23, 26, 27)

When I did days like 14k, I used the 10k dropper for 10k and the 2k one later for the 4k. Turns out I used the 2k dropper completely wrong - 2k is apparently a very small drop out of it, and I would squeeze hard enough on it that perhaps I was taking closer to 8-10k per "2k" rather than the 2k.

I have no real way of measuring it as I was dropping it in my mouth directly, but I know that I sometimes emptied HALF the pipette, and when I now carefully drop just one small little drop, the liquid pipette doesn't even seen to move 💀

In practice, my June 22/23/26/27 days were probably much larger doses. I have no good way to estimate them, other than perhaps thinking it's +- 10-20k...

LESSON: Measure your drops VERY carefully if the dropper/pipette isn't good. My 10k dropper is a very different design than the other and is very easy to have just one drop come out. My 1k one is easy to measure too. My 2k one with the pipette is much harder to control and easier to overdose on...

Vitamin d and appetite regulation

Hello, has anybody noticed a decrease in appetite since starting supplementation? Prior to starting 5,000 IU daily, I feel like I have been extremely hungry for a long time. I am wondering if anybody else has had this experience? Do you think this is a placebo effect?

For reference, I have not been diagnosed with a deficiency. The last time I had a blood test, it was 41 ng/ml and that was a year ago. Since then, I have stopped all outdoor activities due to injury and I was not taking vitamin d supplements.

What happens if you take too much K2?

I recently got a D3/K2 supplement that has 4000IU D3 / 100mcg K2.

The thing is, what if I take a multi that also has 100mcg K2? Or if I want to double the dose of the D3/K2 supplement?

That would bump up the K2 dose to 200mcg. That's not even including the vitamin K you get from food.

Would there be any side effects to that? Is there a proportion to how much D3:K2 you should be getting, or is 100mcg standard even for high doses?

Got tested due to excessive fatigue. Is this treatment appropriate?

I recently got some blood tests done because I've been experiencing excessive fatigue, low energy, and poor stamina for quite some time.

I'm a 33-year-old male, 180cm and 82 kg. I follow a vegetarian diet. My tests showed low Vitamin D and low Vitamin B12 levels.(See image) I also have high triglycerides (384 mg/dL), and I'm not sure whether that could be contributing to my fatigue as well.

My doctor has prescribed supplements, but I wanted to get some opinions from people who have dealt with similar deficiencies.

Questions:

  1. Are these supplements generally sufficient to correct Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies?

  2. I've read that oil-based Vitamin D softgels may be absorbed better than the powder/granular sachet formulations. Is that actually true?

  3. Should I consider switching to an oil-based Vitamin D supplement, or are the prescribed powder/granular supplements equally effective?

  4. Could triglycerides as high as 384 mg/dL be contributing to my fatigue, or are my symptoms more likely related to the Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies?

My goal is to bring my Vitamin D level back into the normal range (80 ng/ml) and hopefully improve my fatigue and energy levels.

Any insights, experiences, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm gonna go ahead and reduce my vitamin D intake

It's a tough decision for me, but after hearing advice from this thread and links from the moderators, I'm gonna go ahead and reduce my intake to 10 K a day for the next couple of months and then retest. I've been on 30K iu daily for over three years. You can see I continue to climb. I thought I would plateau at some point. I am very comfortable being anywhere between 150 to 200 NG/ML. My calcium maintains in acceptable levels, and I feel fantastic all the time. Have not had a fever in over three years, and I know my vitamin D intake has changed the life of myself and my wife as far as living without sickness. I will keep you all updated. I appreciate this thread and the advice that comes from it. I've always kept an open mind and as good as I feel, and as much as I call myself a vitamin D junkie, I want to maintain my healthy cells, without wandering into dangerous territory. I'll keep you all updated. Thank you.

Vitamin D after jaw fracture — can it help with bone healing?

Hi everyone,
I recently fractured my jaw a few days ago and had splints/wires placed. Since the recovery process is expected to be slow, I’m trying to support bone healing as much as possible with nutrition and supplements.
I’m wondering what people here think about taking vitamin D after a jaw fracture. Can vitamin D actually help stimulate or support bone healing in this kind of situation?
A few questions:
What vitamin D dose would generally make sense after a fracture?
Is it better to check blood levels first, like 25(OH)D?
Should vitamin D be taken together with vitamin K2?
If yes, what amount of K2 is usually recommended, and is there any typical ratio between D3 and K2?
Are there any other supplements that are important for fracture healing, like magnesium, calcium, zinc, vitamin C, collagen, etc.?
I’m not trying to replace medical advice, but I’d like to hear people’s experiences and opinions, especially from anyone who used vitamin D/K2 during bone healing after a fracture.

Review of Sperti vitamin D lamp

I have a bile flow issue that impacts absorption of fat soluble vitamins like D.

Despite this, I have still managed to increase my D levels with high dose oral D3 supplementation up to 10,000 IU per day from 12ng to 45ng. Took almost 9 months.

I still have some lingering low D symptoms such as joint pain despite good D levels.

I once tried sun bathing and noticed that my joint pain disappeared after a single day with full body sun bathing at the beach. I assume the sun must give extra benefits than what oral D3 supplementation can give.

So I purchased the Sperti vitamin D lamp to try to replicate what sun bathing gives me and can benefit during the winter months

I have used the Sperti D lamp for 3 weeks now as directed. Only now do I feel my joint pain resolving, so it appears the UV dosage you get from the lamp is far more gentle than the sun. I also didnt experience any redness or burning.

My plan is to cease oral D3 completely and just rely on the sun lamp and I will measure my D levels at a later date to see if they change.

Skin problems with vitamin D deficiency - what has helped you?

Hi, I was diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency a couple months ago by my primary care physician. My level was 8.8ng/mL and I was prescribed 50,000 iu of D2 weekly. I’m taking a 2,000 iu daily D3 supplement after posting here in addition to the D2.

I have been experiencing really bad skin problems - rashes, bumps, dry scaly skin, very slow healing, and psoriasis on my scalp for over a year that i initially thought was a stress reaction to my husband’s death but now that I’m aware of the vitamin D deficiency, it makes a lot more sense.

I have not had the psoriasis flare up since the beginning of when I started taking vitamin D, but I have not noticed an improvement in my skin condition. It is still very dry and scaly, and any scabs from a cut or scratch seem to take an eternity to heal.

I have been to the doctor recently and my immune system isn’t compromised and I don’t have any major health problems.

Has anyone else dealt with skin problems? What have you used (other than taking vitamin D) to help repair your skin? I’m incredibly self conscious about it.

Vit. D Deficiency and Muscle Weakness

Has anyone here had muscle weakness that improved when they started Vitamin D supplements? I'm looking for personal experiences, not medical advice.

I have a lot of health issues, but they're all stable. In fact, my kidney function has improved recently, so there's no good reason I should feel so weak, but I can barely do anything with my upper arms...stirring a pot of soup on the stove, reaching up to get a glass out of the cabinet, etc. It all feels like I'm trying to climb Mt. Everest. It's a bummer because I felt really good in March and then suddenly declined.

I was thinking back and trying to pinpoint what changed, and I realized that I had been taking 10,000 IU of vitamin D daily. I meant to order 1,000, but my old eyes must have seen the listing wrong, because I got a 10,000 IU bottle. I didn't notice until I'd been taking them for a while, and I was worried I'd hurt my kidneys with too much, so I stopped those and went back to 1,000.

Well, my Vitamin D was 31 ng/ml in December, and now it's 24 ng/ml. Could the drop in D be responsible for my weakness? It would be great if it is, because it's something very simple to fix. I'd love to hear from people who had weakness that improved with supplementation.

My vitamin D treatment miracle

I am 30yo male, and a physician. I have been suffering from Ibs for 5-6 years. I also had knee pain and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knees. I also had acne since my teenage years and was on tretinoin cream on and off but had to discontinue multiple times due to skin flaking severly when using it. I also had hair thinning, fatigue, allergic rhinitis, excessive sweating (in my face, back, armpits), brain fog and migraine headache which was very bothersome for me as i was young . I also had difficulty scaling steep steps and have to weirdly scale up and down which i attributed to my knee osteoarthritis with some proximal muscle weakness in my thigh. I tried different test and all seemed normal except my osteoarthritis. I tried multiple treatments but everything was just temporary with my symptoms returning a few days or weeks after completing my treatment. I had to work extremely hard to study and do my work as an internal medicine resident. I had difficulty remembering what i just studied the day before even though i was an extremely good student in highschool and early med school. But my grades started to become average after that. I tried to understand my condition but couldn't pin it down to what the cause was. The dermatologist treats my acne, the GI- my ibs, neurologist - my migraine etc, which wasn't comprehensive at all when i look back at it now. I was reading a journal on how common vitamin d deficiency is even in Ethiopia with prevalence of more than 50% even with some estimates up to 70% of the population. So, I thought I might be deficient as i spent my days indoor studying. It was a long time of studying as med school was for seven years and then residency for three years. Even my work after my residency is almost always indoors. So I came to the conclusion that my vitamin D levels might be low. I didn't associate all my symptoms to vitamin d but thought at least my ibs could improve a bit if i take the vitamin d. As I am stationed currently in a rural hospital, I have no access to vitamin d level laboratory nearby, so i had to take it empirically and see my response. I took 50000 iu every other day for two weeks with a total dose of 250,000 iu up to now. A week back, i noticed that i no longer have any acne or skin flaking and didn't think much of it. At two week of treatment, i noticed that i have no ibs symptoms at all for a few days and couldn't remember when i had my last symptoms, as i usually suffered daily. I experimented on it by taking local foods that usually trigger my symptoms, and i didn't develop any ibs symptoms at all. This made me extremely happy and started to analyze all my symptoms. So for the past week ( starting after one week of the treatment), i have no migraine, no acne, no skin flaking in my face, no ibs symptoms, no knee pain, no allergic rhinitis even when i smell strong perfumes. My sleep time decreased and i wake up early in the morning. I have no fatigue at all and could work all day with no tiredness at all. I can now remember specific words which i had difficulty saying the word even though i knew the concept and it used to feel like it is on the tip of my tongue but couldn't just remember it. I was thinking maybe i am just feeling a placebo effect. So this morning, I started to research the association of vitamin d deficiency and my symptoms. And I was shocked to see that everything can be explained by vitamin d deficiency. Even my excessive sweating can be due to that, although i haven't noticed improvement in that regard yet. This has been like a miracle for me. I will check my vitamin d levels soon. This has made me question my work as a physician, as we were never thought to focus on such kinds of diseases. We always rely on treating specific symptoms rather than looking at a systematic level. Even most guidelines do not recommend testing for vitamin d unless it is as a last resort. I hope this recommendations will change in the future. Ask me any questions and i will try to answer them.

Edit: The every other day dosing of 50000 iu was a trial on myself to see if it has any effect. I will now be switching to either 7000 daily or 50000 weekly as taking 50,000 daily is not recommend. Vitamin d level in the blood should also be checked.

Body ache after taking cholecalciferol 60K

I (F23) have been taking 60K iu d3 every week for about 1½ months after getting tested with severely low vit-D at 5.8 ng/ml. I was naturally prescribed a very high d3 dosage to be taken every week, a shot, everyday maintainance (1000 iu), and some multivitamins. I have definitely moticed some improvement over the weeks but I have it's just that each week, right after i take my 60k Cholecalciferol I get a wave of lethargy that stays for the day. Its not too bad that I cannot move, but its certainly noticable. My joints and the muscle around feels heavy and I feel tinges of ache here and there. But I am fine the other days.

Is this normal? Or should i speak to a doctor again? I was afraid my dosage is too high but people have been reassuring me that its normal. Would be grateful for some reassurance/assistance!

Latest test 216 NG/ML still climbing.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I'm a vitamin D junkie. I guess you could say. For over three years now I've been taking 30,000 IU daily along with K2 and magnesium. I tell myself I should test every six months but for the past year, I've been busy a lot been happening in my life. But waking up feeling healthy and vibrant was the most appealing. I do not eat super healthy, I'm not a food junkie, but I eat my share of processed junk. The one thing I do consistently is take my vitamin D3 every morning, on an empty stomach with coffee. I know that doesn't make sense either. But it works for me. My previous test was 186 NG/ML. Wondering when my body will plateau but it looks like it's still climbing. I will let it go up to 250 before I reduce my vitamin D3. I get extra vitamin D3 from the sun as well as I love riding my Harley in the sunshine state of Florida. I know many of you Will come at me with these high levels, I did plenty of research, read books, etc. High levels of vitamin D3. Keep you healthy. I have not had a fever in over three years. I've had a couple of what I would call, seasonal colds where I had a runny nose, sneezing, my voice changed a little bit from the congestion. None of these episodes lasted more than 48 hours. And I've had maybe one of those episodes a year. Again feeling healthy and vibrant. Get your vitamin D3 up folks.
