r/VitaminD

I broke their Scale. Lowest Vitamin levels you might have ever seen. Anyone else who can match my levels? I bet none can.

Basically came back with <10.5nmol/L or <4.2ng/ml. but that not all....

was confused about the < sign and as it turns out it basically means my levels were below what they can even measure.

so basically its somewhere in the 0-4.2ng/ml range lol. turns out I am also deficient in Vit B12 but atleast its 170ish.... iron levels are fine but ferritin saturation percent is slightly low...maybe early signs of impending iron deficiency

Starting 60000iu/week vit d3 and daily 200mg magnesium, alongside a daily dose of 600iu vit d3 that contains some vit k2 (hard to find stand alone k2 supplement from a reputed brand in my region) and also high strength fish oil for omega 3. also starting 1500mcg vit b12 for a month and then will switch to a regular dose vit b complex that contains all the vit Bs.... will be adding back eggs to my diet...

only symptoms were a worsened ADHD like symptoms(undiagnosed btw), and increased tiredness (not fatigue) and brain fog............ no major pains or heart issues though..... maybe its because of all the milk i drink everyday that has protected my bones with through brute force consumption. lol...... wish I could somehow know exact results, but i guess breaking scale is itself a bigger non achievement...

Vitamin D and Parathyroid/PTH correlation?

Hello, I want to ask, can anyone tell me about their experiences with possibly PTH issues? I'm getting an appt. With my doc soon but don't know how to present it exactly, my Vit D. Levels are 10ng/mL, which AFAIK should mean my calcium is low, and my PTH should be on the higher end, but it looks like they might be a bit out of wack? Phosphorus also shows up as too high, which would make sense with an under functioning gland, but then calcium should be low (especially considering my severe vit D deficiency)

Does anyone have any advice on how worried I should even be about this? Thank you!

Any success stories with vegan Vitamin D?

When I take a higher dose of 'regular' (sheep's wool) vitamin D (~4k IU) I get strong side effects despite taking co-factors.

I've noticed when I take my multi that has vegan vitamin D3, I have less side effects?

Idk why but I'm doubtful of vegan vitamin D3 and it's efficacy.

I am thinking of trying a higher dose vegan D3 (like 4-5k IU) and stopping the 'regular' vitamin D supplement I take.

Anyone have success raising their levels with vegan D3? Anyone have success with reducing side effects with vegan D3 over regular? Please share.

3 months of upper abdomen pain

Hi. I'm 22F and have been Vitamin D deficient with only 16 ng/ml. Does anyone here have upper abdomen pain as their symptom for having vitamin d deficiency? I recently got my result for my whole abdomen ultrasound and it came out as NORMAL. I was suspecting gall stones or fatty liver, but they are all normal (which is a sigh of relief). Prior to this, I was told by my doctor that she may refer me to a psychiatrist for a possible GAD (because I told the doctor that I was so much anxious of my health that even a small change on my body made me overthink).

I wanna know your experience just so I could also see from other lenses, and if there are any tests that I might have overlooked.

Are vitamin D deficiency symptoms really supposed to be this severe?

I’m looking for some perspective from people who have experienced vitamin D deficiency.
About two months ago, my 25(OH)D level was 44 ng/mL. Since that blood test, I completely stopped taking vitamin D supplements and I haven’t been getting meaningful sun exposure.
I recently tested again and my level was 23 ng/mL meaning it dropped 21 points in about two months, which surprised me.
At the same time, I’ve been experiencing a lot of symptoms:
Extreme fatigue and almost no energy
Significant muscle weakness
Muscle stiffness/tension throughout my body
Dull aching/bone pain, especially around my elbows, shoulders, arms, hands and knees
Poor balance/unsteadiness when walking
Almost complete loss of appetite… I basically never feel hungry
Nausea
Depression/low mood
Increased hair shedding, much more than my normal daily shedding
My face looks unusually pale with a slightly yellowish tinge

My ferritin, b12, and everything else came back normal. But I’m wondering:

Are vitamin D deficiency symptoms really capable of feeling this severe?
And for those familiar with vitamin D levels, is a drop from 44 to 23 ng/mL over only two months after stopping supplementation and sun exposure plausible? Has anyone else experienced a decline that quickly?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if you’ve had similar symptoms or had your levels measured before and after stopping vitamin D.

Dealing with tiredness during treatment + length of treatment

Last month, upon a psychiatrist's suggestion, I got my vitamin D level checked and it turned out I'm deficient; 16 ng/mL. I was actually thrilled about it, because at last I figured where my persistent fatigue has been coming from, and could start treating it. Last week, I finally got a prescription, a weekly tablet of 30,000IU. My GP prescribed it until April and that's when she recommended I get another test done.

I have two questions:

1. How can I deal with the fatigue before my vit D reaches a sufficient level? I can't add many vit D-rich products into my diet as I'm a vegetarian. I wake up tired even after 12h of sleep, I barely have the energy to do anything, and for the past months I had been dependent on caffeine and sugar to get any energy. I know it'll get better, but it doesn't change how exhausted I am, so I wonder if there's some method to dealing with the tiredness.

2. Is it an appropriate course of treatment? It is my understanding I should reach a sufficient vitamin D level in about 8 weeks. That's autumn, I won't be able to get vit D from sunlight where I live, so it makes sense to continue supplementing throughout winter, but isn't this too high of a dose to take until April, especially since the doctor didn't order me to have a test in the meantime?

Thank you in advance!

One possible theory for why some react harshly to vitamin D

I’ve had horrible reactions to vitamin d supplementation, and I’ve found the cofactors explanation to be inadequate.

Symptoms that I’ve had feel much more like a delayed immune response it will usually show up later in the first day once I start the vitamin d but it will build and worsen so long as I keep taking it.

Usually presents with : horrible muscle weakness, cold sweats, sore throat sometimes visually red, feel like my face gets puffier as well, irritability, just very flu like symptoms

Something that has come up a lot in recent research especially in autoimmune papers for (pSS, SLE, MS, RA) is the role of certain Viruses usually Epstein Barr Virus or CytoMegalo Virus.

Both have shown wide effects on upregulating, binding, blocking, down regulating certain human receptor and transport proteins

CMV does show some interesting interactions with Vitamin D Receptors

But EBV has hyper specific peptide sequences [EBNA-3, EBNA-2] that bind onto VDR and perform unique functions

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11115686/

They found that EBNA-3 occupied the coactivators that are present in VDR but left the actual binding pocket of vitamin d open so it was still capable of binding vitamin d still.

So if you have a foreign protein occupying coactivators. They are bound to both VDR and Vitamin D and your immune system possibly can begin to develop antibodies.

This is how anti-ebna antibodies are developed and since your immune system can mistakenly build antibodies against things they are bound to you can see anti vitamin d antibodies ( once again commonly in autoimmune populations )

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S156899722400209X

So if you form antibodies against vitamin D from this mishap now once they circulate and target free vitamin d and launch white blood cells

I do think that the EBV reactivation / delayed antibody response combination map on surprisingly well to this specific symptom presentation that people have. Although I’m unsure how you would make vitamin d more tolerable if this was the cause.

Why does vitamin D deficiency cause extreme hunger

Is it me or does anyone have hunger issues with low VitD or when supplementing d3? What’s the exact reason
I’m on 14 level and i do 5k a day and after two weeks I’ll switch to 10k. Literally sleepy all the time and fatigued and when I eat after an hour I get hungry again and I have vision issues and numbness cuz of b12 deficiency

How often to check Vit D levels when starting out on supplements?

As title says. I’ve been supplementing for 3 weeks. Started at 27 ng/mL. I pay privately so wondering when I should next test. I’m not noticing any major improvements in symptoms but I may also be b12 deficient. My iron levels are fine. I’m on 10,000 iu a day plus the cofactors.

Did anyone else lose their leg hair?

Guys, did anyone else experience losing a lot of leg hair? Mine seems to be growing back, which is a good sign, I guess, but it’s happening very slowly, and the hair is much thinner and sparser than it used to be. I’ve also been experiencing eye fatigue and weak leg muscles. My vitamin D is in the 50s nmol/L range. Could these symptoms possibly be related to vitamin D?

Okay so I have a good result... where to from here (safely)?

After suspecting a vitamin D deficiency, I supplemented for about 90 days, averaging roughly 2,800 IU/day (about 250,000 IU total), with doses ranging from 1,000-10,000 IU depending on sunlight, which I tracked using D Minder. I’m 5’8” with a BMI of 25.

I finally had my level tested and it came back at 57 ng/mL. Based on reverse calculations, I was likely around 19-28 ng/mL before supplementing. Since reducing my intake a bit, D Minder estimates I’m now around 51 ng/mL.

The reason I’m asking is that I feel dramatically better than I did before. Over the last couple of weeks my sleep, mood, motivation, anxiety, and even longstanding gut issues (along with taking SEED probiotics) have all improved significantly. Also worth noting I normally get at least one bad summer cold. I was even around my mom who had a cold, and two of my kids caught it. But for me, not even a sniffle.

My question is: Should I aim to maintain this level with something like 2,000 IU/day, or let it drift lower because the test itself said this level could be dangerous? I definitely don’t want to become deficient again, but I don't want hypercalcemia either. I’ll be discussing it with my doctor as well, but I’d appreciate any thoughts.

Vitamin d3 and other issues relating to it

So yeah, as you all read the title, I was having vitamin b12 and d3 deficiencies. My b12 was at 172 nmol/L and d3 was at 32 nmol/L. I had fixed those before few months and my b12 is at 840 nmol/L which is very good, but my d3 was 100 nmol/L. I wanted to achieve atleast 200 nmol/L of d3 because I was having tiredness, sleepiness, brain fog, back pain, muscle soreness, depression, anxiety, low mood, etc.

I started taking 20000 IU of d3, 220mcg of k2 and 440 mg of magnesium glycinate before 2 weeks. During the starting of this regime I felt slightly better but then again my symptoms came back. Idk what to do, I am facing these issues since last few months and it is making my life a living hell.

My all other blood tests are good including b12, iron, ferritin, tibc, thyroid, potassium, sodium, sugar, gfr, creatinine, etc.

Megadose vitamin D causing horrible leg pain? Or is it the deficiency itself? So confused!

I’m really confused about what’s happening and hoping someone has experienced something similar.

I recently found out my vitamin D was low (29 nmol/L). I’ve been having pretty horrible aching/burning leg and knee pain, muscle cramps, fatigue, etc.

The fatigue especially has been horrible but the leg pain is virtually unbearable.

My doctor has put me on 100,000 IU vitamin D once a month to correct the deficiency.

Initially, when I had my blood tests done, I was so fatigued that I could barely get out of bed. I’ve also noticed in the past that when my vitamin D has been in the lower side (40-50), my knees and joints can become quite achey painful, particularly during sleep.

I took my first 100,000 IU vitamin D megadose, and a few days later I ended up in hospital with severe leg and hand pain. After about two weeks, the pain seemed to gradually subside.

About three weeks later, I took another 100,000 IU dose. A few days afterward, my legs started hurting again, although it was relatively mild and only lasted a day or so.

Now, another month later, I started noticing my legs hurting again. I assumed this might mean my vitamin D was dropping again and that I needed another dose, so I took another 100,000 IU megadose.

Four days later, I’m now in absolutely horrible leg and hand pain again. It's been a week of this pain and I'm losing my mind.
I’m completely freaking confused about what’s going on and what to do. I saw the GP today and all he had to say was 'Low Vitamin D shouldn't be making you feel like this'. Then slapped me with some low dose opioids that I don't even want..🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m wondering whether the pain could actually be from the vitamin D deficiency itself, or whether the high-dose vitamin D is somehow triggering/contributing to the pain. The timing is making me question everything because the pattern seems to keep repeating after the megadose.

For additional context, I also seem to be very sensitive to magnesium glycinate. When I tried it last year, it actually seemed to have the opposite effect of what I expected, it made my bones/joints hurt.

I’m also somehow very low in vitamin C, despite eating plenty of fruit and vegetables. That honestly makes no sense to me and has made me wonder whether there could be some kind of absorption issue or something else going on. I’m currently looking into that with my GI doctor as well but he doesn't think I have absorption issues as I'm not having symptoms like losing weight.

At this point I’m just trying to understand whether I’m dealing with:

symptoms from the deficiencies themselves

some kind of reaction to the large vitamin D doses

an issue with calcium/magnesium/phosphate/PTH or something similar

or something completely unrelated

Has anyone experienced anything like this with vitamin D loading doses, particularly 100,000 IU doses?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have had similar symptoms because I’m genuinely so confused about what is happening.

Have you experienced:
Significant muscle/joint/leg pain with vitamin D around 29 nmol/L?

Symptoms getting worse after starting a 100,000 IU monthly vitamin D loading regimen?

Muscle cramps or burning/aching sensations while correcting a significant vitamin D deficiency?

Similar issues with being deficient in multiple vitamins despite having a reasonably good diet?

Similar issues with magnesium glycinate?

I’m trying to work out whether I’m experiencing the effects of the deficiency, something related to correcting it, or whether there’s another underlying issue causing both the deficiencies and the pain.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation because I’m honestly so confused right now.

Why is cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) used so much more commonly than calcifediol (25-hydroxyvitamin D)?

If cholecalciferol has to go through several metabolic steps and can be affected by various factors before being converted into calcifediol, why don’t we just take calcifediol directly? Wouldn’t that bypass some of the limitations of D3 and provide a more reliable way to raise vitamin D levels?

Vitamin D deficiency and Tinnitus

I already have tinnitus. It got so bad that it was drowning out everything around me. I have vitamin D deficiency, but I've been negligent in getting enough sunshine and had stopped taking my supplements months ago. The other day I took 5000 iu. And my tinnitus was significantly lessened the next day. Was this just coincidence? Or can vitamin D deficiency cause ringing in the ears? Thanks!

TPH and cholesterol linked to vitamin d deficiency?

(The images above are my vitamin d levels ng/mL, thyroid stimulating hormone, and cholesterol for reference. I am female, 20yrs old, 4’10 and 103 pounds.)

I’ve had low vitamin d for about 2.5 years. I was treating it with prescribed Vitamin D2 50,000iu for 5 months, lost healthcare coverage, and just recently got both healthcare and the prescription back. I have not yet taken my new prescription. Upon getting blood drawn, I’ve developed new high cholesterol and TSH levels.

Nothing within my diet has ever changed, i eat Whole Foods, I’ll occasionally get fast food or a packaged snack but not often. I am not sedentary but do minimal exercise (walking and yoga 2-5x a week).

I’m curious if anyone else with vitamin D deficiency has experienced these abnormal lab results after being deficient for a long period of time. These seem related to me, but I’m not well educated and am having trouble understanding medical journals online. If you have, what have you done alongside taking prescription vitamin d to support both your vitamin d and other abnormal levels? Thank you for reading!

can vitamin d deficiency cause redness?

hi, im 22f and my vitamin d is super low (16 ng/ml). i just wanna ask if somebody else experience having skin redness after being exposed under the sun? its not rashes, but more like redness of your skin where it is exposed. is it normal or somehow correlated to vitamin d? wanna know yours. thanks!

Is this normal ? Did this happen to anyone else? Plz help.

2 months ago I got a blood test and my vitamin D level was 44 ng/ml

I stopped spending time in the sun and I stopped taking vitamin D supplements thinking I’d be fine, thinking it wouldn’t decrease that much. Boy, was I wrong. 2 months go by and I start feeling weak, tired, depressed , muscle pain, trouble concentrating and no appetite.

Few days ago i did another blood test, and my levels are at 23 ng/ml

Is it normal that my levels decreased that much in only 2 months due to no sun exposure (i dont go out much, I work from home, I rarely get sun + I stopped my vitamin D supplement of 5,000 IU)

Has anyone experienced anything similar ? The fact that it decreased by 21 ng is insane, I had no clue that vitamin D can drop that quickly…

Can Vit D cause period delays?

I (23F) had 7.6ng/ml Vit D levels in the latest blood test report- which fell into deficiency and started 60K IU weekly Vit D dosage along with few other supps like Magnesium (368mg elemental, chelated, magnesium oxide based), Omega 3 fish oil (1200mg, 560mg EPA + 400mg DHA). Have continued this regime for 5 weeks so far.

It did help a lot with few things like mood, energy, hair greying, hair growth. I started this after my last periods got over.

But here's the worrying part for me. My periods are usually like clockwork. And I'm like 6days late from my period now. I've had no changes in lifestyle besides these supps. Any one else who had this experience?? Does it have some effect on mestrual cycle? If you had a similar experience, When did it come back??

Help!! D3 supplements + doctor's prescription

Hello everyone,
I posted a few weeks ago about my experience with my doctor.

To sum it up, mid-July I got my bloodwork done and turns out my 25-OH vitamin D levels are at 12,4 ng/mL.
My doctor prescribed a monthly 25k IU dose but I don't think it's enough and several people on here agree with me.

I asked my doctor about it last week and she confirmed the dosage, told me I wouldn't really be noticing much of a change when I asked her when I should be seeing results and sent me on my merry way.

Unconvinced, this morning I bought 90 tablets of D3, 2000 IU each.

My question to you is, do you think it's safe for me to take them without interrupting the monthly 25k vial?
If so, is one enough or should I take two?

Hopefully someone can help me.

Thank you to those who will read and comment ☀️
