10 ng/mL vit D, questioning Dr’s decision, Help!

Hello, to start im a 29 year old 6ft 215lb male with a test level of 10 ng/mL, Currently taking PPIs which I believe are part of the cause of the deficiency itself. I expressed my concern of the low levels and my doctor wanted to prescribe me 5000iu daily, After asking him about a bigger dose to correct my deficiency a bit faster , He said okay but then proceeded to prescribe me 50000iu once every 14 days, which is less than 5000iu daily???
My magnesium levels are b12 levels are all in normal range, is the dosing he is recommending enough to correct my deficiency without waiting 6-8 months? Why would places like CVS sell 10000iu gummies if it wasn’t for correcting deficiency, though my DR recommends 5000iu or less for such levels as mine. So what would you guys recommend and roughly how long would it take to get my levels into the 30ng+ range taking either of the methods above?

Vitamin D deficiency masking as peri-menopause

I’m 37f (nearly 38). Yesterday, I got my results back from my recent blood work. My vitamin D levels were at 7.7 ng/ml. To say my doctor was concerned would be the understatement of the year. She’s prescribed me 50,000 ui weekly and I’m hoping it helps. Many of the things myself and my former doctor contributing to peri-menopause overlap with Vitamin D deficiency symptoms and my bloodwork showed no actual signs that I am in peri-menopause. So frustrating that I’ve spent the last year without a full blood makeup and a doctor willing to just label it peri-menopause for whatever reason. Some of the symptoms I’ve been having include: fatigue, chronic aches/pains, lack of a regular cycle, mood fluctuations, never ending sickness by way of coughs and runny noses, anxiety, and depression.

Just a little warning to other women near my age that my lack of a cycle and mood fluctuations were the only thing given any consideration and no other possibility was considered because it just HAD TO BE peri-menopause

Is my prescription way too high?

On the 4th May I (23F) got my blood work results back and I found out I was severely deficient at 5.8 ng/mL. My doctor prescribed a d3 injection with a dosage of 600,000 IU the same day and I got it. I was also told to take 1000 IU everyday which I do as well. Along with that I was prescribed 60,000 IU every week.

I know my level was way too low and high dosage is required to bring them up quick but after looking through many reddit posts and Ive noticed that not everyone is administered with this many dosages. I hope I am wrong tho.

I am generally a very anxious person when it comes to health so thinking about it has been stressing me out for days. I would love to know how was the experience for people with d levels that were similar to mine

Liposomal D3 too strong compared to regular D3?

Has anyone found liposomal d3 to be too potent as opposed to regular d3? Since it absorbs better do you have to take more k2. Supposedly it is 4-5x more absorbable than regular D. If that’s true, then just 5000 IU would be equivalent to 20-25000 IUs. The usual ratio of k2 to D3 ratio is 100mcg for every 10000IUs, with some recommending more K2. It seems like the last few times I have take 5-10k IUs I get symptoms. Just wondering what other people have experienced with it. Last time I even got pain in my sides that went away after chugging water

Low vitamin D (13 ng/ml) doctors prescribed high dose of vitamin D, wondering about vitamin K also?

I was feeling pretty crappy (for a while, years) no one ever tested my vitamin D (since 2019), well my new doctor finally did and it was at 13 ng/ml, pretty low. She prescribed me 50,000 units once every week for 12 weeks and then a daily dose of 2,000 every day after that. She did not suggest anything else, but I’m reading that vitamin K is important to take with it. Just wondering what everyone else’s experiences are with vitamin K and how much I should take.

I’ve never really taken supplements other than when I was pregnant due to one time taking otc iron supplements (doctor said to) when I had low iron and my iron levels shot up and made me sick. Nervous to take something that’s not prescribed.

Do my genetics determine how much D3 I should take?

So, I (30F) have had a broad DNA test done with a naturopathic doctor last year. We were trying to find potential root causes for my ongoing burnout and exercise intolerance (which has probably been caused and exacerbated by a mix of things through the years).

It looks like I have no special requirements regarding most nutrients, except Vitamin D. I don't know much about it myself, but will post the gene variants here in case any of you know about it:

Gene: CYP2R1, A>G result: AG

Gene: GC, T>G, result: GT

Gene: GC1296, G>T, result: TG

Apparently this says something about my liver being slow to convert D3 (I think) and also that the transport proteins are binding the vitamin too hard, making it difficult for my body to absorb it properly.

I take D3 supplements all year round, also in summer. In summer I take approx. 40 mcg daily, and in winter I take 50-70 mcg daily (depending on how much calcium I take, since part of the dose comes from my caclium supplement).

In January my D3 levels were 76 nmol/L (30 ng/ml I think). During spring I have felt increasingly shitty, I have had recurring colds and flu, and general fatigue, muscle weakness and heaviness. But I didn't think about vitamin D until recently. I am wondering if my levels have dropped even lower now, since I live in Scandinavia. Even though it's May I haven't really got any sun yet, I always wear long sleeves and trousers and SPF on my face.

I thought that a daily dose of 70 mcg D3 should be enough for me, since I haven't had any previous deficiency. Maybe my D3 levels were around 60 nmol/L - 24 ng/mL many years ago, but inbetween then and now my levels have also been higher than they are at the moment.

But I wonder if I should take an even higher daily dose because of my genetics and my symptoms. I just don't know how much higher?

What do you think? Do any of you know about the connection between genetics and D-vitamin dose needs? And could my D-vitamin levels really have dropped significantly to create my current symptoms since January?

Did intravenous supplement make you feel as bad as taking vit d supplements?

My levels are at just an 8.4 now.. Back in January they were at 13 and I supposed have just been gradually dropping. They’ve been low (under 20) for over a year, I had been taking them but I’m really bad at remembering my Medication and also like some of these others here I seem to sometimes have a weird reaction to the supplement. I was originally instructed to take 1-2000iu a day and just keep rechecking every couple months. I was taking them regularly for about a month but then they just started making me feel terrible. I thought maybe it was other medications so I kinda tried to stop those and see but I’ve now had like 10+ times where just taking the D3 alone has made me feel crap. Heart racing, sick, dizzy..

Has anybody who also experiences this tried getting IV vitamin d and not gotten the same feelings?

I have to be careful with what I get I can’t just get one of those full vitamin and supplement bags because my potassium has been really finicky and causing a lot of issues and we’re unsure why. And I really have to watch my calcium intake due to kidney stones which I know vit d can also increase. I’ve heard taking k2 with this can help but my doctor is unaware of k2.

Could a level of 62 nmol/L (24.8 ng/mL) be the cause of my depression & anxiety?

I just got my blood test results today. Also my total testosterone is 13.0 nmol/L (~375 ng/dl). I’m 25 years old.

I am really hoping if I just take some vitamin D my 12 year long depression and anxiety will disappear. Am I delusional? Is my vitamin D really low enough to be causing mental health related symptoms? I am also tired a lot, have sore knees lately, dry skin, and frequently get headaches.

Getting worse with joint pain and popping at the beginning? (18 ng/ml suppl. 2k ui + k2 + mag + sun exp)

Hi there, I'm M36, I've been found deficient of vitamin d in the last blood tests (18 ng/ml). My GP asked for vit d test cause I have been having pain in my knees for many months, together with my always present back pain (but that's an old story).
I started suppelementing on the 28th of april with a starting dose of D3 25000 ui and then a daily dose of 2000 ui + K2 and magnesium in the evening. Plus, I live where I can get a lot of D3 from the sun, so I expose my self to the sun for 15/30 minutes a day (so I can from there between 1000 and 2000 ui per day)
I was not expecting to see any improvements before months, but not only I have not seen any, but honestly it seems that my joints pain are getting worse. Like I started to feel more pain in my shoulders and ankle and most of all, my joints have always been noisy, but now they're popping and cracking like hell.
I am scared, because I am starting to be afraid that this maybe some kind of arthritis and I won't be ever be able to heal.
So can you relate with my experience? Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe it's normal this initial worsening and cracking?

Vitamin D, Fatigue, and Gut Issues

Hello,

I've been feeling off for a few years now, but horrible fatigue kicked in during January 2024 and it's slowly gotten worse with time. After looking at a few tests, I noticed my vitamin D levels dropping. It's interesting that the 23-25 drop is way larger than the 25-26.

May '23: 95 nmol/L / 38 ng/mL

March '25: 66 / 26.4 ng/mL

March '26: 63 / 25.2 ng/mL

Given my gut dysbiosis and "long covid", do you think vitamin D is playing a part in this fatigue state? I seem to have gut inflammation or something of the sort, which has given my digestive issues, and since the fatigue started in between the first two tests, maybe that drop is correlated.

What's the best way to raise my levels? And did fixing yours help fatigue at all?

Anyone Else Experience Severe Hair Shedding With Extremely Low Vitamin D Levels?

Recently found out my Vitamin D level is 4 ng/mL along with low B12 200 and elevated TSH 7.8 and ferritin 76 Over the 2 years I’ve been dealing with severe diffuse hair shedding, fatigue, low energy, poor sleep, and a lot of stress because of it.

It got mentally exhausting to the point where I shaved my head because constantly seeing hair fall everywhere was affecting me badly.

Not asking for diagnosis or treatment advice I’m already planning to consult doctors. I’m mainly curious about other people’s experiences with very low Vitamin D levels.

For those who had severely low Vitamin D:

Did you notice increased hair shedding?

How long did recovery take after correcting your levels?

Did fatigue/sleep issues improve too?

Just looking to hear experiences from others who went through something similar.

Vitamin D not going up despite large quantities

Hi all. I got tested in January and my vitamin D was 12 ng/ml. I was prescribed the 50,000UI pills once a week. I just got my levels tested again yesterday and it’s only up to 19 ng/ml. I was wondering if I should take a lower dose once a day?

The vitamin D I’m currently taking is vitamin d2, I’ve read that d3 is better for getting your levels up. I had gallbladder issues for almost a year and I suspect I have SIBO also, I will be tested for that later this month. I have severe burning in my calves and feet. My b12 is fine.

High vitamin D without supplements - Potential causes?

Hi, all. I’m not sure if this is the right sub to post in, but I figured I’d ask anyway.

A quick rundown: I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in March of this year (2026). I’ve still been having some stomach issues, as well as some minor mental health struggles, so my Gastrointestinal doctor did bloodwork to check vitamin levels. I was low on iron, folate, and b12, which is pretty common with Celiac, however I have high vitamin d.

D1 and D3 are both 117 pg/mL and D2 is <8 pg/mL. I’m not sure how those 3 differ. My calcium is within normal range at 9.4 mg/dL, so no toxicity.

I don’t take any vitamins/supplements containing vitamin D. Last one I took was in January, it was a One A Day women’s multivitamin. I now take iron and b12 supplements and a folic acid tablet.

Has anyone else had experience with hypervitaminosis D? Any tips for avoiding making it higher/worse? Anything to look out for?

Chronic vit D Deficiency despite treatment and more than enough sun

I’ve had low vitamin D for years despite taking the prescribed 50,000 IU supplements multiple times and I work outside all day almost every day. My recent Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy level was only 20.1 ng/mL, which is still considered insufficient. My ferritin is also very low at 9.

I also deal with iron deficiency anemia and B12 deficiency issues. Has anyone else had vitamin D stay low no matter how much sun or supplements you get? Did you ever find out what was causing it?
