Is it worth it to bring a car

So I am considering bringing a car to uni, as its slightly cheaper than train to get to uni in the first place and it seems much easier to bring all my stuff to move in. Also my accommodation is like 2 miles away from campus. I was wondering whether it is easier just to bring my car to and from campus rather than paying for public transport. Also wondering if there is any parking onsite. Thanks!

Finding new friends🥲(girls only)

Hey friends! I’m a freshman at UoM, studying Engineering as an undergraduate. I’m a girl looking to make some girl friends here! Maybe we could go to welcome week together or hang out sometime! XD

I’m from Shanghai and I can speak English, Chinese and some French.

Some of my hobbies: music (Mostly R&B and dance pop, my favorite artists are Tate McRae, keshi, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande), Formula 1(Ferrari), reading, sports(swimming, badminton, cycling and hiking), and I loveee animals!

Just DM me if you’re looking for new friends in UoM too! :)

Hello!

I have stupidly deleted the acceptance letter that I received, and I can't find it anywhere in my emails. I have my accommodation agreement and all that stuff.

Does anyone know who to contact about this?

What time can you move in to halls?

Im going to be moving into halls pretty late(the 20th or 21st) and was wondering what the actual time frame is for moving in. Do you have to book a slot? Or can you show up anytime after the official move in date?
Thanks!

Looking for replacement roommate

Hi we are looking for someone who wants to join our student house and join us for random activities around Manchester City and be mates with.

The accommodation is in Levenshulme and it has a lot of shops and essentials in the area.

And it also has a lot of things in the house that are genuinely lifesaving like a dishwasher, Washer and dryer along with 2 and a half bathrooms.

Finally it’s 749 pm and includes all things in the rent and it also can be changed to weekly if you wanted.

Overall, hit us up if you’re interested :)

Manchester City Council has officially approved an ePetition to review the chaos on Market Street & Piccadilly Gardens.

If you regularly walk down Manchester Market Street, or through Piccadilly Gardens, you will know it has become an absolute sensory overloaded obstacle course in the last few years.

It’s a sweetcorn scented sleep paralysis demon come to life.

The Good News: Manchester City Council officially approved an ePetition today calling for a comprehensive review of public space management in these areas.

Do you want to take the central London out of Market Street?!

Richmond Park Accommodation

I’m starting at uom this september and I’ve been allocated Richmond Park.
Just wondering if anyone who’s lived there (or is there now) could share what it’s actually like?
How social is it? What kind of events/parties happen during freshers and throughout the year? Is it easy to meet people from other flats/halls? What are the flats and kitchens like and is there anything you wish you knew before moving in?
Also curious about the mix of home/international students and the general vibe compared with other Fallowfield halls.
Any tips for Richmond specifically or things I should bring/avoid bringing would be appreciated :)
Also would appreciate any group chats etc.

I have an offer from University of Manchester but my parents want me to go into clearing

I have an offer from the University of Manchester to study Physics, but I have to go into a foundation year because my grades don't meet the standard for direct entry. I got ABB. My parents and I are not citizens of the UK, and we have lived in the UK for nearly 5 years. I have practically grown up here in terms of my mental development and the way I have matured as a person. Because of that, we were thinking of pursuing home fee status, even though we know it won't be easy and there is no guarantee that I would actually qualify. However, my parents want me to go into Clearing and find a university closer to home instead. Their main argument is that they see a foundation year, and even something like a gap year, as being for people who are dumb and have no future. I have tried to convince them that this isn't necessarily true, and that taking a foundation year does not mean that someone is unintelligent or incapable of succeeding. In my case, it would be a route into a degree that I genuinely want to study at a university that I actually want to attend. Even if I manage to convince them to let me go to Manchester, there is another major problem which is the fees. My parents simply cannot manage the cost if I am charged international fees, especially because they already have to pay for visas for the whole family as well as all of our other living expenses like mortgage and other costs. So they were thinking that perhaps if I went through Clearing and found a course at a university closer to home, I might have a better chance of getting home fee status with no need to pay for accommodation and other things. That would also potentially reduce the amount of time I have to spend at university compared with doing a foundation year first.

I understand why my parents are thinking this way financially but for me it isnt as simple as me saying, "I want to go to Manchester," because there is a very real possibility that the cost would be too much for my family. I also wanted to use this opportunity to figure my self out as an individual. My family is quite toxic and very family-centred and most of my life has been decided by them. I am not really given much independence. I am not allowed to go out, I don't have friends, I am not allowed to have social media, and I don't even have a phone lol, despite being 18. I use my laptop required for school work to sneak to go online. I have spent a huge part of my life living according to what my family thinks is best for me rather than having much opportunity to figure out what I actually want for myself. Because of that university was not just about getting a degree for me. going away to university was also a chance to finally gain some freedom and independence. I wanted the opportunity to live somewhere away from my family, meet people, make friends, experience things for myself, and figure out who I am as a person outside of my family. I feel like I have grown up mentally in the UK but at the same time I havent really had the independence that normally comes with growing up. I dont necessarily want to escape my family forever but I desperately want the opportunity to experience life without having every decision made around what my family wants.

But now I feel completely stuck because the financial situation makes everything much more complicated.

On one hand, I have an offer from the University of Manchester to study Physics, which is something I actually want to do, and going there would give me the independence and freedom that I have been hoping for but on the other hand my parents are worried about money and visas, and I understand why they don't want to take a huge financial risk. They think that going through Clearing and finding a university closer to home could be the more sensible option, especially if it means I could potentially qualify for home fees and spend less time at university overall.

I don't know whether I am being unrealistic or selfish for wanting to go to Manchester despite the financial difficulties. At the same time, I don't know whether I would regret choosing a university closer to home simply because it is the safer and cheaper option, especially if I end up remaining under the same level of control that I have experienced throughout my life.

So right now I feel stuck between what makes financial sense for my family, what my parents think is best for my future, what I actually want to study, and what I feel like I need personally in order to finally become independent and figure myself out.

I genuinely don't know what to do.

TL;DR:
I got ABB and have a Physics offer from Manchester, but I need a foundation year. My family can't easily afford international fees, so my parents want me to use Clearing and stay closer to home, ideally somewhere I could get home fees. The problem is that my family is very controlling, and I've had basically no independence despite being 18. Going to Manchester would be my chance to finally live independently, make friends, and figure out who I am outside my family.

Missed my UoM Mechanical Engineering offer by one grade — any options beyond a remark?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here has been in a similar situation or has any advice.

I had an offer for Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester, but unfortunately I missed the requirements by one grade. I’ve been in contact with the university and the Mechanical Engineering department since results day, but so far I’ve basically been told that the only option is to get the relevant subject reviewed/remarked and hope the grade changes.

My situation is slightly unusual because I was studying in the Middle East, where our actual A-level exams were cancelled because of the conflict in the region. Our grades were therefore based on evidence submitted by the school rather than the normal final exams. I feel that at least one of my grades may not fairly reflect the level I was working at, and I’m currently looking into the review process.

I’ve also asked whether I could be considered for another engineering course, but nothing has been offered so far.

I did get my insurance choice, so thankfully I still have a university place, but Manchester was my preferred option and I’d really like to explore every possible route before giving up on it.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Is there anything else I could ask Manchester about, such as contextual consideration, extenuating circumstances because of the cancelled exams, reconsideration by the department, or any flexibility around the offer conditions? Or is a remark realistically the only way forward?

Any advice, especially from current UoM students or anyone who has dealt with admissions in a similar situation, would be really appreciated.

Manchester Foundation Year or Cardiff Architecture

Hey everyone, after receiving my A‑level results I unfortunately didn’t meet the grade requirements for Manchester Architecture. I have been offered a Foundation Year there instead. On the other hand, I went through clearing and received an offer from Cardiff for Architecture without a foundation year.

I’m currently unsure which option to choose. I know Manchester is stronger than Cardiff in terms of ranking, job prospects, and (in my opinion) the city itself. But still both strong universities. However, my main concern is the Foundation Year. I’m worried about not being able to pass it and missing out on the typical first‑year student experience. How different is the Foundation Year compared to Year 1, and how difficult is it to pass?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has done a Foundation Year or has been in a similar situation. Thank you.

Clearing University Accommodation Advice

Hi I got into Manchester university through clearing yesterday. I'm supper happy but now need to think about accommodation and know i will have to decide quickly. Can I have some advice please?

I'm not a social butterfly but would really like to make friends but I don't drink, so I think a quieter halls ith some social would suit me better.

I'd like to be fairly close to the uni. I'd like and en-quite but cost is an issue what are people's experience with shared?

I'm undecided on catered or self catered - thinking maybe catered is worth the extra cost and replaces weekly shopping?

Thanks for your help.

Female tenant needed. Tenancy takeover

🏠** **Hi everyone! I’m looking for a female student to take over my tenancy for the 2026–27 academic year. You can move in immediately if you’d like!

💷 £160 per week

👩 All-girls house with 6 rooms in total.

📍 Upper West Grove, Manchester, M13 0BB

🎓 All housemates are second-year University of Manchester students

The girls are all my friends, and I can genuinely vouch for them. They are kind, helpful, generous, and very easy to get along with.
I’m moving out because I’ll be staying with a family member, so I’m looking for someone to take over my contract.
I’m not posting the exact house address publicly, but if you’re interested, please message me privately and I’ll send you all the details, including information about the house and tenancy.
Please feel free to message me if you’re interested or know someone who might be! 😊

How does whitworth accom assign the rooms? Will guys and girls live in the same flat? Will students in different years live together? 😥

26fall incoming, but really mind sharing bathrooms and living rooms with girls ( cuz it’ll be awkward and inconvenient, guess many people think so as well?).
