Does anybody have any tips for learning to understand different accents?

Hey yall, so I just got a new job where I’m working with a lot of refugee immigrants (I live in the US, for context.)

I’m super grateful to have gotten this job and excited for the opportunity to work with this community. I think working with people who have entirely different life experiences than you is great for anyone.

That being said, I am 100% struggling heavily to understand what my coworkers are saying. I mean, even if someone speaks perfect English in the exact same accent I speak with I struggle to understand them, so obviously this is a challenge.

I feel so bad about it. I know there are people out there who will intentionally act like they can’t understand what ESL speakers are saying, pretend they can’t pronounce their names, etc. in order to be condescending, and I absolutely do NOT want my coworkers to think that I am doing that. I need to find a way to, idk, train my ears for this?

Has anybody struggled with a similar situation and how did you overcome it? I think it will get better with time naturally as I hear their voices and get accustomed to the way they pronounce things more, but I want to fix this as soon as possible. Any advice/help is appreciated.

One disclaimer: I don’t like to tell people about my ADHD/APD. Honestly, a lot of the time I feel disclosing these issues to people makes them less understanding of my struggles. People seem a lot nicer to me when they just write me off as stupid/bad at hearing, so honestly I just let people think that.

ETA: ftr in saying I don’t want to tell my coworkers about my APD and stuff, I’m not saying I think they specifically will be rude or not understanding about it. Everybody seems very nice at my new job. That’s just the general reason I don’t like to tell people. In this specific case I’m hesitant to talk about it because like I said, I’m working with refugee immigrants. Their struggles in life blow mine out of the water. While I generally subscribe to the thought process of “whether you’re drowning in two feet or two hundred feet of water, you’re still drowning.” I also subscribe to the thought process that “maybe don’t complain specifically to the person drowning in two hundred feet that you’re drowning in two.”

Thank you all in advance. This is my first time posting in this community so I hope this is an appropriate thing to post here. The rules seem pretty lax though.

I got a sunburn on my shoulders, it blistered, the blisters popped, now they’re in the healing process. Does this look okay or should I be concerned?

Ftr the shininess is bc I put Vaseline on them

ETA: if it matters, they are leaking pus. I wiped it off before taking this pic.

[Product Question] How often should I be applying this mask for best results?

My face is tanner than my body and the skin is generally dull, so my mom gave me this face mask as a gift and I’m excited to try it out, but nowhere on the box or bottle does it say how often you’re supposed to use it! I don’t want to end up frying my skin by using it too much or not seeing results by using it too little.

Bit more (potentially) relevant info:
- my skin leans on the dryer side, but it’s not too bad, and since it’s summer rn I’m not having any issues with dryness because of all the humidity.
- my skin is also a bit sensitive, but again, not too bad. And I think maybe there’s just specific ingredients it doesn’t like but I’ve never been able to pin down what those might be.
- my skincare routine is pretty basic, Cerave face wash, origins mega mushroom soothing lotion (I don’t use this every day though), CosRX snail mucin, and I cycle through a few different basic moisturizers, ponds and cerave. I don’t think there’s any harsh acids anywhere in my routine so I don’t think reactions with other products is a concern.
- I wear an spf 50 zinc sunscreen every day! I know that’s really important in general and especially if you’re adding acids or retinols to a skincare routine.

Thanks in advance for your help! I try to take good care of my skin but I’ll be completely honest I don’t know that much about skincare. I appreciate y’all.

Also, apologies to the mods. I formatted my post incorrectly the first time I tried posting this. I hope I got it fixed this time.

What do you think is your most “boomer-like” trait?

I’ve often heard gen z get compared to Boomers. So I’m curious, what do you guys think is your most “boomer-like” trait? I think it would be interesting to hear answers from gen zers ourselves.

Me personally, I absolutely use emojis like a boomer lmao. I probably also have an IRL trait/habit that fits more, but the one I can think of right now is the emojis. I also use GIFs quite a bit, though I’ve heard that being called a millennial thing more than a boomer thing.

Kind of a silly question, but why does my cat “attack” my dog to groom him?

TL;DR at bottom of post.

Also, “attack” is in quotes bc I know it’s just play and not actually aggressive but idk what else to call it lol.

A few months ago I was chosen by the cat distribution system and took my cat home with me. He responded really well to my mom’s Maltese dog, they’re good buds. They were wary of one another at first, but neither was ever aggressive, and now that it’s been a few months they’re acclimated to each other and they hang out and play, even occasionally cuddle.

As is (I think?) to be expected, cat likes to groom the dog sometimes. What I’m confused about as a first time cat-owner is that most of the time instead of just settling in beside the dog and getting to work, the cat sneak-attacks him (butt-wiggle for calibration included,) grabs him with both paws, and THEN starts grooming him while holding him in place.

For clarity, I’m not asking about this because I think it’s a problem or something, I’m just wondering if this is normal behavior out of pure curiosity lol.

Is he grooming in a playful way? Is it some kind of soothing tactic for when the dog doesn’t respond playfully to his sneak-attacks? (Like a way of him saying “oh, sorry dude didn’t realize you weren’t in the mood, here let me just-“)

I have also noticed he does this (both the sneak-attacks and the grooming) most often when the dog cuddles with me. Though it could just be a confirmation bias/when I’d naturally notice the behavior more thing, I’m also wondering if there is any sort of cat-psychology behind him doing it more at those times?

He does seem to slightly prefer me to others in the house, but he doesn’t seem particularly bonded specifically to me if that makes any sense. So idk if it’s a territorial thing (idek if cats get territorial about their people like that.) I do play with the cat a lot so I’m also thinking that maybe he’s just trying to get us all to play together? Idk I’m probably overthinking it.

Idk, I just think it’s a really cute quirk and as a first time cat owner I’m wondering what’s going on in that handsome little head of his. I’ve always wanted a cat since I was little, but since I’ve never actually had one before now I don’t know much about them and this is all new to me. I’m fascinated by everything he does. He’s a really friendly, active boy. I think he’s the perfect cat for a noob like me.

Anyway, sorry for the long post I just wanted to gab about my boy. My friends and family are all really sick of hearing about him constantly haha.

TL;DR — my cat sneak-attacks my dog while he’s chilling to grab onto and groom him, and I’m wondering what’s going on in his head when he does that.

Haven’t shit in an ungodly amount of time. I’m having chia seeds and some black coffee rn so I’m hoping that helps. Wondering how my brothers and sisters are doing in the shit department?

Stay safe, stay hydrated. Love y’all 💛

How many of y’all here are Gen Z/closer to the age of the kids than the moms?

Hey mods, delete if this isn’t allowed. Apologies in advance if so.

But I’m a 23 year old practically lifelong teen mom fan. I’ve been watching since 16&p first aired with my mom (we can debate if that was appropriate at my tender age of like 6 but in my case I think it actually did make me take BC and safe sex much more seriously in my teens.)

Most fans of teen mom/people in these subs seem to be millennials, around 30+, close to the age of moms or older. Which makes total sense and I love interacting with y’all! I love millennials. I was a buzzfeed kid and I honestly thought I was a millennial for a long time…

But I’m curious how many people in this sub are closer to my age? It can’t just be me lol. Also curious as to when my fellow Zoomers started watching 16&P/Teen Mom. Were you watching it as a kid like me or did you get into it when you were older?

Thanks for your time 🙏

Bubby

He’s so large and also SUCH a baby at the same time. I wish he liked cuddling more, but I think he gets too hot and also doesn’t like to feel restricted. Sometimes he lets me use him as a pillow for a few minutes before politely repositioning himself though.

u/80HDTV5 — 26 days ago

This is my bubby, he’s a menace to my father and society, but I love him

We know he’s some kind of lab/shepherd mix. He’s bigger than your average lab though. Very high energy, very smart and very stupid at the same time, and VERY anxious.

I think he’s part Anatolian shepherd because of his size, but idk other times I don’t think I see it as much. I’m not sure what other breeds he could be. Wondering what y’all think?

Also sorry most pics are of him asleep, that’s just what most of my pictures of him are 😂😂 he’s just so stinkin precious when he sleeps. I look at this idiot giant and think “bebe.” I also often say he has “little brother energy” because I love to annoy tf out of him. It usually doesn’t work though because he loves any kind of attention and I think he just sees it as more playing. He’s a very “down for anything as long as he gets to be with you” dog.

If my family asks, I hate him and only barely tolerate his existence. But this sweet darling boy is actually the light of my life.

I’m struggling to form sentences on Zoloft

So we’re in the early stages, I’ve been (back) on Zoloft about a month or so now but I’m still getting up to my dose so side effects are still a plenty. Like many people, attention/focus has been a bit of an issue… definitely doesn’t help that I also have ADHD that is currently not medicated.

But anyway, I am specifically (and significantly) struggling with speech and forming sentences. I like cannot figure out how to word things and will forget what I’m trying to say as I’m talking if I’m making a longer point. I am so frustrated. I feel like I sound high. The attention stuff hasn’t been too too bad but this is one specific area where the deficit is incredibly obvious and difficult to work with.

Legitimately I’ll be trying to talk and I just cannot fucking figure out which words to say, I know in my head what idea I am trying to convey but I cannot figure out how to translate it into words. It feels like one of those dreams where you’re trying to scream but no sound will come out.

I just wanted to bitch about it, hoping people might bitch back so I feel less alone. Love y’all 💛

Don’t know what to watch for movie night, what movies have you recently seen/liked or want to see?

Kinda not sure what I’m in the mood for, not sure what my brothers will be in the mood for, looking for random suggestions to potentially add to the list — our system for movie picking when no one has a specific movie to watch is that I come up with a list and my brothers pick from there. Little sister privileges for the win.

Right now on the list I have:

\- Don’t Look Up (they’re not picking this but it stays on the list until they do.)
\- Scooby Doo 2 (not particularly in the mood but we watched the first Scooby Doo recently so I figured they might want to watch the sequel)
\- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
\- Penelope
\- Hidden Figures (not particularly in the mood for this either but my brothers have never seen it and I love this movie. I grew up next to a NASA facility so I ride hard for NASA.)
\- IT
\- Twilight Zone (not the movie, but I figure we can just watch a few different eps. My brothers are woefully uneducated on The Twilight Zone, a catastrophic failure on my part.)
\- The Worst Person in the World
\- Soul
\- Onward

Again, random ass list but since I’m not being specific about what I’m looking for here, I figured it might give at least some idea of what movies I/we might be into (right now.) But honestly, throw out anything!!

Also if it helps, recently we’ve watched:

\- The Menu
\- Fast Times at Ridgemont High
\- Scooby Doo
\- Legally Blonde
\- The VVitch
\- Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man

Thanks in advance!

Update: We ended up watching Clue which is funny bc I didn’t even add it to the list, I just mentioned it was suggested multiple times and my older brother was really down for the idea. But a lot of suggestions got added to the pool for another time! Thank you everyone who commented, our list was looking stale and it’s revitalized now.

I’m so nauseous and food-averse on Zoloft and it’s driving me crazy

So I recently went back on Zoloft, which is something I’ve tried to do a few times the past few years but have never committed to because I started getting horribly nauseous and sometimes throwing up.

I was prescribed Zoloft for the first time at 12 and was on it till I was 17, I’m currently 23 and have tried going back on it maybe 2-3 times in the past 3 years. I never had nausea as a side effect as a kid, my doctor says we can become more susceptible to side effects as we get older, so it’s all par for the course.

I tried other meds but apparently a lot of medications (specifically SSRI’s but other classifications of meds sometimes too) make me nauseous now anyway, and I know Zoloft works, so me and my doc decided to bite the bullet, prescribe zofran, and get back on the Zoloft.

The zofran helps immensely, it keeps me from actually getting sick, but there are still some days I just feel awful as I’m still getting up to my dose. I’m just so tired man. I feel like my body is rebelling against me and wanted to vent. I’m already feeling much better emotionally since finally getting back on it, but the physical side effects are just hellish for the time being.

Does anyone else experience this? Tell me I’m not alone please. I’ve got the zofran, my sea bands, and peppermint tea and we’re soldiering through because I know once I get to my dose and stay there, all will be well. The side effects are not forever. But goddamn is getting to that end point hard. I just want to be healthy, man.

ETA: okay so obviously I know plenty of people experience nausea as a side effect to Zoloft, just wanted to clarify that me asking if anyone else experiences it was just me being like “tell me about your experience” not that I think I’m like special or anything.
