I replaced my AI-generated title screen with a live animated game scene — here's why

When I started building Peasant's Nightfall, the title screen was an AI-generated image. A campfire, a low-poly night scene, a peasant huddled in the dark. It looked the part. It matched the vibe. And it took about five minutes.

I shipped it, got some feedback, and the same note came back more than once: the AI image is the face of your game and it's not yours.

They were right.

What I replaced it with

The game already has a bootstrap scene — it's the scene that loads on startup, manages network state, and routes you into a room with other players. It lives in the background while the main menu sits on top of it. It already had the campfire. It already had the low-poly geometry. It was already my art.

So I stopped hiding it.

Instead of a static generated image, the title screen now animates through five real in-game camera positions — different angles of the same scene, all centered on the campfire. The camera drifts between them in a loop. The fire flickers. The world is actually there.

No compositing. No Photoshop. No generated assets. What you see on the title screen is exactly what you're about to play.

How the lighting came about

The campfire point light that heats you up during gameplay is the same light you're seeing on the title screen. That warmth bleeding into the ground, the amber radius grading out to dark — that's the in-game campfire doing its job.

Getting it to look right as a title screen took a few passes. The post-processing stack — colour grading, Sobel outlines, neutral tone-mapping — that was already in the game, already tuned for night gameplay. On the title screen it just happens to be doing its best work because the scene is carefully composed and still, rather than mid-combat.

The hardest part was the camera angles. The scene that looks great from one position looks flat from another. I took a lot of screenshots, compared them against the original AI concept as a reference for mood and lighting contrast, and kept adjusting until each stop point felt like a frame you'd want to pause on.

How I actually used AI

The AI image wasn't wasted. I used it as a brief.

It told me what the title screen should feel like — the colour temperature of the fire, how dark the background needed to be, where the warmth radius should end and the dark begin. I referenced it every time I adjusted the post-processing. It was a mood board I generated myself in five minutes rather than spending hours hunting for reference art that approximated what I was going for.

That's the right use of AI generation in a solo dev workflow. Fast reference. Rapid visualisation of intent. Not the final product. Not the face of the game.

The moment it becomes the face of the game is the moment you're shipping someone else's aesthetic as your own.

The result

Five animated camera positions. One live scene. The same campfire that keeps you alive in the game.

It took longer than generating an image. It looks better. It's mine.

Peasant's Nightfall is live on itch.io — link in bio.

The Finished Result

The Ai Interperetation

A second Angle from Live Menu

What i gave the ai and told it to edit

somewhere in the middle of it all

Starve Again — Roadmap

Starve Again — Roadmap

The game is alive and being updated regularly. Here's what's coming.

Update 1 — Night Siege Complete a dwelling and you earn warmth and shelter. You also earn a target. At nightfall, zombies rise from the ground around your base. The bigger you build, the worse the horde. Defend your fireplace or lose everything.

Alongside the siege, every crafting tier gets its own weapons, tools, and armour. No more single endgame sword — wood, stone, leather, and metal each have their own progression with stats that actually matter.

Beyond Update 1 A fifth tier is planned, locked behind a Winter Biome that hasn't been built yet. Gems, cold, and things worse than zombies.

More mobs are coming. More reasons to explore, build, and fight.

The game is free. It always will be. Jump in at https://bad-banana-dev.itch.io/starve-again

Starve Again — Update: Build Together, Survive Together

https://preview.redd.it/h1ai11jf4j5h1.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b0fdb76fea52cf00d4ec90e2521b4b42ff9271b

Starve Again — Update: Build Together, Survive Together

The latest update to Starve Again is live, and it's a big one.

Dwellings

You can now build a proper home. Lay down floor tiles, raise walls, hang a door, place a fireplace, and cap it with a roof — and the game knows you've done it. Step inside your completed dwelling and your survival stats drain to almost nothing. You're sheltered. The walls and roof fade away so you can see your character inside. Step outside and the drain comes back.

This isn't just cosmetic. A dwelling is a meaningful objective — something worth building toward and worth defending. It takes resources, time, and planning to pull off. When you do, the game rewards you for it.

Two players can build together. Two separate dwellings, or one each — both get the buff independently.

Farming

Seeds are scattered across the world. Find them, craft a tiller, and work the soil. Till a patch, plant your seed, and wait for it to grow. When it's ready, harvest it — crops go straight to your inventory and a handful of seeds fall to the ground so you can keep the cycle going.

Soil patches stick around until you destroy them. Build a farm inside your base walls and it's there for the whole run.

Storage Chests

Place a chest, fill it with materials you're not carrying. Drag items in and out, shift-click to move stacks quickly. Both players can access any chest. If a chest gets destroyed, everything inside drops to the ground.

What's Next

More systems, more content, more world to survive in. If you find something broken or something that feels wrong, drop it in the community board — every report helps.

I built a 3D multiplayer survival game from scratch. Free pre-Alpha is live.

Starve Again

Playable Link: https://bad-banana-dev.itch.io/starve-again

Platform: Windows

I've been building a 3D top-down multiplayer survival game for a few months. Just launched the free pre-Alpha on itch. Here's what's in it.

Starve Again is a 3D top-down multiplayer survival game — drop in, gather resources, craft tools, manage hunger, thirst and temperature, fight wolves and other players, die, lose your loot, respawn with nothing. Classic survival loop, actual 3D, proper multiplayer.

The night cycle is what makes it feel different. Every ten minutes the sun goes down, temperature starts draining, wolves get faster and more aggressive, and your campfire becomes the most important thing you own. No fire at night means you're dying slowly whether anything attacks you or not.

What's in it right now:

  • Full multiplayer — server authoritative, up to 6 players per session, automatic matchmaking
  • Wolves with full AI — patrol, chase, attack, death, loot drops
  • Building — walls, doors (owner-locked, destroyable by others), campfires with proximity warmth
  • Crafting — axes, swords, armour, bandages, campfire, walls, doors
  • Full stat system — hunger, thirst, temperature, oxygen in deep water
  • Death drops a loot bag at your position — anyone can loot it
  • Day/night cycle with ambience, fog, and wolf night boost
  • Spatial audio throughout

It's a pre-Alpha. Rough edges exist. One biome, one mob type, one crafting tier. More coming fast.

Free download, Windows, no account needed to play.

Feedback and bug reports very welcome — community board is open on the itch page.

Free to Play Status:
