Rewatching the Anime as an adult made me realize what a huge wasted opportunity the main story is.

I started rewatching the Anime last week, and it’s honestly sad it never got a proper ending.

Detective Conan was a huge part of my childhood. I liked the episodic cases, but the plot around the Men in Black is what really hooked me. It sucks watching it turn into a complete cash cow where the story doesn't seem to matter to the author or publisher anymore.

The characters have been stuck in the same spot for 20 years just to preserve the status quo and keep the money rolling in. If they had tightened the pacing, it could’ve been an incredible 50-to-80-episode thriller... with plenty of room left for standalone cases (even for Movies) to build up the characters. Instead, it just feels like a massive wasted opportunity.

P.S.: Replacing the German intros on Crunchyroll is the worst crime in the whole show.

Marvel does not do Redemption Arcs. (Spoiler: Spiderman BND and the MCU in general)

Following all the recent discussions about Jean in Spider-Man, a lot of people are debating whether she was introduced as "too evil," if she’s actually redeemable, and how the writers are going to handle it.

Honestly, the conclusion I’ve come to is that Marvel doesn't really do genuine redemption arcs. Characters just land on whichever side the plot needs them to be on, and their past wrongdoings get mostly brushed under the rug.

Even when Marvel tries to add some weight, it usually stays pretty surface-level:

  • Tony Stark: He’s probably the closest thing to an exception, but even his arc is fairly shallow. He stops selling weapons and goes around destroying his old tech, but the MCU never really forces him to face the actual, long-term systemic damage his weapons caused globally before his change of heart.
  • Loki: He leads an invasion of New York, gets taken into custody, and then his earthbound war crimes are basically ignored in the main timeline. When Marvel finally forced him to confront his past in the Loki series, the impact was watered down by the fact that he isn't even the original Loki... he's a 2012 Variant (L1130). Having an alternate-timeline double watch a recap reel of another version's life for instant character development is a huge narrative shortcut that bypasses real accountability.
  • Wanda Maximoff: She sets a mind-controlled Hulk loose on a populated city in Age of Ultron, causing massive destruction and casualties. Civil War mentions public fear around her for a hot minute, but the Avengers just take her in as a teammate without her ever facing real justice. Even after going full villain in WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness, you just know Marvel could bring her back tomorrow, give her a cool hero scene, and most fans wouldn't care about the body count anymore.
  • Gamora & Nebula: Nebula definitely gets more screen time to process her trauma across the Guardians movies, but at the end of the day, both of them go from helping Thanos commit atrocities across the galaxy to joining the good guys with almost zero friction.

So no, I don't think Jean was introduced "too evil" to be "saved". In comic book media, actual moral consequences almost never stick. Once the writers need someone to be a hero again, everyone just conveniently forgets what they did.

To this day, the voice of Peter Hofmann is the first one I associate with the Phantom.

My experience with The Phantom of the Opera started when my aunt brought me the CD from the Hamburg production. It was the first time I had ever heard the musical, and Peter Hofmann was singing the main role.

His performance really stuck with me, and to this day, his voice is still the first one I think of when it comes to the Phantom... I really wish I could have seen him live once... but I was way too young back then.

Luffy as a MC at this current point

I love Luffy. He has been my favorite manga character for over 25 years now. I adore how emotionally intelligent, carefree, and free of judgment he is, and how quickly he can change his opinion of someone once he learns new facts about them.

I admire his determination to achieve his dream while protecting his crew, as well as how much he’s grown since Ace’s death. But one thing that drives me nuts right now is his total lack of acknowledgment regarding Nika, Joyboy, and the bigger picture with the World Government, the Celestial Dragons, the Gorosei, and Imu.

I really hope that after recent events, Luffy locks in a bit more on that front. While I don't buy into the "Edgy/Serious Gear 5" fan theories, I would love to see a Luffy who takes what’s happening around him a bit more seriously and actually wants to engage with it.

I don't need him to be the typical "chosen one" trope, but I also really don't want a "subvert expectations" moment where he just doesn't care and does his own thing. There is simply too much buildup over two decades for that to feel satisfying.

When censoring political satire completely backfires aka... the Streisand Effect in action

The song was supposed to be featured on the 100th episode of Die Anstalt, a political satire show on the German public broadcaster ZDF (which is publicly funded).

Right before the taping, though, a CDU-affiliated ZDF executive canceled the artist’s invite. The claim was that the song could be seen as inciting violence. But, in classic Streisand effect fashion, the whole controversy ended up giving the track a massive boost.
