Is my roommate ungrateful?

I rent a room out in my apt that’s very cheap. Below mkt. my roommate forgot to lock the front entrance door the 3rd time. Even though I politely told her twice already in two months time. This time I discovered it before I went to bed and the door was slightly open as well.

I texted her to let her know. She apologized like she did the first two times. I was annoyed bc we don’t live in a good area and anyone can walk into the building. So I then emphasized its a big deal and it could not happen again. Please remember bc I got burgled in the past.

She shot back a mega text saying she understood but that I needed to talk to her with respect etc…I said that I was upset bc it happened before. She then shot me another mega text about respectful communication.

Next day, I texted her if she wouldn’t mind to take down the garbage that sat in front of our door for 3 days now. I said because I had taken out several garbage bags the other day and did repairs in the apt as well.

She ignored my text and when I came home the garbage was still there. I asked her if she got my text she said yes. She said she’ll do it tomorrow. I then threw out the trash myself and texted her that. She texted moving forward she will take out the trash when it smells.

Anyway later I confronted her why she didn’t take out the trash and she said she was angry at me because me text saying how I did other chores was rude and made her feel like she does nothing. (it’s kind of true, she does less than me).

Anyway, I am amazed she is so brazen to talk to me this way seeing she’s only been here two months. I gave her grace bc she has bad credit but thought she needed help to get back on her feet. And the room is cheap. I just don’t get why she’s not thankful to live here but keeps going on about respectful communication. Thoughts?

Utilities for Tiny Home

Hi

I am thinking of buying a cheap tiny home 25k and buying cheap land 10k.

I basically don’t want a mortgage. But was told that setting up utilities on land can be super expensive, water well, septic tank , gas line etc…

Is it cheaper trying to find a dirt cheap mobile home that already has utilities then removing the mobile home and hooking up the utility to a tiny home?

I will be living overseas 10 months out of the year so I only need a small place as a home base here. For my bank accounts and keeping my stuff here.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

I’m still on and off of grieving after my baby passed last Sunday

It’s so hard for me to talk about this. My Pekingese who was 4 years and 9 months passed suddenly of aspiration pneumonia last Sunday after 3 nights in the ER.

She was healthy and happy up until last Thursday. It’s so weird how life changes in a flash. She was all I had. I’ve struggled with human relationships but with her it was so easy. She was independent and we just let each other be. We did so many things together. Because her breathing was compromised I wes her legs and carried her around to stores, parks, stairs, bus journeys. She loved to be in her backpack and carrier bag to see the world. I cut out a hole and sewed it so it would be comfy around her neck in the front if her bag and she loved poking her head out.

I know it takes time but I feel lonely. Sometimes I replay our last days together. Through this painful lesson I am more knowledgeable about her breed. I just feel awful bc they depend on you and as owners we sometimes make the wrong decisions even when our intentions were to help them not hurt them.

I appreciate all our time from puppy to recently. We were lucky to have had a last year together as she had a fatal illness a year ago and pulled through. We nearly had 5 years together. It’s tough when they pass young.

Asian hoarding roommate

Just needed to get something off my chest. I moved into this Chinese woman's apt. The rent is very very cheap for the room around $600 in NYC. I only plan to live her for one year because beyond that I can't take her behavior and it will take me that long to pay down my debt. I had to take this room because I was laid off last year and went through my savings and only recently I found a job to slowly build up my savings again. The problem is she's an older woman who's a hoarder. She's in her 70s and I understand that she's been living in this apt for 30 years and accumulate things over the years. But it's all junk that she never uses! She hogs up all the kitchen cupboards with recycled yogurt cups and jars of dried beans. She even looked wistful and said that she couldn't bring herself to throw out her glass recycled jars of dried beans bc she loves the glass jars (are you kidding me??? These jars are like old pickle jars, spaghetti jars)! Is she mentally ill? She has some kind of illness. Then she boasted about how since she was a child, she didn't like other people touching her things so therefore this means her dish rack in the kitchen I am not allowed to use because my dishes would touch her dishes so therefore I need to dry my dishes by the windowsill! Then she used up part of the hallway for her shelves and puts a curtain in front of it so the hallway is even more narrow.

The closets in the hallway are all hers. She put her old ugly desk and old bookshelves, old washing machine, old wardrobe in my room full of her bulk buys of Chinese medicine. The bathroom is full of her junk and she keeps her mops and brooms in there which is so unpleasing to look at. I asked her today that she needs to move her furniture out of my room because I need to paint the room and move my own furniture into it. She told me that I should pay for someone to remove it if I don't want it. I had to bite my tongue to refrain from arguing with her. Then I asked if she could empty out one closet in the hallway because I am bringing my vacuum and I don't want to stick my vacuum in the bathroom. (there is no living room here because she uses the living room as her bedroom).

She's moving out next month to another city to look after her daughter's baby for the next year. In the meantime there is an extra bedroom which I rented out to a new Western roommate. That roommate didn't say anything about the junk because the room is super cheap too. But I know that once she moves in she will not be able to tolerate all this junk. When she moves out the older lady, she is still keeping her bedroom locked with her stuff in it but she won't move all her communal junk into her bedroom. It's so selfish and unfair.

Her argument is that she charges very little for our bedrooms so we have no say about her communal junk. But at the end of the day, she can't charge more than what she charges bc:

  1. this apt is very old and dirty
  2. she has so much junk
  3. there's no living room
  4. there's no laundry in the basement

The whole apt is so old and dirty and ugly.

What can I do? Why should I have to pay to move her furniture out of my room? She is sooo cheap and unfair. I am hoping when she moves out next month that if she doesn' throw out her cupboards of yogurt cups and beans and other junk in the kitchen and bathroom I am going to throw it out!

On top of that, she said she doesn't want a check in case the IRS checks her bank account and she could lose her Medicaid. So I said how am I suppose to pay you once you stay with your daughter? I said I can Venmo you then, she said no she wants cash and pay her friend in NYC in cash. Then she changed her mind and couldn't figure out how to pay her. I am already complying with her wishes, why is she so selfish?

I recently started a job as a freelancer in tech design for a big company. Here’s where it gets strange:
- after an interview with the hiring manager and another Tech Designer, HR reached out to me and asked me what salary range I was looking for as the manager seemed kern on possible hiring me full time after freelance. I said 115-125k. I have 8 yrs experience as a senior tech designer.
- then i didn’t hear back for a week
- after a week i reached out and said i can be flexible with negotiations in order to work with them.
- they HR reached out that night and said if i could ‘possibly’ start in a couple of days. And they would go over details with me prior to start date.
- i said yes i could start as asked. HR called me and went over some details and said I would be paid 55/hr. And that the manager and tech designer were sooooo happy to have me there.
- then HR reached out and said that it would ‘possibly’ be another 3 days instead of two. I said ok.
- then silence from HR. the day of my start I texted her to ask if I am starting that day, she answered yes. ( i feel like they are making me chase them for some reason)
- i go to the office, am led to a room to wait for the tech designer who interviewed me. I sit there for 20 min. Finally an assistant takes me to meet her. She’s not at her desk. So we wait. When she turns up her reception is lukewarm. Then she gives me a couple of things to measure. She then comes over to offload her family problems with me.
- then she says the manager is not in office and that she rarely comes to work bc she WFH.
- i am not set up on a computer til end of day bc IT said no one told him i was coming
- next day they ask me to WFH yet give me no work and when I do get a little work from that tech designer I rwach out to the manager who WFH to give me access to the cloud drive
- the manager who interviewed me responds but its delayed by 20 min but very terse not like someone who is soooo happy to have me there
- i work there two days and still no onboarding
- i reach out to HR to ask about payroll and time sheets as its Friday and I want to log in my hours.
- she said they have a recruitment agency that will reach me asap, i ask her if i am paid weekly ( silence from her)
- still heard nothing from the agency for timesheets.
I FEEL LIKE QUITTING THIS JOB AFTER TWO DAYS. I don’t feel valued here. I have another job offer thats full time paying me 110k. The manager and HR there are responsive not like this freelance job. The reason why I put up with the freelance is bc they are hybrid and super flex hours but boring products. The responsive job is fast paced onsite 5 days a week but feel I can learn more there.

Don’t know which job to take. Help? Sorry for the long explanation.

Job market is strange

I’ve been interviewing heavily for the past 3 weeks as a Technical Designer. It seems like even with years of experience its so hard to even get a temp offer! What happened? Worse than post Covid. In 2021/22 I interviewed for temp jobs and was offered the jobs on the spot. Now even the temp jobs are not in a rush to hire. And it seems a lot want to lowball you or work less than 40 hrs a week or when they need you. Can someone please explain because I’ve been unemployed since last year. Thanks

Living in Philly but interviewing in NYC

I had a job offer rescinded two days before starting the job. It was well paid but toxic bosses at interview. Needed the money as I’ve been unemployed for a year. Laid off last year. The offer was rescinded bc I let them know after the offer that I was only commuting from Philly for a month or two before I find my apt in NYC. I would still get to work on time but just need to leave Philly super early. I let them know bc they asked me to fill out W2 forms for onboarding and I didn’t want to lie.

Anyway, now I have more interviews lined up in NYC bc it pays better than Philly. And the industry I am in is NYC concentrated. No jobs in Philly. Now I am wondering if I should tell anyone I live in Philly temporarily while it would take me 2 months to find a place in NYC. I have a budget and NYC is super expensive. When I let another job know I lived in Philly they lost interest. I also have a friend in NYC where I can use her address for the W2 until I get my own place. What should I do? Lie or tell the truth and risk losing another job offer? I need money. Thanks
