Scared I'll have to break veganism due to illness.. Help?

I can't afford the amount of commercial vegan meal replacement drinks (Huel, Soylent etc) needed for my current situation (illness induced malnutrition) so I've been prescribed suppliment drinks like Ensure but vegan.

First one I tried was called Actagain Plant Powered & it came right up, the second was Fortisip Plant-Based but that gave me perpetual stomach upset. Hopefully third time lucky.. I'm now due to try 'Fresubin Vegan' but if that also doesn't agree with me wtf do I do?

I know I can tolerate Ensure & Boost as I had them before going vegan, idk what's in these drinks making me ill but I'm scared if the Fresubin doesn't work out. Any ideas?

Is it my place to give honest opinion?

My dear friend is expecting a baby girl & she's dead set on naming her either Sunni or Khloeigh, her partner is on board.

I keep avoiding giving an honest opinion bc it's none of my business & I don't wanna hurt her feelings but the poor child will have a lifetime of correcting the spelling among other things.

Shall I say something or not? Sunni isn't too bad but Khloeigh is pretty terrible, idk..

ARFID recovery possible?

I honestly can't cope with this disorder anymore. I've tried exposure therapy, intense hypnosis, pills, nothing works.. I survive (barely) off of bread/toast, a baked potato, yogurt & Ensure type drinks. I manage to reach around a 1000 cals a day.

I have meal support 3 times a day at home from an organization who I can tell are getting tired of the lack of progress. If anyone has recovered or at least improved from arfid then pls kindly share how as it's destroying my life.

I'm terrified of being forcefully re-admitted to hospital & tube fed, I need to restore weight which isn't happening on the limited amount I'm consuming. Sorry for the long post & thx in advance.

Best vegan protein powder?

I'm lost.. Idk whether to get a blend (like pea + rice) or soy isolate. Then I saw Faba Bean isolate. All I know is I want something as tasteless as possible that won't alter the flavour or texture of my yogurt or porridge etc.

I just want to mix a small amount in some of my food or drink to get an extra 10g-20g daily as that's how much I'm falling short of. Any ideas? Thx

STD will be his initials..

If I go with the middle name my partner wants then our son will have the initials in the title, if we go with my choice it'll be SDD which is fine. He said it doesn't matter citing Britney Spears (BS) as an example of bad initials not being a problem but idk..

Edit - Thank you guys, I'm gonna show him these replies! Totally agree with you all & will opt for my choice.. He really made it seem like I was overreacting so thx again for the vindication.

Boys name opinion?

I'm trying to honour my late dad (John) but I don't want it as his first name & it isn't working as a middle name so I thought I'd go with Sean, it's the Irish variant of John & I actually love the name.. I thought of it before knowing its meaning.

But I'm getting disapproving looks from friends & family, mainly that it's "too plain" or "dated". What do you think?

If I do go for it then Thomas or Dylan would likely be his middle name though I'm open to suggestions. I'm not Irish but I do seem to gravitate towards Irish boys names.

Thx in advance

Will this ruin my veganism despite no cruelty?

I've been prescribed plant-based Ensure drinks but one flavour contains an additive derived from sheep's wool.. No cruelty involved so should I avoid it or just drink it?

Does vegan whole food diet cause you gastro issues?

I try to follow a whole food diet but end up falling back on refined processed foods like bread/toast bc it's gentle on my stomach. Never ending pulses, lentils, seeds, legumes, fruit & other fibrous foods causes me discomfort, bloating & nausea.

I've been vegan for years but am still relatively new to this whole food diet so I'm hoping it's an initial reaction. Has anyone else had the same issues? It's really unpleasant but I'm determined to stick with clean foods for the health benefits.

Extreme solution for ED L?

I have anorexia & ARFID, the stress & anxiety it causes me is too much. I've dropped to a very low weight again & I don't want yet another traumatic hospital admission, the last one was 7 months against my will & it nearly destroyed me.

I was thinking about asking my consultant for a PEG or nasal tube to help, then I would never have to think about or deal with food. I've googled it but I'm getting contradictory responses. I know that I found tube feeding easier than food in the past.

Has anyone heard of this option & does it sound like a reasonable 'solution'? I've been dealing with this since 1994 & have given up on any hope of recovery, it's now more about survival & staying out of hospital.

Is is true that freezing bread, potatoes & rice lowers GI?

I've been freezing my bread & ready cooked baked potatoes for yrs to save on waste, I live alone & can't get through fresh food before its 'use by' date so freezing is the only option.

But I recently heard there's a heap of benefits to freezing certain carbs, it's something to do with resistance starch & if you freeze bread then toast it apparently it's the same as "keto bread". That's great for diabetics & ppl watching their carb intake.

After some research I've been left confused by so-called experts & they're contractory conclusions. Do you believe it's true?

Vegan diet "lacking" according to dietician?

F/33, 5'2, 40kg. I've been having the same 3 meals for years due to Arfid but I've been assigned a dietician who told me my diet is "lacking in B vitamins, iron & quality protein". She urged me to do "exposure therapy" & slowly incorporate fish & poultry into my diet.

I was vegan long before developing Arfid & have managed to keep myself out of hospital for 2 yrs (much of my life has been in & out of hospital being force tube fed due to malnutrition). My daily diet..

Breakfast - Vegan meal replacement smoothie (20g protien)

Lunch - 2 slices of wholegrain bread/toast topped with 2 tbsp of pure peanut butter Dessert - Plain soya yogurt, blueberries & ground almonds (23g protein)

Supper - Stir-fried tempeh or seitan pieces with rice & veg. Dessert - Same as lunch (18-22g protein)

I snack on raw veg & hummus, I also take a multi vitamin daily. Is this woman correct? I'm slowly gaining weight so must be doing something right.

Why do vegans "struggle with protein so much?

I'm not surprised by that assumption from non vegans (Joe Rogan still thinks it despite getting destroyed by James Wilks during a debate about it). But I hear it so often from actual vegans, mostly in the fitness community.. "It's such an effort to get enough protein".

I manage to get 65g daily without trying or eating much, it's more than I actually need as I weigh less than 40kg at 5'1 (I'm underweight due to illness but am gaining), the foods I like just so happen to be rich in protein.. legumes, tofu, smoothies etc

Am I missing something? It's honestly not difficult at all to get enough quality protein on a plant-based diet.

Vegan meal replacement/weight gain shake?

Hello, I was advised to post this here from the r/vegan sub for more knowledgeable replies. I'm dangerously underweight due to ARFID & the doctor prescribed Ensure, I told them I'm vegan & now have a prescription for "Plant-Powered Actagain".

Has anyone tried it? Or any other vegan weight gain shake? If so, is it nice? I can't do Huel powder, I tried but it's too gritty. It must be a smooth consistency.

I currently use YFood vegan meal powder for breakfast & it's delish but not quite high enough in calories to use for all my meals. I can only eat 4 foods in small amounts (plain soya yogurt, jacket potato, toast, peanut butter) which isn't enough to sustain a healthy weight hence the meal replacement.

Thanks in advance.

Is cheese addiction real?

So I recently kicked my "cheese addiction" (so embarrassing) which held me back for months from going full plant-based. I read that it's like heroin in terms of its addictive properties which seems unbelievable to me, but it would explain why it took so long to wean myself off it despite my very strong convictions.

I still have cravings but found a vegan substitute that I guess is my cheese 'methadone'.. It definitely eases the cravings.

So is cheese THAT addictive? I'm getting conflicting answers from Google but if true, why not eggs or milk.. Why cheese?

Are vegetarians really "worse" than meat eaters?

I've heard it so many times from other vegans & I don't understand. I don't engage in those convos bc I was a veggie for 34 yrs before going vegan recently, it was down to ignorance on my part.. I really thought as long as the dairy was pasture-raised or free range I wasn't causing any suffering, I obv learned I was wrong.

But could someone kindly explain the logic that a vegetarian is doing more harm than meat eaters?

The best vegan ice cream?

I've tasted a few & some are delish, others not so much. I think the oat or soya based ones are the better of the bunch bc of the mild base, it's easily disguised. Ben & Jerry's is the best I've tasted, Swedish Glase a close 2nd. You?

Found a cheese substitute thanks to Reddit!

Strained plain soya yogurt mixed with nutritional yeast, chives, lemon juice & tapioca starch (or any thickener of your choice).. finish with a dash of vegan worcestershire sauce & you have the best soft cheese/dip alternative for a baked potato, crackers etc! It killed my craving.

I was inspired by a Reddit reply about alternatives & added my own twist. I can now say that I'm Day 1 of being 100% plant-based. My cheese addiction was ruining it. Any others struggling, pls try this recipe.. It works!

Edit - My advice is to go with Alpro plain soya yogurt, they even do a Greek Style variety. The reason being is it's bland & tasteless making it a perfect base with no aftertaste.

What's considered proper ice cream?

Is it the the Ben & Jerry's/Haagen Dazs types, the McFlurry Soft Scoop or the blocks of yellow stuff? They taste nothing like each other yet are all considered ice cream. When ppl make it at home using the typical recipe, what does it end up resembling most out of the ones I listed?

Has anyone successfully gotten through severe depression?

I was diagnosed with clinical depression & severe anxiety disorder years ago, it comes & goes bit this is the worst & longest bout so far. I have social anxiety so don't go out, all my hair has fallen out due to stress induced alopecia & I can't eat. I have no familyjustv2 friends who I speak to online.

I can't afford therapy & my NHS psychiatrist isn't on my wave length. It's so bad I want to end it all, I see no point in living in hell. Has anyone gotten through a severe prolonged depressive episode? If do, please could you share how & any advice? It would be hugely appreciated!
