Dropping your sick child off at daycare.

When I was in younger I worked at a daycare. I was in charge of the preschool age kids for the afternoon. There was one girl there I will call Katie who was the sweetest kid. She didn’t bully, shared toys and played well with the others, she was a favorite at the daycare.

One day I come in and I notice Katie is not as active as she usually is so I go talk to her. She said that her neck was hurting, I noticed though that her cheeks were red and then asked her to show me where her neck hurts, she pointed to the front and I realized that she was talking about her throat. I took her to another room without kids and took her temperature, it was 101.

After that the director got involved. Paperwork needed to be filled out and her parents needed to come get her and I was asked to stay with her until they came. We asked her how long she had been feeling this way and said a few days, but mommy and daddy were giving her medicine that made her feel better for a little while. I realized then that they knew she was sick but brought her to daycare anyway.

The director comes back after a few mins and tells me that she called the parents and someone would pick her up. They took over 2 hours to do so. During that time Katie felt worse and worse and was crying off and on and just wanted to go home. I stayed with her the entire time and tried to comfort her but she needed a doctor and/or medicine and the daycare was not authorized to give her any.

When her dad gets there he gave the director an attitude and asked why we didn’t give her some Tylenol to bring down the fever. My director told him that we are not authorized to give over the counter medication to the kids, not even cough drops, and per the centers guidelines no child can be dropped off while they are sick. If any medication of any kind needs to be administered we have to have a doctor’s note.

She then emphasized that Katie cannot return until she had a regular temperature for at least 2 days. He got pissed and started the, what am I supposed to do argument. She just told him that was not our problem and he and his wife had just exposed the entire daycare to her illness and held her ground.

Well what do you know, the very next morning I woke up with a severe sore throat. I thought that I had probably caught Katie’s sickness so I called my boss. She said that she thought this might happen because the morning person in Katie’s class had called in that morning sick, and she was also 6 months pregnant. Over the next couple of days 3 other kids were out sick, all in close age to Katie and had played with her.

I was so miserable I went to the doctor, diagnosis strep throat. It took me 3 days of misery to kick it and 5 days for my pregnant coworker. By the time I came back all of the kids were fine but they were all talking about how much they hated being sick and how happy they were to be better.

A part of me wanted to yell at Katie’s parents that their selfishness caused multiple people, including kids to miss school and work and be miserable but I said nothing since I never wanted Katie to feel bad because of her parents actions.

Unfortunately this was not the only time parents brought a sick kid to daycare just the worst one. I get that people need to work and not every job is ok with taking time off the last minute, but shouldn’t you put the welfare of your kid first. She was absolutely miserable and their lives were more important than that, her dad showed that with his attitude.

I left that job soon after because of multiple parents attitudes and the job just overall made me want a hysterectomy at 18.

Anyone else with an entitled parent story feel free to share.

How do I get them to help without making it harder on me

I am a 45f and my mother 70f was just diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. I would like help from family when she starts chemo but I am unsure how to go about this without being the bad guy like I usually am.

Some background: My mother and I live in a house that is owned by our family. It was my great grandparents house and they passed away over 35 years ago. My grandfather inherited the house and let it sit empty for a long time.

Eventually my mom and her siblings convinced my grandfather to sign over the house to them and my grandmother (his ex but they got along) spent her own money updating the house and moved in along with my mom. Several years later I moved in too while going through a tough time and stayed. We pay rent and all of the utilities. It is not a big fancy house near the beach, it is a normal single family home in a small town that no other family member actually wants to live in.

In 2019 my grandmother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and we were given 3-6 months. She was a wonderful and beloved person so it was understandable that everyone wanted to visit and spend time with her. This was not a problem. One of my mom’s sisters moved in and another took a month off to be here.

It was a revolving door of visitors that were staying here and while that is fine, some of the attitudes that I got were not. Most would park themselves on the couch when she was asleep (which was most of the time) and expect me to cook every meal and clean up every mess ( some were more disgusting than others) and there was almost no help regarding her care from them. I would walk into the living for something and would get “can you make me something to eat” or some other servant like request, and if I got mad and told them something like “the kitchen is that way” I was told that I was being rude and I am still a guest in this house, where I lived.

One of my aunts cut me out of almost everything and behaved like a massive control freak and I just ended doing what I was asked. I get it, she is your mom and she is dying so I did my best to shove it all down and just be there for my wonderful grandmother. There was a lot of other drama that I won’t get into

Now it MY mom and I am wondering how I can go about asking for real help from my family without it making me look like a monster. I would like someone to come help clean and spend time with her while I work a full time job. To support her while not taking total control over the situation and pushing out everyone who doesn’t agree with they want. To take into account what my mom wants, not what they think she should do. To not just sit on the couch all day demanding food be made (which I cook because I love to) and then making me clean the whole house afterwards while they watch tv and play games on their phone.

They are currently keeping their distance while we prepare for treatment and my mom works thru this but she is not a complainer or someone who likes to make waves, she is very go along to get along. I am fine being the bad guy for her if that is what it takes but I would prefer not to and don’t want them to start the “you can move out at anytime if you don’t like it” crap that they do when it comes to the house.

If anyone has some words of wisdom for having this conversation with my family I would appreciate it.

Outrageous bill for something they said was necessary.

When my mom was first diagnosed with cancer, the doctor told us that she needed genetic testing to determine if there was a genetic component to her cancer. They handed her a box, told her to go to the lab, get blood drawn and that was all. Thankfully the test were negative, but this test is not covered by Medicare (which is my her only insurance) and we got a bill for $13k. The doctors are asking for payment and now I am worried that they will refuse to continue treatment if we don’t pay it.

We just can’t seem to catch a break lately, if it can go wrong it will.

What is the craziest thing they ever said to justify their addiction?

My addict sister once told me that she was not truly an addict as long as she only did speed and meth for 3 days in a row and slept the 4th.

She also said there is no such thing as an alcoholic since alcohol is legal to buy.

WTF. I could never understand her reasoning.

Does anyone else have any crazy justification from theirs?

I think the telemarketer I yelled at is pranking and harassing me.

I will start this out by saying that I have been going through a lot. My mom is currently undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer and my job is restructuring and I am worried about changes that are coming.

For the last 2 weeks I have been getting daily calls from telemarketers trying to sell me new insurance. Every time I tell them not interested since I already have insurance and please remove me from the list. They always hang up, no sorry, no goodbye. I can’t screen calls right now because of doctors and insurance etc for my mom.

Tuesday I had a very hard call with my mom’s oncologist that upset me greatly. I hung up with them and cried for about 20 minutes before going back to work. Not 5 minutes later the phone rings, “Hey name that was not mine I would like to discuss your health insurance options”. I lost it, told him no and that I was sick of them calling me every single day and to please leave me alone, there were also some cuss words and I make no excuses for that. He hung up and I tried to focus back on work.

Less than 30 minutes later another one came through, same area code and prefix, but this time no one on the line so I hung up. It happened again about 45 minutes later and happened all day, the area codes the same but prefix’s different. I went online and found the do not call registry and added my name. The site says it can take a few months so I just resigned myself.

The next day was my mom’s chemo appointment. They started the infusion and she decided to nap. I had already had 2 calls that morning and when the 3rd came I was angry, but the area code was finally different and I was wary. I answer the phone, silence on the line, and started saying quietly to not wake my mom, please leave me alone, these pranks were juvenile and that I was currently sitting with my mom who was getting chemo. It was the do not call registry and they were confirming that my number was not a business line. The woman on the phone apologized for not announcing herself right away and I was relieved. I told her what was happening and she confirmed that they do that sometimes but she would add me to the database that day and told me sorry. It was nice to get some sympathy. The calls have not stopped though.

5 calls yesterday, same silence and 4 calls by lunchtime today on my PERSONAL phone number, but now they have my work number which I also can’t screen. 6 calls on my work number already today and it can’t be added to the do not call list since it is a business line. I just want it to stop! Leave me alone!

I get that telemarketers take a lot of crap, but that does not give you free rein to harass people. Maybe if you actually listened when they say not interested then you wouldn’t get yelled at. Maybe if you weren’t so pushy and demanding they just listen for a few moments to such an amazing deal after they already said no people would not hate your job.

Stop calling me and get a life or at least a better job!

Tired of carrying the mental load while they are on vacation

I feel like this an issue that keeps coming up but I don’t know what to do.

My mom and I currently live in my late great grandparents house. It is a normal single family home in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. This house legally belongs to my mom and her siblings. My mom and I pay all of the bills. I work a full time job while my mom is retired and gets SS disability. No one else in my family wants to live here full time but they love dropping in for multiple day visits and short vacations.

Last month my mom was diagnosed with cancer and is currently going through chemo. Her treatments will last until the fall, right before our annual family reunion which is always here, and I do not want anyone to come this year. Before I sound like the most selfish person alive let me give some background.

When I moved in I was told that no family can be turned away if they want to stay in the house because it belongs to everyone, fine I agree. But when most come here they act like this is a resort that has a full time staff (me) to cater to their every want. I cook all of the meals, wash all of the dishes and clean up after everyone. Some relatives need constant entertainment so I try to do that too, but constantly get complaints that I haven’t planned anything, welcome to small town living, there is very little to do. The mental load always seems to be on me and whenever something is wanted or needed I am the one that is expected to fix it.

My grandmother lived her until her death in 2019 and everyone came for visits. This was a stressful time but I am still not over the way I was treated. Most visitors came and stayed for multiple days and when my grandmother was asleep most just parked on the couch and asked me to bring them things. I was ordered around and treated like a servant by almost everyone and if I complained was told that I was being difficult and needed to think about other people’s feelings. When I would try to spend time with her I was guilted because I got to see her everyday. I guess I thought that asking people to clean up after themselves and sometimes make food for themselves was too much for them. Even after she passed the entitlement around this house continued.

In 2021 we had the biggest group ever for our reunion. We were packed to the rafters in the house and at one point I was asked to give up my room and sleep on the floor, but that was my line, I said no not happening. We had over 60 people in the house on one day and they ran me ragged. If I was walking by and their drink was empty, can you please get me a refill, or can you grab that for me on your way back. A few helped clean, but for the most part just had the best time they could because they were on vacation! I would like a vacation too, but usually have to spend my PTO at home because they show up and want things while I am working and don’t respect that I have a job that needs to come first. I am usually reminded that I knew they were coming and should have taken off.

Now one relative is determined to still have the reunion even though my mom will just be finished with chemo and most likely not up for entertaining. They have said that they will do all of the cleaning before and after but I am having a hard time believing it. This person is usually the one that makes all of the list and then tells everyone what they will do and when. I am having nightmares about them coming and standing over me while I clean to make sure that I am doing it right to their specifications and telling me how disappointed they are with me. I am 45 years old and have always been treated like a child, kept out of everything regarding any decisions and just on the outside looking in, and part of me feels like this is exactly what they want. Everyone says move but living here is so cheap and I have been able to save money and I don’t want to leave my mom all alone, she can’t afford to live anywhere else.

I just don’t know what to do, I haven’t asked for help with my moms care because I know it will be the same as always, moral support yes, but that’s it and everything else is up to me. I don’t want to care for a bunch of able bodied adults after caring for my mom for multiple months while she actually needs it. How do I say NO, we are not having a big party while mom is trying to recover from chemo, that I need help, not additional work when I am basically a guest in my own home.

You won, I left, did it make you happy

What did I ever do to you besides being born. Some of my earliest memories are of you tormenting me. I know that you were also a child but how could you do that to me. You broke my self esteem down like it was a cardboard box that was in your way. Who tells a chubby insecure teen to kill themselves, that no one wants them around. No one deserves to be treated that way. You gaslit everyone and they still blame me, your 4 years younger sibling for your bad behavior because you always blamed me for the things you did. Anytime you did something awful it was because I did something. Nothing was ever your fault. I am sure that if I had not walked away and refused contact with anyone I would have been blamed for your illness. Not the 25+ years of hardcore drug and alcohol abuse. Even now you are gone and they see you as an angel and me as a bad person for running away but you left me no choice. There was no peace no love, everything had to be a battle to fight and I could not take it. You won, did it make you happy. I was all alone with no one, I bet that made you happy, you always enjoyed my suffering.

Parents who work from home

Earlier I read and commented on a post about person complaining about parents using WFH as an alternative to paying for childcare. I agree with what the person said but when I read the comments, the breeder mafia attacked them and only focused on the one experience that they mentioned, when the post was about the trend of parents ignoring work in favor of taking care of their kids. As someone who works from home for the past 7 years I can tell you that IMO this is a problem that is only getting worse. I thought this community would be a better place to discuss this.

My first WFH job was a call center. Day one they told us that this job was not an alternative to daycare, and parents still need to find someone to care for the kids. That per company regulations we had to be working alone in a room with a closed door and interruptions needed to be for emergency’s only. Of course there was one mom who completely disregarded this and proceeded to bring her toddler to training sometimes. She would get up and leave in the middle if the kid was fussy and often just didn’t pay attention to what we were being taught. The trainer did her best to keep the class on track, but there were numerous interruptions from this kid, despite the trainer telling her multiple times to focus on what we were doing. She didn’t last more than 2 weeks after training was over. I guess she thought she would get an exception since she was a parent. I stupidly thought this was a one off, that people can’t be that entitled and selfish, I was wrong.

My next WFM job was extremely flexible. You did not have a set schedule, you just had to work a set number of hours a day, and they could be at anytime, I often worked in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep or when I had nothing else planned. Eventually I was asked to help another coworker who was struggling with the work (QA). I was told that this person was having productivity issues and stated it was because they didn’t understand some of the processes. I scheduled time to meet with them and go over my workflow and asked questions about what they were struggling with. Less than 30 minutes in they had to get up, gone 20 minutes then come back. After it kept happening I asked if they needed to reschedule and was told no, they just needed to help the kids with something and they should be good now, they weren’t. I scheduled 3 different training sessions and the issue happened each time. They also seemed to understand how the process worked and the only issue with their productivity seemed to be the fact that they spent all of their time with the kids.

WFH job after that-I got hired into a small team doing admin work. I was the only child free person on the team. At first the only issue I had was relating to my coworkers who mostly talked about their kids. Many of them would have kids on their laps during meetings, and I had no issues with this. But slowly I noticed that I was picking up a lot of slack for the team. Stuff that needed to be done by the parents was not getting done, messages were not being responded to and I was constantly having to do their work in order to meet deadlines. I would get apologies sometimes and told stuff like, my kids needed something and I had to step away. Did any of them clock out, or let someone know that they were not going to be available, no, they just got up and left and expected others to do their work they were being paid for. Meanwhile my workload increased to unmanageable levels while theirs decreased. I was doing more and more and still expected to pitch in and help them when they fell behind, which was all the time. If I needed a day off for whatever reason, no one covered for me, they just let my work pile up, but when they were out for whatever reason I was told to cover for them, and I did. After more than a year of this I had a meeting with my boss and let loose all of my frustration, how I was tired of doing other people’s work so they could get paid to play with their kids all day and how I felt I was being punished for not being a parent and they were being rewarded for it by having less work. I choose not to have kids, my childhood was filled with generational abuse and neglect and I choose to break the cycle. I do not hate kids, I just have none and truly don’t want them. My boss was surprisingly understanding and apologized to me. I was told that I only had to do my work and they would deal with the ones (not everyone) who were slacking, and they did. Unfortunately this caused other issues.

I was suddenly being treated like I was hostile, that I was not a team player. The parents stopped communicating with me about work and would only talk to each other. I was continually made to feel like I was a monster who hated families, that I was lazy for not helping out. They got a talking too and knew it was from me and treated me like a snitch.

Too many companies are forcing people to return to office because of many reasons, and this is one of them. But for some reason the conversations about RTO are being framed as greedy companies wanting to watch your every move. That parents are being punished for no reason. There are plenty of parents who have struck the balance and can do both but it takes work.

Does anyone else have examples about child free people being mistreated by the breeders at their job?
