Night bird, Puget Sound, PNW, North America
Just outside of Seattle on Puget Sound. Friday night I heard what I was assuming was a bird call that sounded almost like when a hummingbird dive bombs and makes that zipping noise. No luck with Merlin.
Saturday night around 10PM I heard it again and went outside. A large bird was perched on the overhead electrical wires and was doing a call and response with another bird across the way in some pine trees. At some point both birds were perched on the wire (though maybe was the one in the pine trees flying over to visit). Merlin said barred owl, but unlikely.
Have been trying to figure out what it could be this AM and barred owl does seem incorrect. Also took a shot in the dark listening to other large birds I know are in the area (cooper’s hawk, red tailed hawk, even grasping at common nighthawk) and can’t figure out this ID.
