Best 0W-20 oil for a Hyundai Tucson

I went down the motor oil rabbit hole this weekend. Looking for the best 0W-20 oil for my Hyundai Tucson Hybrid.

#Big Takeaway Up Front.

Small GDI engines are prone to multiple issues and good oil can mitigate them

*Minimum advice:* Use a quality full synthetic 0W-20 oil and change oil on time. Read the manual and see if you fall into the severe category.

I am in the severe category which is 5,000 miles because I drive in NYC. So stop and go traffic including highways. This is what sent me rabbit hole.

*Best 0W-20 oil to use regardless of price*

Castrol Edge Euro 0W-20 M

This European formulation of oil meets a ton of standards.

*Best Value for Top Quality*

Mobil 1 ESP X2

Also a lot of standards, but easy to find and much cheaper. (And just checked and it's completely sold out at Walmart.)

Also quite good.

Castrol Edge Extended Performance

#Big Update

Valvoline has launched a European version of Restore and Protect.

Don't know if and when this will be available in the US but this is will be a very strong contender

How I got here.

In the US they just updated the oil standards last year. API SQ It's the first update in 5 years and it seems some of the new tests to qualify for it are directly related to these types of modern engines. So I started looking for these oils. This is still pretty new and a lot of top quality oils have not been verified yet and are still listed as SP. These may already qualify as SQ and they just haven't changed their packaging yet.

Then I learned about European oil certifications I wanted an oil that also qualified for those. Specifically I heard that Volkswagen and Porsche had stringent certifications regarding turbos for both heat and cleanliness. Lots of European cars use turbos and the German autobahn has sections with no speed limit, so they want an oil that stands up to this.

So being a novice to all this I figured I would cover all my bases and see what oil has the most certifications.

Because it not easy at all to find oils that cover all the bases. A lot of US oils don't try to certify to European specs. Different additive packages are trying to do different things.

Here's the certifications I considered. I am a total novice at this.

API SQ new American standard

GF 7 new international standard

ACEA C6. This deals with heat and sludge for turbo engines

vw 508 00 This is from Volkswagen and goes beyond ACEA. It tests if a low viscosity oil like 0W-20 will stand in its viscosity grade over the long term.

0W-20 oils protect very well when in grade. It's only if they shear out of grade do you run into issues. If you use one of the oils that passes this certification you don't have to worry about having too thin an oil. Perhaps if you spend a lot of time towing stuff of mountains and super pushing your engine you may want to look elsewhere.

Porsche C20 this is a very similar test that's said to be even more strict.

Also, I didn't consider boutique oils like Amsoil or Liquid Moly

Valvoline Restore and Protect just launched in Europe. It is recommended for a lot of the standards I mentioned

>Suitable for use in automotive gasoline and diesel engines, including vehicles equipped with exhaust aftertreatment systems and turbochargers, where SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade and ACEA C5 or C6 are specified. Recommended by Valvoline Ford WSS-M2C952-A1 MB 229.71 Porsche C20 VW 508.00/509.00 Performance levels ACEA C5, C6 API SQ

What 2 Adam's products would you get?

I use Adam's waterless wash to handle bird bombs on my car.

They are having a buy one get one at equal or lesser price sale.

What two products would you recommend for someone who is not obsessed about detailing his car but keeps it looking fine. Like I'm not buying any tire products

Poodle Dog on Shore Road?

I was sitting on the park benches on my phone and a little poodle type dog came by off leash.

I expected an owner would be coming by but then I realized no one did.

So somebody might be missing a dog.

Heading towards 97th street.

Where the ramp heads into the park.

By the time I realized there was no one with this dog I went to follow but he went around the curve and was gone.

Light champagne color. Fluffy.

Hyundai dealer using ILSAC GF-7 and API SQ oil

Found out at my Hyundai dealer they are using the latest standards in oil tech. Last year they announced they moved from SP rated oil to SQ. The first new standard in 5 years.

The first time I got my oil changed at the dealer, nobody had much information about what type of oil they used. They just said full synthetic and left it at that. Quaker stayed full synthetic.

I asked about it again today and they brought me back to the service managers office And one guy told me they had just switched a Pennzoil. Quaker State in Pennzoil are owned by the same company, but Pennzoil is considered to be the more premium brand. But they still had no information about the standard they thought I was asking for if it was 0w20 or not.

Then while I was back there I actually saw several 55 gallon drums of 0-W20 and was happy to find they are using the latest standard. Because it seems like it has several things that fight against carbon buildup and are good for turbo engines and avoid low speed ignition issues.

What is API SQ/GF-7?

API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 are new motor oil standards designed to meet the increasing demands of today’s vehicles.

The API SQ standard provides improved wear protection and better high-temperature resistance across existing and ultra-low viscosity grades.

GF-7 is designed to provide superior performance and protection.

Both API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 standards were developed in conjunction with emerging engine designs and align very closely with one another.

Why the Change?

Modern engines are marvels of engineering, but they also have specific needs. The evolution of API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 is driven by several key factors:

Enhanced Fuel Economy: reduce friction and help improve fuel efficiency

LSPI Protection: Mitigates Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), a potentially damaging issue in modern turbocharged engines.

Improved Engine Cleanliness: Keeps engine components cleaner, leading to better performance and longevity

Increased Durability: Offers improved protection against wear, extending the life of critical engine parts like timing chains

Meeting Regulatory Standards: Aligns with the latest industry and environmental regulations

32,350 RAV4s sold in the US in June.

https://carbuzz.com/toyota-rav4-sales-still-struggling-june/

Last month, Toyota sold a total of 32,350 RAV4s. Production capacity seems still to be an issue as May sales were a bit higher.

>Compared to the same month last year, that number is 12.1% lower. It's even slightly down from the sales for May of this year. As such, sales for the year are also still way down compared to 2025. The total so far is 153,955, a decrease of 35.7% and more than 85,000 units versus last year.

Percentage-wise, that's better than where the SUV was just a couple of months ago, but it's still a huge drop. The diminished sales also put the RAV4 behind some of its closest competitors, such as the Honda CR-V, which topped 226,000 sales this year and is up month-over-month and year-over-year.

Previous Post https://www.reddit.com/r/rav4club/s/DSWdG7cqiH

33,500 RAV4 sales in June.

Follow up to a previous post wonder how sales will look as production ramps up

This is up 5,000 over last month. And and 50% better than the 22,000 per month average from Jan to April.

Question on range and buffer in my rental ionic 5

In Cambria CA. Driving up highway 1 to Monterey which is the next area with DC fast charging.

My motel was supposed to have electric charging. It's a rental car. When I went out to get something for my trunk it looks like it had stopped.

I have 66% of charge in a 2024 AWD model so I should have 260 miles of range if the battery is solid.

So I have about 170 miles of range with 102 miles to travel. But it's the Pacific Coast Highway so very twisty. Very turny, lots of hills

Any experiences or advice and what's the best regen revel I should use

New Cluster themes gone away after recent update?

Anyone run into this?

When I first got the themes update a month ago I got the cluster themes but I was told the peanuts theme was not available for my vehicle.

Then last week I got another update and now themes was working and I was able to purchase and install the Peanuts theme, but it seems like my cluster themes are gone now.

Has this happen to anyone else?

Renting an electric car

Going to fly into SFO and drive down the Pacific Coast highway.

Figure it might be a good time to try an EV. Not a Tesla.

Needs to be roomy for the driver.

Which model would you go for?

And what should I prep for. I'm assuming CA is going to be Chock full of chargers including at hotels.

Also assuming that EVs will be reasonably priced

What's your screens setup?

I somehow got in a bad setup and don't remember how I had it before.

Share pics for ideas.

Also is there anything deeper about Android Auto I should know about.

Always just connected and used maps and audio, but I suspect there's a bunch of tips and tricks I don't know about.

If you know of a good intro, send the link.

Is there an easy way to switch between Google maps and Waze? And is there any benefit to this?
