Luca Francesconi, Fresco, per cinque orchestre nello spazio

*Fresco* is a composition designed for the open air—a vast fresco painted by five moving wind orchestras, comprising a total of 250 musicians. It premiered in Stockholm in 2008 and has since been performed across Europe. Wind bands represent a musical tradition of immense importance in Italy, not least for its educational value; for a long time—perhaps over two centuries—they served as the country's most significant vehicle for musical outreach and pedagogy. In *Fresco*, the five bands arrive from five different towns in Campania, playing and engaging the crowds in the streets, much like the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Then, they come to a mysterious halt and begin to call out to one another, gradually taking over the town square. Like colossal musical beasts, they circle and converge, tossing out fragments of five national anthems—including our own—here and there. The square thus transforms into a symbolic space where diverse voices attempt to converse and find a common language. The game evolves into a festive celebration. These impressive walls of sound—synchronized even across great distances via a purely musical (and secret) system—finally manage to unite in the center; from there, following an unexpected and playful interlude, the performance erupts into a final, euphoric burst of joyful anarchy. Fresco è una composizione da suonare all'aria aperta, un grande affresco dipinto da cinque orchestre di strumenti a fiato in movimento, per un totale di 250 musicisti. Fu eseguito per la prima volta nel 2008 a Stoccolma e da allora ripetuto in tutta Europa. Le bande musicali sono una tradizione musicale italiana di enorme importanza, anche didattica. Per molto tempo, forse più di due secoli, sono state lo strumento divulgativo e pedagogico più importante nel nostro paese.
In Fresco le cinque bande arrivano da cinque diversi centri della Campania, suonando e coinvolgendo la gente per le strade, come ad Hamelin. Poi si fermano misteriosamente e cominciano a chiamarsi l'un l'altra, invadendo progressivamente la piazza. Come dei giganteschi animali musicali, girano e si riuniscono, lanciando qua e là frammenti di cinque inni nazionali fra cui il nostro.
La piazza diventa così un luogo simbolico dove voci diverse cercano di parlare, di trovare una lingua comune. Il gioco diventa una festa popolare. Questi impressionanti muri di suono, sincronizzati anche a grande distanza con un sistema solo musicale - e segreto - riescono infine a unirsi nel centro e da li, dopo un evento estraneo e giocoso, impazza l'ultima parte di felice anarchia, euforica. Poi le bande si ricostruiscono, si salutano e partono suonando verso casa, verso cinque diverse case.
