Mech kitbash feedback.

Anyone have any feedback on this mech I’m making? I’m not sure if these “piston shoulders” and arms are working. Thoughts?

Switch to engineering?

I’ve been working in consulting for 5 years. I’d be really interested in doing a shift towards more of an engineering role. I’d love to design injection molded parts. But in more of a design for manufacturing capacity than just ID.

I’m interested in going back to school for this, but haven’t found a great program. Lots of masters in engineering require calculus 3 or more. All I’ve done is college algebra. And I haven’t seen any compelling masters in design programs yet.

Any advice out there? How to switch to engineering through school or other means?

My pick for Carl

Tom hopper. He’s funny, he’s got the build, I can see him yelling “goddammit donut!”

Low key, I don’t have high hopes for DCCTV.

It’s been fun seeing the fan castings for the show. I’m in the Jeff Hayes plays donut camp. But I don’t think fully CGI main characters make good shows. Like they would need avatar level CGI for just donut to hold up. And I just don’t think they will. Anyone else worried it will be a flop?

Is hard plastic texturing a post molding process?

I have these gooodr sunglasses that are a couple years old. They have this nice satin Matt finish. I noticed on these corners the Matt finish is almost flaking off. Does that mean the “texture” is done after it’s molded? It seems too well adhered to be painted. Anyone have any insight on this?

When working with clients we often reference moldtech textures. When I’m doing that I always assumed that was getting baked into the mold. Is that not the case?

Industrial designer for 5x years. Want to move into design engineering/ MFG engineering.

Hi, I’ve been working in consulting for 5 years. It’s great, I love ID. But I need a higher salary. I would be really interested in doing design engineering, or manufacturing engineering. Anyone make that switch? Any advice?

Wondering if I need more school, or just wiggle my way into a job that does more of that.

Or, just any other advice on how to advance my career, don’t want to do a hard pivot to something else. I just want a higher salary cap.

Thoughts?

Mysterious electrical problem

I’ve got a 2020 Honda odyssey. And occasionally my car won’t start. It acts like the battery is dead. Doors won’t open, lights won’t turn on, won’t unlock. But sometimes, it will just start some times. We’ve had to jump it, but it’s not acting like a dead battery as well. Battery is new, alternator is good. Iv jumped it and it starts, but like super easily, not like it’s a dead battery. Also it’s making this weird noise.

Read somewhere it could be the anti theft system not working right.

Any ideas?

Mech Tank: Monkey Wrench 🐒

I’m calling it the Monkey Wrench. And it’s done! Despite my lack of painting skills, I’m happy how it turned out.

-front mandible arms
- 2x flairs
-5x optical sensors
-120mm cannon with auxiliary ammo
-Electric gauss cannon

Started paint on mech tank

Going with a dark grey. One red leg and some yellow pop colors. Legs are pretty much done, just going to add a grunge wash. Everything else is pretty early.

Tank mech primed.

Looks really good with a prime coat. Nobody get your hopes up, I’m terrible at painting.

Dune Meh-siaah

Just finished Dune Messiah in anticipation of the upcoming Denis Villeneuve movie this December, and I gotta say, I'm nervous. Despite loving the original Dune books. I found Dune Messiah kind of... underwhelming....

Here's some back story. I read Dune when I was 12 or so and thought it was fine, but not excellent. My guess is I was just a little too young to really get it. When I saw the DV movie I was blown away and how good it was. So naturally I re-read Dune the book and had a much better experience.

So I decided to read Dune Messiah in preparation for the december film. and to be honest, I wasn't that impressed. Not a lot happened in Dune Messiah. And what did happen was disjointed or kind of boring.

Anyone else worried the 3rd dune movie won't hold up?

I hold the unpopular opinion that the movies, in this case, are actually a little better than the books in some ways (fight me). I think Frank Herbert did such a good job at world building, but his writing didn't always present it the best. For Example: in Dune The betrayal of the Atreides is a surprise! but in the book we get a bunch of monologues from yueh. So we saw it coming from the very start. Similarly, the opening of dune messiah we learn the whole conspiracy no big reveal at the end. I know the plot with duncan doesn't end up the way they planned, but still. not that big of a secret what's going on the whole book.

It took someone like DV to really catch the vision of Dune and run with it. I started to really like the book, once I saw the movie. Maybe, if DV can pull this off, I will like Dune Messiah more after the movie.

Mech tank update

The mech tank has a leg! At least the frame. I like how these look, but they need to be a lot more beefy to call them good.

Sick two weeks before Olympic event.

Woke up this morning not feeling well? For those more experienced than me, do you skip workout? Do you power through? Attached my workouts for the next few days. 75min run and 2 hr bike sound really hard based how I’m feeling…

Low mileage training plan.

Just curious, anyone ever done a “low mileage” training plan.

I’ve done 8 marathons, they have always been kind of standard training where I gradually add some distance/time on feet. Plus some cross training, intervals & all that jazz.

I’m just in a bit of a busier season of life, and I’m curious if there are smaller time commitment trading plans, but they are like more intense or something like that. So you can still make improvements.

Note: if you’re going to say something along the lines of: “ if you won’t put in the time don’t bother” don’t bother. I’ve enough races I know what I’m doing. I just want to know if anyone has done something along these lines successfully. So don’t bully me.

Single/double piloted mech vs team piloted mech?

Which is more interesting single/ double pilot mechs (Pacific rim, Gundam, battle tech) or small crew mechs?

The way I think of it is Gundam is parallel to fitter jet pilots

Whereas small crewed mechs would be more like tank crews.

There are lots of examples single crewed mech shows and video games. But not really of small crew mechs. I’m thinking you could get the dynamic of the crew of the roci from the expanse, but in a mech. Seems to me to be an untapped potential.

Anyone else think there is some potential in “tank crew” mechs? Or should we stick with the single, fighter pilot, approach?

I’ve added some kind of power weapon, flair/ smoke launcher/ and two camera targeting systems.

The larger gun can be switched to different hard points using the water bottle lid system (although it looks the best as an arm) but could be mounted where the mandible arms are as well.

The smaller systems use plastic fabric snaps and can have alternative configurations as well.

Probably throw on an initial coat of paint too.

What other weapon systems should I build?

I love thrillers, but I’m not that into cereal killer/ murder mister books.

I’m thinking like a Christopher Nolan vibe. Inception, tenet, memento kind of book.

Closes book I can think of that I’ve read is Dark Matter by Bake Crouch.

What else is out there?

Basically, about 20-30 min into basically all rides my toes fall asleep.

I’ve tried a lot of things,

- Cleat position

- Strap tightness

- Saddle angle

- Saddle positioning

- seat post position

The only relief I get is when I go down hill I can pull my feet up in my cleats and I feel the blood rush back in my toes. This hasn’t ever really stopped me, but it makes the transition to run a little harder.

What should I try next?

- New shoes?

-New seat?

-Professional bike fitting?

-Any thing else I can try?
