Absolute beginner - looking for knobs to make sounds

Some context, I'm completely new to the world of synthesizers. I'm interested in putting together something that would let my kids fiddle with things and make some fun "music".

We have the Korg x Little Bits kit, which is fun, but it feels a bit limited, and unless you put the right components in the right order, you don't typically get any sound. The keyboard module is also hard to use. And the speaker is stuck on max volume, which can be grating.

I'm okay with soldering, I'm decent with 3D modeling and 3D printing, so I imagine I could design and print cases and such.

We have a keyboard, but I don't know how to make that interface with a synthesizer module. Do you need an amp/speakers on top of a synthesizer? I'm also open to drum sequencers (I think that's the right term) if that's a more self-contained starting point.

Where do you think I should start? I know stuff can get pricey pretty quickly, so I'm hoping not to break the bank. Is there anything in say 50-200 CAD range that could be a functional beginning?

I found this https://moogaudio.com/products/erica-synths-edu-diy-drum-sequencer?srsltid=AfmBOooOVxXDv8RrjxCsUnRxu6zNGMahlH3gzNALllnokbCPKg8qQso8

What else (if anything) would be needed to actually generate drum sounds?

Thanks for taking the time to help a noob!

Introducing Junimo, Jas, Joja, and Jellicle

Jodi got vetoed in favor of Jellicle. And Jas might end up being Whiskers Jazzy. But these are one day old kittens. They have the tiniest toe-beans.

For context, we're fostering the mom and now the kittens until they're weaned. Then they'll be adopted out and the mom spayed.

Couch brace

I was inspired by another post here to make a couch brace to stop the couch from squishing against the wall and making it hard to close the blinds. A ring goes around the couch leg and the wall end cups the quarter round. Works great, but it hasn't been battle tested against the 9yo leaping onto the couch.

Update: Lock Pick board game

Some of you may remember I shared a work-in-progress board game about picking a lock here: https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/comments/1tzx17j/a_board_game_about_picking_a_lock/

I've now published a gameplay walkthrough on YouTube and I've created some custom graphics in the rulebook.

I would love to get some feedback on the terminology and mechanisms I'm using to make sure I'm representing locksport accurately.

Thanks for checking it out and sharing any feedback here or in a DM!

Suboptimal cut marks?

Is it just me or are these kind of cut marks pretty useless? I'm probably cutting wrong or maybe I use the wrong kind of cutting tool. The first thing I do with my paper cutter is trim all the outside areas. Then the cut marks are gone.

The best kind of cut marks for me are the crosshairs, with bleed, at each intersection. But it seems like this is so rare for PnP games. Am I just being picky? How do you cut?

Card game leather case - complete

A while back I asked about recommendations for a game that would go well with a leather case. I opted for Quickdraw by u/RAM_Games_, and I think the leather goes great with the wild west theme.

I hand-dyed veg-tan cow leather and lined it with pre-dyed pig leather which I think looks nice with the red stitching and red and blue cards. I also stamped it with a 3D printed stamp.

Let me know what you think or if you have questions!

I'm crying my way through RotK

So I'm reading LotR to my 11 year old, and we're just about at book six in Return of the King.

It started at the end of the fellowship, when Sam doesn't let Frodo leave on his own. I just couldn't get through it without tears. It continued in the Two Towers when Treebeard realizes his friends have been destroyed. And when Sam thinks Frodo is dead.

And now in Return of the King it's like every dang session. When Gandalf leaves the city to save Faramir. When Theoden gives his speech before the charge of the Rohirrim. When he dies and wants to send a message to Eowyn. When Eomer finds her and thinks she's dead. When Faramir says "If I should return, think better of me father." When Merry says "Are you going to bury me?" to Pippin.

And most of all, when the orcs "release the prisoners", and the hewn heads of the men of Gondor are sent over the walls. I couldn't help but picture Tolkien, writing from first-hand experience in the Great War, remembering seeing his fallen brothers in arms, dead and mutilated, but still recognizable.

"But marred and dishonoured as they were, it often chanced that thus a man would see again the face of someone that he had known, who had walked proudly once in arms, or tilled the fields, or ridden in upon a holiday from the green vales in the hills."

And I broke down, midsentence, and after a while I tried to explain what Tolkien was writing about.

I don't typically get emotional in books. But I don't know how I'm going to get through the rest of this book. Yes, I have read it before and I know what's coming.

I just wanted to share that, I guess for the catharsis.

A board game about picking a lock

I hope this post is enough on topic that it is allowed. I have entered a board game design contest over at boardgamegeek.com. The game is a printable solo or multiplayer game about single pin picking a lock. I'm trying to be truthful to the mechanisms of actual lockpicking, rather than highly simplified versions you sometimes see in video games (not that there's anything wrong with those).

My question is if anyone is interested in reading the rules and maybe even giving the game a try as a sort of content expert, since I'm still somewhat of a beginner here, and I want to get the terminology, language, and mechanisms right. Is there any interest? If so, I'll share a link, if that's allowed.

Expanding card holder

I'm trying to make a cardholder that will hold more than just a credit card, like a quarter of a deck of cards. I'm wondering how to adjust the pocket piece to allow for more room. Is this something that would need to be wet formed ahead of time? How do I ensure the pocket holds the required number of cards snugly but without fighting it? Appreciate any tips!

I designed a satisfyingly smooth yet clicky magnetic points tracker that works for tracking three resources up to 9 or points/money/fish up to 999. It uses 33 5x3mm magnets and doesn't lose the set numbers when bumped or jiggled.

I think this is particularly good for: solo play, game design and prototyping, print and play, travel play.

Would you find this useful? What do you think?

I have a negative volume inside my object and I want to make a bunch of copies (using rectangular pattern) that are also negative spaces, but when I use the combine tool with cut mode, it doesn't combine them, it leaves all the copies of the body in the list, and they aren't cut out.

I've also tried combining the bodies into one body and then using that as a cut tool, but that doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

Edit: Apparently this is a known issue, but the solution here doesn't work as far as I can tell https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Pattern-of-a-hole-creates-bodies-instead-of-holes-in-Fusion-360.html

I have a little prototype of a slider with intermediate "stops" using magnets. You can see the cross-section and fusion views of the slider. My problem is that unless the pressure is placed on the center of the slider "T", it binds and catches in the groove and doesn't slide so smoothly. I have tried a number of prototypes with bigger gaps, more rounded edges and so on.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to make this smooth (with FDM 3D printing tolerances)? Or is there a better subreddit to ask this kind of question in?

Is it a matter of sanding the surfaces smooth even? I don't want to add lubricant if I don't have to.

I do some leatherworking as another of my hobbies, and I've decided it would be fun to make a leather card holder for a small card game. I've browsed a bunch of games, but I'm curious what you think is the most deserving of a handcrafted leather case, with high replayability and great artwork (not AI).

Also, how do you store your PnP games? I've 3D printed a bunch of boxes for the bigger decks, but otherwise it's just elastic bands.
