قال الله تعالى في الآيتين 65 و 66 من سورة التوبة: «وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِاللَّهِ وَآيَاتِهِ وَرَسُولِهِ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (65) لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ ۚ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَائِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَائِفَةً بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ (66)»

وقال الله تعالى في الآية 120 من سورة البقرة: «وَلَن تَرْضَىٰ عَنكَ الْيَهُودُ وَلَا النَّصَارَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَتَّبِعَ مِلَّتَهُمْ ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ هُدَى اللَّهِ هُوَ الْهُدَىٰ ۗ وَلَئِنِ اتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَاءَهُم بَعْدَ الَّذِي جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ ۙ مَا لَكَ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ (120)»

Allāh Almighty said in verses 65 and 66 of Surah At-Tawbah: “And if you ask them, they will surely say, ‘We were only jesting and playing.’ Say, ‘Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?’ (65) Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you, We will punish another faction because they were criminals.” (66)

And Allāh Almighty said in verse 120 of Surah Al-Baqarah: “And neither the Jews nor the Christians will be pleased with you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” And if you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.” (120)

I learned not long ago that the word "awesome" is literally "invoking awe" (awe + some).
