How common is elite youth soccer burnout? Looking to hear from parents and former players.

Hey everyone,

I’m a writer for Her Sports San Diego, where we focus on the women’s sports in our city and give them the visibility they deserve.

Lately, we’ve been looking closely at a pattern in competitive youth soccer: incredibly talented players completely burning out and abandoning the sport right around the 14–15 age range.

I wanted to open up a discussion here to get your honest, real-world perspectives. Whether you are a parent navigating this landscape or a former player who lived through it:

  • What do you think are the biggest contributors to this early "retirement"?
  • General perspectives on this topic, anecdotes, feedback, etc.

My goal is to listen to the community to bring much-needed awareness to the reality of youth soccer culture.

How common is elite youth soccer burnout? Looking to hear from parents and former players.

Hey everyone, I am a writer for Her Sports San Diego, where we provide a voice for women’s sports in our city.

I am looking to conduct a story exploring the intense pressures, demanding schedules, and high expectations for players within competitive youth soccer. More specifically, how these factors play into many players ultimately deciding to abandon the sport entirely once they have hit their peak in the 14-15 age range.

I want to receive general perspectives and opinions on this topic from those who have experienced this firsthand, whether it’s parents or former players. My goal is to use the community’s insights to highlight the reality of this issue and what contributes to this pattern in youth soccer.

If you have thoughts, feel free to drop them below! Or, if you’d prefer to share your story completely anonymously, please feel free to send me a DM here. You can also reach out to us directly through our Instagram at hersportssd or via email at @hersportsteam@gmail.com if you would like to speak further about this.

Thank you so much for your time and for helping us tell this story right!
