Who would thought in 1997 that Nintendo's cartridges would outlive Squaresoft and PlayStation's disks...

In line of PlayStation ending physical game distribution from 2028, this is the evolution of Nintendo's revenue for physical games (green) and digital games (blue). Physical is still highly relevant for them.

As you can clearly see here, digital has basically more than doubled its split since 2019, however it's still mostly in the same ballpark of physical sales, only in the last quarter it actually surpassed physical revenue.

For comparison Sony and Xbox have 80% of the revenue digital, so there is realistically no risk of Nintendo also killing physical distribution any time soon.

A "catch-all" thread of all the Nintendo Switch 2 PSA, tips and recommendations for new owners.

It feels like every day there is a recurring PSA post or a "tip" requested or given, so here is a summary of the most common ones:

  • Before doing literally anything else, install a screen protector

The Switch 2 screen gets easily scratched, whatever your use case (portable, mixed, docked only) it's recommended to put one. The screen gets scratched relatively easily just by inserting the console in the dock at a bad angle for example. The best 10 bucks you'd spend.

  • Unless you know what you are doing, use the HDMI cable included in the box

Common HDMI cables may not support all the features of Switch 2 otherwise. The cable included with the original Switch for example would limit the video output.

  • Only enable HDR if you have a good HDR TV

On the market there are a ton of TVs that advertise themselves as HDR but really aren't. If you have a cheap LCD TV you are most likely better off keeping HDR disabled. If you have a good >800 nits/high contrast TV then go for it.

  • The HDR configuration sucks, use a video guide instead

Just watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDEomvX0YjM

  • Make you to enable HDR output only for compatible software

For some terrible reason, Nintendo decided that by default with HDR enabled all software would output as HDR even if it is not. This is quite bad for image quality and you should make sure to output HDR only with native HDR software. Go to the settings, then "Display -> HDR Output -> Compatible Software Only".

  • The handheld screen is also a quite bad HDR screen

The Switch 2 screen is also quite poor and it is not really HDR (it's realistically half as bright than what is considered the minimum for real HDR). In 90% of the software it's also better to disable it entirely on handheld mode, however some people swear for specific games HDR in handheld more is not bad or even slightly better. Your mileage may vary but turning it off in the settings is the most recommended option.

  • Disabling IPv6 may improve internet speed

On slower connections disabling IPv6 may improve your upload/download speeds in a tangible way. Check the network settings and try a speed test before and after unflagging "IPv6 connection".

  • Enable "limit charging to 80-90%"

This options improves the longevity of the Switch 2 battery, it will hold the battery for longer in years time, but it also means you never really use the full charge (and that's why it's good, using the battery from 100% to 0% is what "kills" batteries). The toggle is in the settings under System.

  • Enable the battery charge status (%)

By default Nintendo only shows the icon of the battery charge status, you can however enable the precise % in the settings. The toggle is in the settings under System.

  • Enable "Handheld Mode Boost"

This feature is at the moment quite hidden in the menus as it's probably still somewhat "experimental". It allows the Switch 2 to run Switch software via backwards compatibility as if it was in TV mode even when the Switch 2 is in handheld mode. In most cases it increases video quality and disables any possible touchscreen support.

Enable it in settings then System > Nintendo Switch Software Handling > Handheld Mode Boost. There is a good wall of text that may be worth a read.

To check if your Switch game is being "boosted", tap the screen 3 times and a pop up saying touchscreen is disabled will appear. If it doesn't, then it's not being boosted.

  • You can automatically upload video and screenshots to the Nintendo Switch App for smartphones

If you download the app, every screen/video gets uploaded to the cloud and it can be accessed by the smartphone app. Useful for social media sharing.

  • You can disable eShop video autoplay

Nintendo's eShop will automatically play a trailer of the game you have scrolling on. It's quite annoying sometimes and it can be disabled by going on the top right profile icon, then Settings and select the "No" flag for Autoplay.

  • Internal storage, MicroSD Express and game cartridges are not equally fast

The Switch 2 internal storage is the fastest, then 2nd fastest are MicroSD Express and then only 3rd physical carts. If you care about faster load times, install the games directly on the console.

  • The vast majority of USB camera are compatible with GameChat

You don't need a Nintendo camera if you want to use GameChat, most standard USB camera can be plugged in the Switch 2 or Switch 2 dock and works just fine. It doesn't matter if it's USB-C or USB-A either. There is also a test function to check.

SEGA put so little effort in the Switch 2 version of Sonic Frontier that the official trailer they updated has the title and legal text copied and pasted from the Sonic Racing CrossWorlds trailer, including mention of a March 26, 2026 release date

https://preview.redd.it/c949bqgen29h1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=7276422f12a6bb18861a7dbb42547b0d3dfba38f

This is actually funny.

The title of the video is "Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - Launch Trailer", but the game is not a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Looking at the legal text, it appears that SEGA simply reused the template from the Sonic Racing CrossWorlds trailer and didn't change any of it.

Rhys Ifans as "Chief Designer" is possibly the best casting in For All Mankind/Star City

https://preview.redd.it/luf78yl43i8h1.png?width=980&format=png&auto=webp&s=4059b5bf798d375b0d1d953c2d8ea556f02481db

Chief Designer is currently my favorite character in SC and the casting is a good part of it.

The character is both idealistic in his desire and obsession with space exploration, but still painfully aware of what it is needed to work and succeed in Star City. It would be easy to act him as an almost parody of a big crazy scientist or the polar opposite of the spectrum, the pure noble gentleman in a bad society.

The way the acting sells this ambiguous figure, equally charismatic, capable of manipulating his way around the strict Soviet paranoid bureaucracy but also needing to compromise himself to get things done, driving everyone around him to immense dangers and also using his stature to get people to do what he wants is genuinely stellar. He nails the delivery of the dialogue and I love his mannerism. The way he walked into Lyudmilla's office in Ep.5 for example was great.

I'm now a fan.
