Starting to restaurant gig as a classical pianist

Hey Reddit, I have been a classical pianist my whole life and need to make some extra money to pay for lessons while I approach college auditions. I was thinking of putting together a setlist for a local restaurant called Bridgewater Bistro. They usually have jazz musicians play, but even though I can obviously sight read jazz I definitely cannot improv on it. Whats are some good pieces to add to a set and tips for gigging? Thanks

17 and having a career dilemma

For background, I have been a pianist since age 8 and when I was 13 I said I was going to be a concert pianist so I started practicing 4-6 hours a day. Im now 17, was accepted to Interlochen boarding school but never ended up going because they are crazy expensive and even with the scholarships it would be too much. But I feel like this made me realize something, and that is if you don’t have the funds you arent really gonna make it in the classical piano world. I just started working with one of the best teachers of my life because Juilliard was kind of my dream
and I need to prepare, but even if I got accepted I would likely be in debt for the rest of my life.

Im not saying that EVERYBODY who doesn’t come money cant make it, but its kind of a fact that a large majority of top tier pianist come from wealthy families with connections.

Recently I started getting into music production in Logic pro and am absolutely obsessed with it. I don’t know if 17 is a late start but maybe that could be something good to fall back on because most producers don’t go to college, AND music production (especially in the realm of pop and hip hop) has a wayyy bigger market than classical piano.

What kind of things did you guys produce when you were just getting started?

Hey reddit, I am 17 and even though I have been a pianist/performer for almost 10 years I am quite new to producing. I don’t really know what to produce and don’t really sing. What kinds of things did you guys start out with?

Recording of my performance I found of 16 year old me

Im now 17 and after this day I experienced one of the worst burnouts of my life. I was consistently practicing 4-6 hours a day for years but these past few months I have hit a wall and physically cant look at a piano or hear classical music. I have college auditions coming up next year so I am trying to rekindle my spark for music and get back into my routine. And on top of that you kind of constantly have to fight the thought of whether you are really skilled enough to pursue music professionally. Im stuck between choosing giving up everything again and practicing up to 8 hours a day or maybe choosing a safer career option because I have to decide whether it’s worth it or not. But anyways I hope you enjoy this clip it was one of my favorite pieces!

Type me based on my last 4 photos from camera roll

Im 17 and an aspiring classical pianist for the last 10 years and LOVE LOVE LOVE music. I schedule out every minute of the day in my notes app (yes I was diagnosed with OCD) so i can fit in a 10 mile bike ride, music production, school, piano practice, and a workout.

I practically run on caffeine and maybe average 4 hours of sleep because lowk I stay up late contemplating life 24/7 or planning out my future. Im also the type to rehearse conversations before I have them so I can be ready for anything unexpected.

Im home most of the time (lowk i don’t like leaving my house) and am super picky about my friends because while I have a decent number of acquaintances I have like 3 solid friends. If you argue with me im the type to be purely logical and extremely unbiased and explain things fact by fact but yes I can struggle with the emotional parts of arguments or debates but im working on it.

LASTLY sometimes i love doing spontaneous things out of nowhere. Today I decided I would leave and walk 8 miles at 10pm because sometimes I need substance in my life. It helps that (according to my therapist) i dissociate a lot and kind of go off into my own intricate world. Anyways no idea what i am but am curious to hear yalls ideas.

Should I upgrade from GarageBand to LogicPro?

For some background, I have been a pianist my whole life and now I have recently gotten into music production in GarageBand for the past few weeks, a musical background has definitely helped me get straight into composing and experimenting. I feel myself being limited by basic level compressors and midi editing, and almost no room to edit vocals beyond a basic pitch correction nob EQ settings and reverb. I would just get plugins but by the time I spend money on those I would have practically payed the same amount as Logic. I also feel like I should learn complex mixing early on but al unable to. The only thing I may he scared of is getting bored of production and deciding to quit down the line but I doubt that will happen. Does it seem like a good time to upgrade?

Jeux d’eau

Been playing this for about a month now and I am going to perform it for my high school Junior graduation. Absolutely in love with the textures ravel uses. Im still working on balancing out his percussive “attacks” with melodic lines and dense sounds. But this is a part of my progress so far!

Talent Was Replaced With Marketability

Cancel me, hunt me down whatever somebody needs to say it: you don't need real skill or “talent” to be a pop star anymore. I feel like we used to have performers like Beyonce, Ariana Grande, ect. who were incredible vocal powerhouses (not saying there aren't any good singers today like Billie Eilish or SZA), but it seems like a majority of artist in our generation can barely sing live, don’t know how to dance, don’t produce really any of their music, but they are just pretty or conventionally attractive. It seems like in an age that prioritizes image and marketability we have lost the need for real talent. I think this is sad because so many people work so hard on their craft to be the best just to be outshined by someone who is mediocre but prettier.

I am 17M and have played piano my whole life and it has been my main instrument forever, im also quite good at working in DAWS and production but I am not the best singer. Is this a good window to start developing my vocal skills and seriously practicing or is it too late? I do really want to produce/release my own music. Thanks.

Hello reddit, i am super new to producing and i find myself scrolling for hours trying to find the perfect synth or sound for a track, and then i spend more hours editing it till its just right. How do producers keep track of so many sounds? Any tips?
