How did Wheatly come up with a working plan to stop GlaDOS if he’s the “biggest moron“ by design?
reddit.comPusi/puszi/puss/Bussi
I just saw a thread where people noticed that these words are very similar. They all mean kiss and are from Finnish, Hungarian, Swedish and Austrian German. I tried to look up their etymologies but couldn’t find a lot about their relationships. I did come up with a few theories but none of them are fully convincing and I‘m not a linguist so I thought I’d ask here.
Wiktionary isn‘t really helping with this, except for the fact that buszi is a loan word from Austrian German Bussi (kiss on the cheek). So I think it’s pretty unlikely that the word is of Finno-Ugric origin like you suggested.
In the Etymologisches Wörterbuch des Deutschen (dwds.de, German etymology book) it says that Bussi comes from Indo-European *bu- (lip, kiss). I also tried to look up pusi in a Finnish dictionary but my Finnish is… very rudimentary, so that didn’t work.
So now I have a few theories but none of them fully make sense and I don’t have any proof for them.
A) Finnish borrowed pusi from Swedish puss (which is used the same way as pusi) and Hungarian borrowed puszi from Austrian German Bussi. Puss and Bussi both evolved from IE *bu-. This is the most logically sounding one to me but it still would be rather unlikely for both languages to borrow from the same root and turn it into something so it’s the exact same in both languages. Although the languages are related so perhaps they have similar rules for what words look like which would make this more plausible again.
B) puszi and pusi are of Finno-Ugric origin. That wouldn’t explain why Bussi and puss exist. Swedish has a few loanwords from Finnish so that could in theory be another, but Bussi? Which by the way is only the diminutive, the actual word is Buss. So I think it’s more likely for Hungarian to have borrowed the commonly used diminutive Bussi instead of Austrian borrowing Buss from Hungarian puszi and then turning it into the diminutive Bussi which randomly is very close to the Hungarian again. Also there’s words derived from *bu- all over Europe, including Polish, Albanian and even Middle Irish. So it must be Indo-European.
C) a mix of both: the roots for these words evolved in both Indo-European and in Finno-Ugric separately. This is the theory I‘d conclude from the Wiktionary articles on these words: they say that all these words are onomatopoeias, meaning they’re made to sound like the thing they represent. So there’s a chance both families came up with this word on their own. Perhaps puszi is a loanword from Bussi and puss is a loanword from pusi. This would again be a crazy coincidence but it doesn’t sound too unlikely to me. The root pus (and variations) does *kinda* sound like a kiss and the -i in both origins could very well have evolved separately; -i is very common in Finnish words and -i is common for Austrian diminutives.
Do any of these sound plausible to you? Do you perhaps have more information on this or an idea where I could look?
Warum kein VZ 241?
18TF: Minecraft survival anyone? :3
Hey there, I have a server and want to create a new survival world on it but I don't know anyone I could play with, if someone wants to? :3
Edit: Java of course. Can be any version but preferably 26.2
Also fehlen wahrscheinlich eher 8-10h.
Reporting illegal routes
Maps just proposed a route to me via a road where you’re not allowed to drive on and that doesn’t even get you to the destination because the road is permanently blocked at some point. Is there a way to report such routes or rather the sign telling you not to drive there so that no one else tries to take it (I saw someone drive there, that’s the reason I looked it up)?
I forgot how much I hate having a crush
It’s been a few years since I really liked someone (not a relationship but we had a few dates over the span of a year) and since it ended with us I’ve been craving having a crush. Well, now I do…
So a thing about me is that I get very attached to and lowkey obsessed with people very easily. It’s bad enough with friends/people I wanna be friends with, but when I like someone it’s so much worse.
I’ve dated two girls so far. With both it started pretty similarly. We chatted a lot (both in real life and text) and it was very fun. Then at some point I started really, really missing them whenever we weren’t talking. Like even when it’s only been a few hours. Then jealousy kicked in too, which I’m really not proud of btw. So basically I was just low all the time with a few highs whenever we talked. And that was just so… dreading.
Well, now there’s this girl. I’ve always really liked her but recently we’ve been chatting a lot and I feel like I have a crush on her. A few days ago we hung out without anyone else for the first time (not in a date kind of way) and it was amazing so now I like her even more. But now I feel those feelings come back… and I really don’t want them to. I really want a girlfriend. But I don’t know how I‘m supposed to survive all that.
I was quite young when I dated the other girls and still am only 18 so hopefully this‘ll get better but until then… well…
Edit: there’s also a few other complications this time so I feel like this rollercoaster‘s gonna be painful... I really wish I could either go back to just liking her as a friend or, even better, skip this part and just be in a happy relationship…
Deriving vocabulary from another language
I recently had to write an essay in school for German class (I‘m German) and the topic I came up with was whether (and why!) you could derive Swedish vocabulary just by looking at the German word.
For that I looked at changes the two languages underwent to come up with a set of “rules“ that basically just replace letters of German words with other letters. For example I came up with the rule that German *pf* should be replaced with *p* because of the second sound shift (eg German „**Pf**anne“ is Swedish „**p**anna“). Or that qu in German words should be replaced with kv (Quadrat -> kvadrat, square). And about thirty more rules like this.
To properly test these rules I wrote a program that applies them to a set of 6000+ common words and compares the results with the actual Swedish translations. This way I could show that the rules actually make quite a difference.
Note that I was purely focusing on the written forms (so not pronunciation) and I didn’t include things like conjugation or declension.
My teacher doesn’t know a lot about the topic but thought it was pretty interesting (I also got an A). So afterwards he asked me if I knew anything about existing works like this. I don’t and I don’t even know how I‘d look for this as I’ve never heard of something similar being done. But now I‘m curious too so I thought I‘d ask here. Could you please help me find information on people doing something similar? What even is this?
I don't get the game
I've been wanting to buy this game for a while and finally did so today (Ultra Deluxe version, I don't really know the difference but heard this one was better) and honestly it's been kinda disappointing. It seemed like a perfect game for me as I really enjoy those walk around games like Moral Dilemma: The Interview or Layers of Fear and especially Superliminal, Portal or Fractal Space which also have "real" game mechanics.
All these games either have an interesting story, style, mechanics or "vibe". Most of them multiple of these.
But with Stanley Parable... it's just boring. There's nothing pushing me forward. I don't really feel the story the same way I did with the other games. I don't get this feeling of excitement/fascination I get from other, similar games. There's no sense of progression. I feel like simply knowing how many endings I have found would improve the game greatly, or at least actually *telling me* when I found an ending because then I'd at least have a sense of purpose. I've just been wandering around for an hour and a half, trying to take every possible turn, and I already can't really find any more... I was still able to request a refund so I at least didn't lose any money but it's just so disappointing. I've been looking forward to this for like a year...
Maybe I'm missing something? Why is this game so popular? All the things I heard about it made it seem really fun with a lot of strange but fascinating things going on. Instead I'm just walking through corridors trying to find something fun. By far the best thing about the game is the narrator in my opinion and even that doesn't really catch me.
Fledermauskasten an Bäumen
You don’t need our permission to be yourself
“Is it okay to call myself gay when I‘m actually bi?“
“Is it okay to wear a dress as a trans man?“
“Is it okay to use she/he pronouns as a girl?“
“Is it okay to call myself bi when I‘m actually pan?“
“Is it okay to do HRT when I‘m cis?“
There’s posts like these all the time here. And I honestly think it’s kinda sad. The fact that people feel the need to ask for permission to be themselves.
The whole point of LGBTQ is letting everyone be whoever they wanna be. But apparently society’s pressure to blend in and repress your true self is so large that it even spreads to this sub.
(To prevent misunderstandings, of course it’s okay to make posts like that. I‘m not blaming you for asking those questions here. The problem is that society makes you feel like you need to ask.)
As long as you don’t harm others, do whatever makes you happy.
