HATE, let me tell you how much I’ve come to HATE the general public unawareness of basic linguistic concepts.

I’ve legitimately told so many people that my area is linguistics and most people DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS, “oh so you study literature?” NO YOU TWAT THATS NOT WHAT LINGUISTICS IS

LINGUISTICS IS THE SCIENCE OF LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you know whose fault this is? The school system, I know NOWHERE on earth where the school curriculum even MENTIONS linguistics, it’s an area of science like any other, why do people not even KNOW what it’s ABOUT??? During mandatory school years people go through the superficial contents of SO MANY AREAS, yet, NO LINGUISTICS, people know the basics of biology, mitochondrias and shit, people know the Pythagorean theorem, people know the water cycle, people know newton’s laws, but when the word PHONEME is uttered people look at me like I’m SPEAKING CHINESE.

Semantics, word classes, phonetics, syntax, can we KILL the school system PLEASE.

The ONLY thing people learn in school related to linguistics is grammar, and they dive SO deep into grammar and NOTHING else, for NO reason, it’s already better than nothing but HOLY SHIT. I LOOK CRAZY WHEN I SAY THERE ARE MORE THAN 5 VOWELS, ARE PEOPLE SO DENSE THAT THE CONCEPT OF WRITING≠SPEAKING DOESN’T GET IN THEIR HEADS??? THEY TAKE LINGUISTICS LIKE ITS SOME SORT OF NERDY HOBBY AND NOT AN ACADEMIC AREA THAT CAN BE AS ELABORATE AS ANY OTHER SCIENTIFIC SPECIALITY. PEOPLE WILL EITHER CALL ME CRAZY OR HAVE THE EUREKA OF THEIR LIVES WHEN THEY REALISE S AND Z ARE THE SAME FUCKING SOUND, BUT FOR ONE YOU USE YOUR VOCAL CHORDS AND FOR THE OTHER YOU DONT, A CONCEPT AS BASIC AS CONSONANT VOICING IS COMPLETELY, BEYOND COMPLETELY, IT IS UNFATHOMABLY FOREIGN TO 99% OF THE POPULATION. IVE HAD UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS NOT FUCKING BELIEVING ME.

OH RIDDLE ME THIS BATMAN, EVER REALISED THE H IN HUMAN AND THE H IN HAND ARE TWO DIFFERENT BLOODY SOUNDS? THOSE ARE CALLED ALLOPHONES YOU DENSE FUCK, BEYOND SUPERFICIAL CONCEPT IN LINGUISTICS, THIS SHOULD BE AS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AS TECTONIC PLATES OR THE SOLAR SYSTEM, WHY IS THERE SUCH A STRONG BIAS AGAINST LINGUISTICS????

OH THATS SO CUTE THAT YOU STUDY LINGUISTICS, HOW ABOUT YOU STUDY REAL SCIENCE HUH??? IM GONNA TWEAK THE FUCK OUT.

I AM A FUCKING SCIENTIST, IM JUST STUCK IN THIS SHIT AREA, BECAUSE SOMEONE WONT GET OFF OF THEIR FAT FUCKING ASS, AND MAKE LINGUISTICS EVEN A LITTLE BIT MORE TAUGHT IN SCHOOL CURRICULUMS!!!
