Autistic people, how is your memory?

There is often a stereotype that people with autism have an ironclad memory, but I wonder how recognizable that actually is.

I notice that I can sometimes startle people because I remember small details or conversations from years ago, while they have no idea that it ever happened.

How do you experience your somatic memory, episodic memory (memories of personal events), short-term memory, and long-term memory? Are some types of memory particularly strong for you, while others are less so? I am especially curious about your personal experiences and whether you recognize certain patterns in them.

Autisten, hoe is jullie geheugen?

Can meditation cure my loneliness, depression and suicidal thoughts?

I I’m extremely lonely. I don’t have any friends, and I’ve never had a boyfriend I could cuddle with or kiss. I struggle with suicidal thoughts, and I want to find a way to overcome them because life feels incredibly exhausting.

I also think I might be autistic, and everything often feels overwhelming. I’m looking for concrete, practical advice on how I can improve my situation, manage these feelings, and build a life that feels worth living.

Does anyone else struggle to find the right words when speaking?

I was wondering if anyone else here experiences this.

I often stumble over my words. A lot of the time I can't find the right words. Because of that, I struggle to explain things in a clear, coherent way, and I tend to jump from one thought to another.

It sometimes makes me feel really stupid, even though I know I'm not. What's frustrating is that I can express myself much better in writing than I can when speaking. When I write, I have time to think and find the right words. In conversations, that's much harder, and if I'm stressed, speaking becomes even more difficult.

Does anyone else experience this? How does it affect you, and have you found anything that helps?

Alvast bedankt allemaal! 😊

Struggling to find words when speaking can reading help improve this?

I've struggled with this for a long time, but I've always found speaking difficult. I often have trouble finding the right words and forming clear sentences. My thoughts become disorganized and I start hesitating or stumbling.

Sometimes I get stuck in the middle of a sentence because I can't think of a word, even though I know what I mean. I may pause for a long time, repeat myself, use very simple words, or try to explain the word instead. I also struggle with structuring my thoughts while speaking, which can make my answers feel messy or incomplete.

This has made me quite insecure about speaking. I feel like I don't express myself as well as I could, and my spoken vocabulary feels much more limited than my written vocabulary. Writing is easier because I have time to organize my thoughts, while speaking feels much harder because everything has to happen immediately.

As a medical student, I really want to improve this. During patient interactions, I sometimes struggle to explain things smoothly and clearly, even when I understand the topic well. I want to communicate in a way that makes patients feel informed and reassured, but my difficulty finding words sometimes gets in the way.

I've seen many people mention that reading books can improve vocabulary, communication skills, and the ability to express thoughts more clearly. Do you think reading regularly can actually help with this? If so, what genres or types of books would you recommend? Are there specific books that helped you become better at speaking or expressing yourself?

Struggling to find words when speaking can reading help improve this?

I am 21 years old, male, I don’t smoke, and I don’t use any medications.

I've struggled with this for a long time, but I've always found speaking difficult. I often have trouble finding the right words and forming clear sentences. My thoughts become disorganized and I start hesitating or stumbling.

Struggling to find the right words when speaking

I'm an adolescent, and I've noticed that my verbal communication skills aren't particularly strong. This shows up in several ways:

- In the middle of a sentence, I sometimes experience a kind of brain fog and suddenly can't think of the word I wanted to use. Occasionally, it takes me up to 30 seconds to find the right word or even an alternative while the other person is waiting for me.

- I often catch myself repeating the same words and phrases.

- I find it difficult to turn my thoughts and ideas into clear, coherent sentences.

- I struggle to keep conversations going because I often don't know how to respond in a genuine or meaningful way, especially when the topic is something I'm not very familiar with.

- My vocabulary while speaking is usually quite basic. I'd like to use a richer and more varied vocabulary. Interestingly, I have much less trouble expressing myself in writing, although it takes me considerably longer to organize my thoughts.

I notice these difficulties during patient interactions. I sometimes find it challenging to explain things in a clear and structured way, and I often feel that I'm not communicating as effectively as I would like. It's frustrating because I want my patients to understand me and feel reassured.

I've read several Reddit posts claiming that reading is one of the best ways to improve communication skills. Do you think that is true?

Are there any other tips or exercises that could help me improve my verbal communication skills?

Hoeveel tijd zit er meestal tussen de tussentijdsetoets en praktijkexamen?

Ik ben benieuwd of er mensen zijn die dit weten. Ik heb binnenkort mijn tussentijdse toets en vroeg me af hoe lang het gemiddeld duurt voordat je praktijkexamen kunt doen.

Rijlessen maken me ziek

Ik ben al een tijd aan het lessen (60 uur) over aantal maanden examen, maar elke dag dat ik les heb, voelt mijn hele lichaam heel intens en gespannen. Ik rijd best prima, maar ik voel me gewoon elke dag dat ik in de auto moet stappen een beetje ziek. Wat hebben jullie gedaan om dit te verhelpen? Ik wil namelijk echt snel mijn rijbewijs, want dit is een best duur grapje en niet fijn voor mezelf.

Will doctors become obsolete because of AI?

Hello everyone,

I am currently a medical student, and overall I enjoy my studies. However, I have recently started to question whether I made the right career choice. When I look toward the future, I do not see a particularly optimistic picture.

My main concern is the impact that artificial intelligence (AI) may have on the medical profession. I wonder whether AI will eventually take over a significant portion of physicians' work, just as it is expected to do in many other fields. Personally, I find specialties such as pathology and radiology particularly interesting, but I sometimes question whether there will still be sufficient job opportunities in these areas a few decades from now.

There are several well-known figures who have expressed similar concerns. Elon Musk has warned that AI could be “fundamentally dangerous” for many industries and jobs. Bill Gates has predicted that AI will have a major impact on the work of professionals, including physicians. Technology experts such as Kai-Fu Lee have also argued that many routine tasks in healthcare are likely to be automated by AI.

I am curious to hear how others view the future of AI. What changes do you expect, and how do you think they will affect the role of physicians?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Being gay and having feelings for my religious friend

I like a guy who is very religious and studies at the same university as I do. He is reformed and takes his faith very seriously. We are friends, and I have feelings for him, but I'm not sure what to do. I also don't know whether he is attracted to men, and that's making things difficult because I am a man myself. What should I do?
