Looking for quiet, wholesome, but still interesting things to do while in Germany

All my favorite moments on vacations have been centered around these wholesome, community driven, quiet, but still interesting and fun events. Like signing up for a board game club for one day, poetry open mic at a cafe, going to a random student’s art show, an original play in the park, a museum all about buttons, and getting invited to join a family’s picnic, journaling at a rooftop bar with live music and skyline views.

I have a full weekend to go anywhere in Germany plus 10 work days after 6pm in Lubeck to have some fun.

I’m looking for candid moments I guess, nothing too flashy or touristy, but still get a good experience of Germany.

It will be my first time ever out of the States, oh and I sadly don’t speak German. Yet.

I’ll be there staring next week!

(Tourism tag but I don’t necessarily want touristy things. I’m open to it tho!)

Are Doc Martens a victim of enshittification?

I know vintage and fairly recent Doc Martens hold true to their reputation of high quality, long lasting, make. But with all sorts of other companies cutting costs and corners, I’m worried about investing in a brand new pair in case Doc has as well. Has the quality in the last 6 years or so been noticeably less?

(I am considering buying an older pair, obviously, but if I can buy new to get its full lifetime out of my purchase, that would be preferable)

Go to indoor+outdoor+office footwear in the winter?

I’m going on a work trip in November and then again in February and I’m told it’s hella rainy then. What are some of your favorite shoes to wear that withstand water but are nice looking enough for the office? Preferably I could wear these outside the office to go sight seeing since I don’t have a lot of room to pack a second pair.

Looking for Mary Jane’s, oxfords, or similar that I can walk miles in and not hurt

I am going on a business trip to France and Germany and not only will I be doing a lot of walking in the office, but I will be doing a lot of sight seeing after business hours. I want some nice looking shoes that have arch support, are properly cushioned, and can withstand a lot of use.

What do you recommend?

What to write in my MOH speech when I don’t like my sisters fiancee much

A lot of the letters I’m seeing on here spend half the time talking about how excited they are for their sister and how happy they have seen the significant other make their sister but to be honest with you I haven’t really seen that from my sister. I mean to be fair. She really isn’t that much of an expressive person and he’s a totally fine dude but she just very clearly went with the first good guy and called it a day. Anyway I don’t know what to say because I don’t want to lie. It’s weird because I’m not happy for her. I’m a little worried. I think things will be fine but I guess I’m just a little sad that she won’t have the type of love I do with my husband. I know this is something that she wants and then she’s always looked forward to motherhood, and so that this is the last barrier to becoming a mom, which is something that she’s always wanted and something that I am excited for her to eventually have. I’m excited for her to go into adulthood. (She’s 22 and they are high school sweethearts.) so what do I even say?

Help me make an old school corded phone play music when you pick it up

I really really really badly want to install one of those pretty vintage corded phones and have it actually do something! How silly would it be if every time you picked it up it would just play a song? I know there’s all these tutorials for how to turn one of those old ones into a Bluetooth speaker or connect to your cell and all of that but that’s not what I want. I just want it to be a little gag.

I’ve never done anything like this before. I think it would be relatively easy?. Are there any YouTube videos that either have done this exact thing before or I could apply those concepts to this idea?

Give me ideas for vintage, quirky, and highly functional details to add back into new homes?

I’m looking for things I can easily add back into the home! I was inspired by this frozen in time house museum that had engraved door hinges, push-button light switches (with the satisfying click and a light to tell you if the basement light was on), and built-in drying racks directly above the kitchen sink to name just a few.

Colorless lipstick to make me feel fancy

I don’t really wear tinted lipstick because it migrates all over my thin lips and looks bad but am jelly of all the pretty girls pulling out fancy lipsticks. Is there a chapstick that comes in a typical lipstick tube that y’all know of? I was really only able to find the ph ones which I don’t want.

Best General Tso?

I just moved here and I’m homesick for General Tso (I miss you so much Mandarin Spice) but the three different places near me I tried were just awful (Northern Kitchen, Hunan, and somewhere else I don’t remember). Yeah I’m on the Bloomington side but I’m willing to drive or order from anywhere in Minneapolis.

Favorite restaurants?

Just moved here and I need to start building a new list of go-to bites. What are your favorite restaurants and favorite things to order from their menu?

Give me all around the city, I don’t mind driving.

Excel Chart shows phantom weekends BUT formatting axis as text does something weird?

Obviously I want my chart to just show the work days. Google and YouTube both say that changing the axis format to text should work but it doesn’t and I would like to figure out why because that method is ideal for my reporting template set up. (Yes I know there are options for changing the format on my source table but I would really really like to avoid doing that). So what is happening for the text format to make the chart look so weird?

Picture 1: chart with date format

Picture 2: chart with text format

Picture 3: source table (yes it needs to look like that, i intentionally designed it like that for reasons)

Non Paranormal Horror Recommendations

I have PTSD from my parents dying when I was little when I happened to be really into ghosts and spooky stuff and even though that was almost 20 years ago now, I still get occasional night terrors about my dead parents haunting me. Anyway i’m trying to get back into the horror genre because I think I’m ready and also all other genres just sound so boring right now, but I’m drawing the line at horror with ghosts and paranormal activity. So, Do you have any light-medium horror stuff? Also weirdly it doesn’t bother me if the main character is an orphan or loses their parent in the story, I think that is just such a common trope that I’m desensitized to it now.

I remember liking some of Edgar Allen Poe’s stuff and the Yellow Wallpaper, I think that’s the most I’ve ever done for horror. Oh I LOVED The Menu (movie) and this indie horror game Scanner Sombre (up until the very end though). For ideas.

Option 1 or 2?

I made some changes based on your feedback and my husbands recommendations. Thoughts?

u/No_Crow_2265 — 2 months ago

Bittersweet, me-against-shitty-circumstances books about growing up. Like A Tree Grows In Brooklyn or Demon Copperhead. Bonus points if it centers around being an orphan or an outcast at school.

There’s some sort of feeling, something healing or something about being seen, to read a story where the main character is going through something you know very personally. Those two books have rattled me so much and I just want to be rattled again. Give me your best and PLEASE tell me why you think it fits or what you liked most about it.

Does this design look put together?

This is what I am wanting to do for my living room and it was a huge struggle to translate my Pinterest board into an actual plan for my living room, even more so of a struggle to find items in my budget or that I can DIY (the couch and cat end table total $35,000 lol). I’ve been staring at this so long I can’t tell anymore if it looks good 😭😭😭

If I boil or microwave edamame will it still be crunchy?

I don’t want to turn it into mushy cooked peas. I like the crunch. Like sugarpeas.

Why does the sum function not work on a table pasted as values only?

So I have to copy and paste this stupid table from a website that puts both a Metric and Metric As A Percentage in the same cell (“5 (31.25%)”). I want to split those two numbers into different columns so I can do shit with it (“5”) and (“31.25%”).

My first attempt was using the left function to return the first two characters. Then I copy that table and paste as values so that I can sum the columns but I keep getting 0 returned when I sum. Why?

I’ll see if it lets me put a picture in the comments.

What can I substitute for Ketchup in this recipe for pulled chicken sandwiches?

I hate the smell and taste of ketchup. I’m fine with other tomato sauces for some reason but I can’t do ketchup. What can I substitute it for?

SWEET AND TANGY PULLED CHICKEN SANDWICHES

Serves 4
Cooking Time: 2 to 3 hours on low

Ingredients

1 onion, chopped fine

1/4 cup tomato paste

1 tablespoon chili powder

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon paprika

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/4 cup ketchup

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons molasses

2 (12-ounce) bone-in split chicken breasts, skin removed, trimmed

Salt and pepper

4 hamburger buns

Instructions

Combine onion, tomato paste, chili powder, 1 tablespoon oil, paprika, and cayenne in bowl and microwave, stirring occasionally, until onion is softened, about 5 minutes; transfer to 5 1/2- to 7-quart slow cooker.

Stir in ketchup and molasses. Season chicken with salt and pepper, nestle into slow cooker, and turn to coat with sauce. Cover and cook until chicken registers 160 degrees, 2 to 3 hours on low.

Transfer chicken to cutting board and let cool slightly. Using 2 forks, shred into bite-size pieces; discard bones. Stir mustard and 2 tablespoons vinegar into sauce left in slow cooker. (Adjust sauce consistency with hot water as needed.) Stir in shredded chicken and season with salt and pepper to taste. Portion chicken onto buns, top with coleslaw, and serve.
