Chaos Champion

I remember being really inspired by this miniature as a youngster reading the 6th edition Hordes of Chaos book, so I'm feeling very happy to finally have one painted up for my collection (plus I'm a sucker for a metal miniature). The backdrop uses the new horror book by Handiwork Games, which I think gives the vibe of this warrior striding out of the Chaos Wastes.

My Rat-Kin Reavers

I've been having fun using some of the backdrop books by Handiwork Games and wanted to share the results. Featured are some of my Rat-Kin Reaver minis and Jewish Revolt against Rome rebel figures which you.van find on my website (sculpted by Alan Marsh and painted by me).

I've been busy painting up more of the Rat-Kin for the second round of our club's Mordheim campaign that we're going to be kicking off again in September. I'm hoping my rats will last long enough to actually receive reinforcements 😆

New fleet inbound

It's been about 16 years since I last played BFG, and for some reason I kept getting a serious urge to start playing again (it is an amazing game after all). So I found some ships courtesy of Scourge Scenics and got painting. The first of them are here. I also have an Imperial fleet on the way, plus reinforcements for both.

I'm also going to be doing a demo game for some interested people down at the Clubhouse in Newcastle upon Tyne in a couple of weeks in an effort to recruit some new admirals.

Last Mordheim game of the campaign

Tonight was the final Mordheim night of our campaign that has been running since September '25 at the Clubhouse in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was great fun, we played the bar room brawl scenario which was v. fitting! I took out the bar keeper, probably because my gang had built up a bit of a hefty bar tab...!

The group is now taking a hiatus on Mordheim for a few months to play some other games, including Gorkamorka and The Doomed. Not because we don't love Mordheim, we just need a palette cleanser before heading back to the city of the damned.

In other exciting news, one of the group was using their newly purchased Rat-Kin Reavers! It's so cool seeing my minis on the table being played by someone 😃 They're not painted yet, but that's just fine, still very nice to see them and I'm really happy they liked them.

John Blanch tribute

I've just finished my squad entry for "Geordie Daemon", a local painting comp happening next weekend at The Clubhouse in Newcastle upon Tyne. This is a squad I'll be using for the game "The Doomed", converted from Guards of Traitors Toll minis with Anvil Industries bits.

This is also the John Blanche tribute piece I decided I wanted to do, and I'm really happy with how they turned out. For the backdrop I used the box art from volume 1 of the Blanche paint set - as an aside every model pictured uses at least three paints from that set, and I used all the colours from the set at least once on the squad.

28mm Spanish buildings from Empires at War

I'm currently having a bit of a Sharpe renaissance as I've decided to re-read all the novels. So naturally I've been inspired to resume work building some Spanish houses for my Napoleonic games!

Blanchitsu challenge

Following the sad passing of John Blanche, a group of my friends and I were promoted to paint something in his honour. So I decided to paint a warband for The Doomed in vaguely Blanchitsu style. My self-appointed challenge is to use at least three colours from this paint set on each mini, while also trying to incorporate all the paints at least once across the warband. Pictured is my first mini of the gang, finished aside from an oil wash which I will apply once all the minis are ready for it.

The miniature is from the Guards box set from the Guards of Traitors Toll game, with some kitbashing using Anvil Industries bits.

Rat-Kin Reavers - the Chieftain

The Chieftain, leader of the Rat-Kin, is one of my favourite designs. I really wanted the warband leader to be something a bit special, someone who would stand out amidst a sea of filthy rats. This mini has the usual chain mail armour as befits a war leader, an implausibly large sword, as well as some fantastic bone shoulder pads - they're not just armour, they're very fashionable too!

In total I have produced 15 metal minis for this warband (sculpted by Alan Marsh and painted by me).

Rat-Kin photo shoot

This is my "Tide Caller", one of my new Rat-Kin Reavers sculpted by Alan Marsh. Because I like terrible puns I designed it with a spine whip which he can use to put some backbone into his underlings...

If you want to find out more please check out https://www.northwingminiatures.com/

The Rat-Kin are meant to be viking themed, as a kid I was a fan of the Brian Jacques Redwall series, and I always imagined the rats of the first novel to look something like this. I also wanted something a bit different from the GW skaven. Enjoy!

Rat-Kin Reavers: The Tide Caller

Just wanted to show you a recent model I've painted for my viking themed Rat-Kin Reavers warband, the Tide Caller. He's the warband's second in command, hence the spine whip to put backbone into his underlings.

This is a 28mm miniature I designed, sculpted by Alan Marsh, then painted by me (mostly using dry brushing).

Some more of the Gnawing tide

Here are a couple more of my Rat-Kin Reavers, the Bone Seer (sorcerer) and a Beserker rat, because who doesn't love a rat with a big axe in a loin cloth?! You can find out more about them here: https://www.northwingminiatures.com/

Somebody mentioned pillaging

I just wanted to show off some of my new minis, the Rat-Kin Reavers. I designed these with a viking aesthetic, although it wasn't until I posted a picture of these on Bluesky that someone suggested I could use them for Pillage. So thought I'd share them here as I thought that was a fun idea.

There are 15 metal minis in this warband (sculpted by Alan Marsh and painted by me), which includes various characters and rank and file, all Viking themed. Enjoy!

Terrain plinths for photography

I am a fan of mini photography, so I like making terrain plinths to stage photos on. This is one I recently finished. The idea is that it is large enough (slightly bigger than A4) to use for different scenes and from multiple angles, making it quite versatile. Typically I use backdrops from Handiwork Games, although you could just as easily use something else, or nothing at all if you have a nice landscape behind (or sky).

Newly sculpted Rats by Alan Marsh

Not my work, but I designed a range of 28mm rats for Alan Marsh to sculpt for me. The pictured models were painted by me.

My design approach is as follows:

  1. I write a narrative brief explaining the vibe - this is probably the most important element as this is what really drives the "character" side of sculpting (it's art not science).

  2. I provide a short list of essential requirements (ie, sculpts must be one piece, size expectations and so.on). To support this I provided Alan was a model from a different range of figures that I wanted him to scale them against.

  3. I provide a written breakdown of each model, describing key features and providing sketches of critical elements, such as shields, weapons, and, in this case, an example of a full figure - my drawing skills aren't great so this was more to explain the overall concepts.

I thought this might help people interested in getting things sculpted who aren't sculptors themselves. Please reach out if you have any questions about this.

Rat-Kin Reavers design thoughts

When designing my new Rat-Kin Reavers miniatures I wanted them to have a really ragged look, wearing rotten clothing and using battered weapons and armour looted from the battlefield. The idea is that they're Viking themed, but with a grimdark twist.

All of the 15 minis in the range have been sculpted with small details to give them character, such as barnacles clinging to their tunics, broken and damaged shields, bone daggers or even bone armour.

If you'd like to find out more on my design thoughts please see my blog posts on the subject of design:

RIP John Blanche

Incredibly sad news about the passing of John Blanche. I never had the pleasure to meet him myself, but his loss is gutting. His work was inspirational to so many of us, and he leaves behind a truly monumental legacy that will undoubtedly resonate for many years to come. He will be sorely missed.

Another one of the Rat-Kin Reavers, the Tide Caller (note the spine whip) & Beserker

Here are a couple more pictjres of my new range of Rat-Kin (sculpted by Alan Marsh, painted by me). In Mordheim I think these could be useful as hero models, depending on which list you're using. I particularly like the so-called Tide Caller with his spine whip (to put backbone into the warband 😉)
