Cop texting and driving

North on Neyagawa and Upper Middle. Aug 19 @ 645pm. Cop clearly texting and driving (car # 6646), swerving between lane markers. Another cop car pulled up behind the first car, seemed like it was just providing cover and creating distance with other cars.

What’s the play in this situation? Honk? Video evidence and file a complaint?

Avion points for Japan vacation

We have 300k Avion points. I’m looking at tickets from Toronto to Tokyo (return Osaka to Toronto) - 3 adults. July 2027. I’m using the fixed price grid and finding Air Canada return tickets for 100k points + $1100 in fees/taxes.

When I check the AC website*, same flight is $922 base fare + $1100 in fees/taxes. So that’s a redemption rate of 100k Avion points for $922 in air fare. Pretty abysmal.
* far more flight options on the AC website that aren’t showing on the Avion travel page

What am I doing wrong/missing? Is there a way to get more from my Avion points? Should I just pay cash for the airfare and save the points for hotels? Although I’m not sure the redemption rate will be any better.

ps More and more I am realizing the Avion redemption rates even on their fixed grid is not a lot of value. I can probably do better on a 2% cash back card. :(

Charity and gift expenses

Do these expenses affect tax calculation? I have some donations that are not eligible for tax deductions in which case I’ll enter these as misc expenses.

HCSI / Crown Capital / Simply Green water heater rental is criminal

Took possession of our home in Oakville from the builder Jan 2021. Water heater rental contract with HCSI Comfort @ $45/mo. 15 year term. 3.5% annual increase. After nearly 6 years, we are paying $65/mo for the water heater. We had no choice to remove the rental from the builder contract.

Called Crown Capital / Simply Green who bought over HCSI contracts. Buyout is…wait for it…$7500!!! They calculate as monthly payment x # remaining months on contract. No adjustment for depreciation. I can buy a brand new top of the line unit for $2k taxes in installed.

I wouldn’t even call this a scam. It’s criminal and requires provincial regulation and oversight. I asked about the class action settlement and the rep said it covers HVAC equipment but conveniently not water heaters. And the settlement only reduced buyout by 25% which is a joke.

Just had to vent.

How do you walk a partner through your completed plan

I finally feel like I have a reasonably sound plan built with strategies in play. I’ve been working on it independently and want to walk my partner through the plan.

I’m curious how others have caught their partner up on their plan. Do you walk through all the assumptions - snooze fest! - building up to the net worth and success rate projections? Or start the other way around explaining the charts.

How to refresh plan with actual on an ongoing basis

Once I have created a base scenario, how would I go about reflecting changes in investment values, income etc. over time?

For instance if my investments had a great 2026 or conversely there is a forecasted reduction in income, do I update / overwrite the starting balance for these accounts and project out again with 2027 as year 1? Or is there a way to freeze what I have entered right now as the baseline and track changes +/- over time?

Entering DB pension benefit amounts that vary based on age of retirement

My DB pension statement says the following:

Projected to Retirement at Age 65 = $107,250 per year
Projected to Retirement at Age 55 = $52,846 per year until age 65 and $48,660 thereafter.

From my employer's portal, I can also see that:

Retirement at Age 60 has a payout of $85,548 till Age 65, and then $78,588 from Age 65 onwards.

The Tax & Benefits section provides a far simpler input field for Annual Benefit Pre and Post 65. How do I reflect the above options in my plan, e.g. DB payout values pertaining to the Age 60 retirement option?

Understanding Expense Snapshots and Debts section

We currently have a primary home mortgage with payments continuing well intro retirement and a rental property (both jointly owned by my partner and I). The mortgage balance, rate and payment details have been added to the Debt section.

https://public.adviice.com/dashboard/48h-yTSj7E4Geew0

I have created Expense snapshots for pre-retirement / go-go / slow-go and no-go. We intend to sell the rental property at some point during the pre-retirement stage.

  • Is there a straightforward place to see the math behind the net proceeds for the sale of the rental property? I'm interested in seeing the estimated value of the rental property in the year of sale, the remaining mortgage amount, closing costs and the final net income (after tax considering the property is jointly owned and my partner and I have different tax rates).
  • How does the system allocate the proceeds of the sale- from the Summary section, it appears to be splitting across my partner's TFSA (we both have available contribution room) and a couple other accounts.
  • If I mistakenly enter Rental Mortgage payment in one of the Retirement snapshots, is the system smart enough to ignore that given the Rental is already noted to be sold during the Pre-Retirement years?
  • At some point, I started playing around with the Debt Payoff Plan tab. I assumed it was for analysis only, but the inputs seem to affect the Projections and Summary section. Is this correct?

We also intend to downsize our primary home at some point either right before retirement or during the "Go-Go" period. I have specified the relevant sale / purchase dates in the Selling/Buying House sections. I have also entered in an estimated purchase price guessing at an amount that will allow me to buy the property with the equity from the sale of our home.

I am struggling to wrap my head around what to enter into the Mortgage expense field in the Expenses tab across the different snapshots. I have entered the current mortgage payment in the "Current Snapshot" for purposes of the Cash Flow Screen. But do I leave it blank across the remaining snapshots as the system knows the mortgage payment amount from the Debts section?

  • Also the date of the sale of my primary home (and proceeds used to purchase a paid off downsized home) may be part way through one of my Expense snapshots, e.g. 3 years into the "Go-Go" period. If I enter in a mortgage payment in the Expenses section, will it double count the mortgage expense? Or is it ignored and only the Debts section details determine the mortgage payment and how long to reflect the mortgage expense as part of the plan?

Philips Saeco only half the milk coming out of lattego carafe

I have a 4 year old EP3246. For latte or cappuccino drinks, only half the milk in the carafe comes out, resulting in half the volume of drink than we normally get. It seems to be sputtering and not emptying out all the milk.

Something similar happened a year ago (it was worse and seemed to be water/very little milk) and we replaced the carafe ($100!!) and that resolved the issue. Since then we have been careful to only hand wash the carafe. I have submerged it in warm water and used a tooth pick in the air hole, and don’t see any dislodged rubber gasket either. Not sure why it’s losing pressure especially since the carafe is only a year old.

I will order a new carafe and test it to see if it’s indeed a carafe problem or an internal system issue. Anyone have a solution for this? I don’t want to spending $100 on a new carafe every year.

TFSA contribution room & sale of home

We have a large TFSA contribution room available and are ploughing majority of our savings to use the room. I expect we will be able to fill the room in 5 years. We will continue to save the same amount each year, but in a non-reg account.

Given the tool knows what our available contribution room is + new room that opens each year, will it automatically switch to directing the savings to a non-reg account once the TFSA room is used up?

Second, we have a primary home with a mortgage and we intend to sell it at or immediately after retirement and downsize to a home with no mortgage. I believe this is accomplished by completing the "Selling House" section. How do I indicate the proceeds from the sale of the home to be rolled into a new home with no mortgage? Presently, the tool shows the proceeds being directed to a Non-Reg savings account but we want to show it as real estate instead.

How to track mortgage that lasts partly through retirement

My primary home mortgage will not be paid until 5-8 years into retirement. To accurately project the income/spending through retirement, what's the best way to show when mortgage expenses are to end? Is this accomplished by creating a new financial snapshot? So if I plan to retire at 60 and mortgage will continue till age 68, do I create two snapshots from ages 60-68 and 69-90?

How do I handle other life events that overlap with this window? Do I keep creating new snapshots for each variation?

One more question- I also have a DB Pension and I have specified start of retirement at 60 in the "Tax & Benefits" section. I'm assuming the financial snapshots run independently of this and I have to manually create a "Retirement" snapshot to match to show the accurate income? For instance if my snapshot shows Retirement beginning at 65 but the "Tax & Benefits" section has DB Pension starting age 60, in Projections it will show both employment income + Pension payout from ages 60-64 which won't be accurate.

New user questions about all the sections, warning messages and projection summary

I've been entering as much information as I can but can't seem to get it all correct. Hoping someone can help / validate.

INCOME

  • Section labels are confusing. The sections say "Monthly" Gross Income or "Monthly" Payroll Deductions, but each entry field has its own frequency dropdown. So for example, I have entered my biweekly gross employment income with frequency "/BW". I see the Monthly Gross Income reflects this. But if I change the dropdown to "/W", I would expect the Monthly Gross Income to double, but it only goes up about 33%
  • Monthly Payroll Deductions: I get paid biweekly and $800 is saved in an employer provided savings plan (with a % match by my employer). Do I enter the $800 under "Other Deductions"? Where do I show the additional $240 biweekly contribution from my employer into my savings plan?

EXPENSES

  • Warning W191 - Not sure what more information the tool is looking for. I've provided a lot of information already covering all the sections in the FAQ for this warning message. It would be useful if the tool would tell us specifically where it is seeing less detail.

CASH FLOW

  • I'm seeing a large annual "Missing Deductions" of $19K. I've validated my gross income (even changed some data elements to annual based on the last year-end pay stub), frequency, deductions from pay stub and net amounts but cannot figure out where it's off. How critical is it to get this right for purposes of Projections?

INSURANCE

  • Do the premiums entered in this section drive any of the expenses or is this for information purposes only?

FOUNDATION

  • I'm assuming these are tools for analysis but don't have an impact on the projections?

INVESTMENT PLAN

  • How do I override the stock return assumptions? It's locked at 6.56% and I'd like to try different scenarios of 7/8/9%

PROFILE

  • I have a Defined Benefit pension through my employer. I have set a retirement age in my profile of 60. My DB plan provides different payouts at age 65 and a lower amount if I retire after age 55 (with higher pension until age 65, then lower after 65). Does this get automatically reflected in the Projections or do I need to create a new financial snapshot for retirement and plug in the expected income from DB plan?

Data privacy- Upload documents

I'm going through Discovery and the Upload Docs section asks to upload a number of documents.

  1. Is this required for the software to function or optional?

  2. Does adviice use data extraction tools to read the documents? The help section says it is used to validate supplied information so I assume this is the case.

  3. How is this data protected? This is a lot of sensitive info. Do you have a posted data privacy and security policy to review? E.g. how is the data encrypted, where is it stored, who has access to this information, etc. Any tools to easily redact information or have others done this manually?

Speeding ticket

Got my first speeding ticket in 15 years going North on Neyagawa. It's a community safe zone and the officer told me they are extra vigilant. He gave me a ticket for going 75 in a 60 community safety zone. He said I was going over 80 but he reduced it to 75.

The early resolution/meet with prosecutor date is next week. I don't mind paying the fine but hoping to avoid points that will affect my insurance premium. Any chance of getting off with a fine only? Not sure if the prosecutor can see if the officer already gave me a break by reducing it to 15 over.

Why is spousal RRSP contribution greyed out?

I can enter a value for myself n the Expenses savings section, but its greyed out for my partner. I made spousal RRSP contributions for her (my tax deduction, account/withdrawal will be in her name). How do I enter this? It is also greyed out for her in the Assets section so I can't enter her Spousal RRSP balance (which I contributed to for her).

New account question on foundational details required

I am signing up for a new account to give the platform a spin for a month. Can someone explain what foundational info I need to provide? Current income, spend levels by category etc, investment accounts? I have a messy system of bank accounts for different purposes, investment accounts, etc. and just want to make sure I can assemble all the info the system will require so I can move on to scenario analysis etc.

Once an initial plan is setup and I cancel the monthly plan, will I lose all my info or can the platform / my details still be accessed in "read only" mode?

Digital clock with seconds

What are you folks using for a wall clock? Looking for a simple but large (30”+ wide) digital clock with seconds display to time exercises. Phone timer is cumbersome especially when I have gloves on and difficult to see and don’t want to mess with apps and iPad solutions. I do have a smart tv in the room but again wanted an always on clock vs manually launching an app each time.

The rogue timer is nice but way too expensive. Cheapest I’ve found is a generic brand on Amazon but still over CAD $150. https://a.co/d/0bsiM8qf

Let winners run or rotate into XEQT?

I have a large % of my portfolio in XEQT. I contribute biweekly to DCA into XEQT. I also hold a number of individual stocks purchased over the past 10-15 years. These are generally large market cap, high conviction holds and the returns have been impressive - some examples, MSFT, NVDA, GOOG, COST, RY, MA, AMZN, MELI (edit- the specific picks are irrelevant to the post).

Many of the stocks are up hundreds of %, easily beating the broad market. I believe these will still deliver strong returns over the next 15 years (my retirement timeline) but likely not like the last 15.

Do you let your high conviction winners run, or once they are up 3X, 5X, 10X take the win and rotate them into XEQT?

EDIT- to be clear I’m not asking for opinions on the individual stocks. I’m asking if the general consensus is to take the wins and rotate into XEQT or let the winners run if you believe individual stocks will (continue to) beat the market over the long run.

Allow good picks to ride over the long term?

Over the years I’ve been fortunate to have invested in some good companies. As a result, % earnings to date have been strong. I still believe in the investment thesis behind most if not all of these companies even if recent market returns have been unattractive (I’m looking at you Microsoft!).

I often wonder if I should take the earnings and plow them into XEQT or similar or just let the winners run.

Additional context- I have 15-20 years to retirement. I do have a couple other retirement accounts which are more heavily skewed towards XEQT but overall these individual stocks represent around 20% of my overall portfolio + company DB pension plan.
