On this day in 1964, the Beatles set foot on Canadian soil for the first time -- in Winnipeg

It was an unscheduled refuelling stop in Winnipeg en route to San Francisco from London.

The four of them stepped on to the tarmac, signed a few autographs, and John Lennon gave a brief interview to local reporter Bob Burns.

Best part was when Burns asked Lennon about the comfort level on the flight.

Burns: You got to stretch your legs, I suppose?
Lennon: Well, amongst other things, yes. (smiles at the TV camera)

The lads would play several shows in Canada between 1964 and 1966, but they were all in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. They never again returned to Winnipeg as a group.

Any theories why Sonny Barger, probably the most famous Hells Angel ever, ended up not getting a Hells Angels grave in Oakland?

First photo is Sonny Barger's grave marker in a Sacramento, California, cemetery. The second photo is the Hells Angels' section of a cemetery in Oakland, where he said he wanted to be buried. Apparently, he relocated back to Oakland from Arizona a couple years before he died because he knew he didn't have long to live and he wanted to be buried with his Hells Angels brothers in Oakland.

It seems absolutely bizarre that Barger, whose entire identity was wrapped up in the club, would not get a Hells Angels' grave next to his friends in Oakland and that he wouldn't even have the club's patch on his gravestone.

But there are also lots of theories floating around, one of which is that he was quietly kicked out of the club a year or so before he died. I also believe two of his wives turned out to be police informants, which did not bode well for him.

It also says "Vietnam" on his gravestone, which is weird, because Sonny Barger never served in Vietnam. He only served six months in the US Army in 1956, which was before US involvement in Vietnam.

Anyway, I thought this would make a good discussion.

Let's get this straight: The ONLY correct way to spell "centre" in Canada is "centre"

This might seem pedantic, but I am sick and tired of seeing Canadians spell this word the incorrect American way - "center" - when referring to the middle point or central location.

The word is CENTRE in Canada, in every use. If you spell it "center," you are spelling the word incorrectly.

Let this be the last time this has to be said.

Oakland Hells Angel Terry the Tramp, Monterrey Pop Festival 1967

It has been said that Terry the Tramp (1939-1970) was the prototype for the "biker look" that was copied by others and became so popular in later years. He has even been credited for starting the trend of cutting the fingers off leather gloves. He was definitely way ahead of his time for 1967.

This photo absolutely screams "Miami"

Why is Miami such a breeding ground for people like West and ToKtAm ThOmAs?

Some barefoot guy is standing at the corner of Aylmer and King screaming obscenities for the past hour. Will the police remove him if I call?

And he's drinking a can of Stella as well, so probably drunk. He is absolutely obnoxious.

EDIT: After walking out in front of traffic and getting honked at, he's finally left (after throwing a barrage of insults at the driver) and wandered northbound on Bethune St. He's been around before doing the same thing, and, unfortunately, he'll probably be back. So tired of this crap.

Are people mistaking "crushes" or "love" for limerence here?

I joined this subreddit recently and have noticed a lot of stories and comments here that appear to be from people who are obsessing over others in ways that, to me, sound like crushes or even love. In some instances, people have shared stories about having been intimate with their LO.

This really doesn't sound like limerence to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

I have experienced what I would call "crushes" and I have experienced what i would call "love', but they are very different from what I would describe as "limerence" that I have experienced.

Limerence, to me, is having obsessive thoughts about someone who is, typically, a member of the sex you are attracted to, but you are not attracted to them in a sexual way. The attraction is more about them as a whole, and the "fantasies" are not being in intimate situations with them, they are instead fantasies about spending time with that person, going for a drink with them, having conversations with them, etc. -- which is what makes limerence so confusing.

What do you think is the Cajun food equivalent of "No true Scotsman puts sugar on his porridge"?

I am thinking it might be "No true Cajun puts tomatoes in their gumbo", but there are probably other.

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Do you think Lester Bangs was a good rock-music critic?

He was certainly a good writer who was colourful, but it seems like there were few bands Lester actually liked, LOL.

He did like garage-rock and, of course, The Guess Who, but he hated prog-rock and most of the music of his era.

He constantly lamented that "there's nothing going on" anymore.

He was definitely a character and a piece of classic rock history, though.

What's your favourite bullshit story that this pantload told?

There's so many ....

Richard Kuklinski claimed to have whacked Jimmy Hoffa, Carmine Galante, Paul Castellano and Roy DeMeo.

Take your pick; there are these and so much more.

Is it normal for company payroll/AP depts to treat long-term contractors like complete strangers (or security risks)?

So, I've been in business for myself for a couple of years doing contract work. I have really good relationships with the Executive Suites of my two largest clients, both of which are medium-sized companies employing around 500-1,000 people.

However, the payroll departments don't seem to know who I am and I struggle to get invoices paid on time. If I call them or email them, when a payment is late they are quick to respond, but they always seem to try to want to verify I am who I say I am. It's bizarre - I even got one of the client's CEO to personally vouch for me on one occasion, yet the payroll people seem to continue to be suspicious of me.

I'm not really that familiar with how larger companies operate; is there some sort of large-scale disconnect between payroll/accounts payable departments and the operational end of companies?

I am curious to know if anyone else deals with this or if anyone from the finance side can explain the logic here.

Thanks!

Is there a single scene that cemented you as a Big Lebowski fan?

Mine is the "I've had a long night and I hate the fuckin' eagles!" scene.

Janis Joplin in Winnipeg, 30th June 1970

Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and some other acts stopped in Winnipeg as part of the Festival Express Tour that summer.

The story goes that Janis left her hotel, flagged down a taxi, and told the driver, "Take me to where all the freaks are," and this is where she was dropped off.
