Spikes 1500- 5000

I am currently racing in the Nike Rival Distance, and I honestly like them. However, most of my competition is wearing carbon plated spikes, and I don't want to be giving away free seconds because of my footwear.

I own the ASICS Hyper MD 8, so I assume I'm covered for the 800m.

My main focus, though, is the 1500m to 3000m.

A bit about me:

Female

EU size 42

Somewhat of a heel striker, at least at longer distances.

My current goals are to break:

18:00 for 5,000m

10:20 for 3,000m

4:50 for 1,500m

(Currently ~18.30/10.30/4.52)

I sometimes compete at regional championships and smaller international meets, so any spike would need to be approved by World Athletics:

Thank you!

Best advices from your coach

My coach once told me my running form needs some work. In order to get faster I should take more and longer strides. This is in itself very true.

He also gives me great compliments:

"Just as I thought you should just switch to table football, you run a good race for once."

A similar compliment he gave a friend of mine:

"Your skips are fantastic. Now you just need to become as good at running as in skips"

Honorable mention: when new runners come to our club, he likes to tell them that I also used to be "as slow" as they are now. Which motivates everyone obviously.

I think we all would profit immensely from the shared wisdom of all of our coaches.

Please share your stories so we can all profit!

My coach also said to get better at running you need to run and not cycle so obviously he is very likeable.

Warum machen so wenig Frauen Leistungssport?

Ich verstehe natürlich jeden, der Laufen einfach nur für sich macht. Aber die Leistungsdichte bei Frauen und Männern im Vereinssport ist schon enorm unterschiedlich. ;

Garmin VO2max vs weight

Has anyone ever actually tried, if garmin vo2 max reacts to weight changes? As in set a wrong number etc?

For all I have ever seen: two people with the same 5k time will have the same garmin vo2max, unless one of them has set their max HR wrong.

Obviously IRL weight gain will affect pace.

I am pretty convinced that garmin is max HR vs HR at different paces. Age, gender seems to only matter for the top x% calculations.

My bf for example is 30kg heavier than me and his garmin vo2max is the same as my vo2 max used to be when I ran his paces.

Right now my garmin vo2max is 58 (,25); my 5k is ~18.30 (prediction is 18.13) and my weight is 58kg. I am a woman.

Average Genetic limit 5km?

After seeing this question asked in r/sprinting for the 100 and 200m, I was wondering the same for the 5000m.

What do people here think the average genetic limit is for the 5k? Genetic limit as in- good training and starting out young.

Please answer for both men and women.

I would guess ~16.30 for women and 15.00 for men?

Edit: some people seem to have issues with what I mean by genetic limit. Let's put it that way: Someones whole life purpose would be the 5000m, we have every expert in every profession needed at our hands. We start out at the perfect age.

I am a total beginner is this right?

I tried the classic jumping with two feet and alternate jumping and i cant do it but this (the video) seems to be a lot easier? Is it a valid technique for exercise?

How many women here struggle with irregular periods?

Curious how often people here miss their periods (not including perimenopause/menopause).

I know a few friends who struggle with this. Personally, I’ve never missed one, although I would describe my training as intense. (70-100km/weeks)

Additional context is welcome, if you want to share! (Fueling, mileage, how you overcame this issue etc)

Update on my iron/ bragging about my PB

Still can't believe I just ran 18.45 on the 5k.

The start of the year was horrible. After going under 20 min the first time in december (19.58 and 19.39), my fitness started declining.

Figured out I was iron deficient and went from supplementing 20mg a day to 100mg a day, which helped almost immediately. I was hardly able to run a 5k in 22min before I finally upped my dosage, felt incredible after only 2 weeks. Interestingly enough my garmin vo2max showed this nicely. (I know it's a meaningless number overall but it can indicate problems).

New records:

2000m track: 7.01

5k: 18.45 (wavy parkrun course)
