I read SmartTVs universally have bad app performance so Plex suffers unless you get a stand alone device like a ROKU stick or AppleTV.

Both exist on different ends of the price spectrum and I wonder myself if getting a budget one like ONN or ROKU branded one is good enough rather than spending $200 for an ATV. My tv is about 8-10 years old now and the boot up to Plex is so painfully slow.

Of the things omitted from this tier, I am most concerned about the lack of transcoding. I watch a mix of modern shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supernatural, X-Files but also a lot of older shows like Golden Girls, Wings, Cheers, etc. which I always grab at 4K or 1080P but while streaming, I'll mostly kick it down to 480P to save on data usage; will this adversely affect my ability to stream remotely?
