Just bought a refurbished ThinkPad X280 and I'm trying to install Linux Mint

I made a bootable USB and it shows up fine in Windows, but when I press F12 to open the boot menu, the USB entry says "Device Guard (Unselectable)", so I can't boot from it at all.

The laptop also has a Supervisor password set by a previous owner. The refurbisher doesn't know the password either because they bought it from someone else.

Has anyone come across this before?

  • Is "Device Guard (Unselectable)" caused by the Supervisor password?
  • Is there any legitimate way to boot Linux Mint without knowing the Supervisor password?

Any advice would be appreciated.

RTX 2080 Ti running at 97% usage, 81°C, 1905MHz, 4084 RPM – normal?

I'm like 90% sure this is completely normal, but I just want a sanity check.

My RTX 2080 Ti is under full load while gaming and it's sitting at:

  • GPU Usage: 97%
  • Temperature: 81°C
  • Core Clock: 1905MHz
  • Fan Speed: 4084 RPM
  • Wattage: 370w

The card seems stable, no crashes or artifacts, and performance is what I'd expect.

Is this pretty normal for a 2080 Ti under a heavy load?

Thanks!

What’s the best way to grow your channel.

I initially thought shorts were a good idea but now my analytics are all messed up. YouTube claims I have 12k monthly viewers when only 26% of my views actually come from my long-form content.

Don’t get me wrong I enjoy posting shorts but I believe shorts analytics should be separate from long-form.

This eye sore is a ultra budget pc I built a year or so ago

A few people asked about this build when I first posted it, but I completely forgot to do a proper breakdown, so here it is.

One thing worth pointing out: the GPU isn’t RGB from the factory. I actually did a custom RGB mod on it, which you can see here:

If you’re interested in the full specs and a complete breakdown of the system:

And here’s some gameplay footage showing how it performs:
https://youtu.be/OPQ6gRo9i3k?si=A1E4eCP0DGTQjltZ

It may not win any beauty contests, but for a budget build it’s been a surprisingly capable little machine. The RGB GPU mod was probably the most interesting part of the project and helped give it a bit more personality.

Happy to answer any questions about the build, the mod, or why I thought this colour scheme was a good idea at the time.
